The Minnesota Timberwolves and Kurt Rambis have reached terms on a deal that will install Rambis as the Wolves’ new head coach, according to NBA coaching sources.

Sources told ESPN.com that the Wolves are planning a Tuesday news conference to introduce Rambis as the replacement to Kevin McHale, whom Rambis famously tangled with in the 1984 NBA Finals.

Long considered a potential heir apparent to Los Angeles Lakers coach Phil Jackson, Rambis has been lured away from Jackson’s staff by a four-year deal believed to be worth in excess of $8 million

After turning down the Sacramento Kings’ job during the NBA Finals, Rambis was chosen by new Minnesota president David Kahn from a group of finalists that also featured ESPN analyst Mark Jackson and Houston Rockets assistant coach Elston Turner.

Kahn interviewed more than a dozen candidates in a deliberate search that began after the NBA Draft in late June.

Rambis will almost certainly be the coach by the end of the season. David Kahn, to my knowledge, has never coached and Kahn has already admitted that the wolves are on a 2-3 year rebuilding plan. Since he has admitted that they are in a rebuilding plan, I am pretty confident that he hired a coach who he feels will see them through this time. I think Rambis will do a good job for the team even though they will almost certainly struggle next year, but I do think they have an opportunity to field a really good team in a few years because they have plenty of young talent, a lot of draft picks next year and a lot of expiring contracts to acquire more talent.

I liked this quote by Rambis from truehoop: “I have always thought that we should not try to pigeonhole guys by putting them into specific positions. Maybe it should be more like Europe (although I haven’t been to see what they actually do). Maybe we could teach everyone to dribble, pass, and shoot, regardless of size. Teach everyone to play facing the basket, or back to the basket. Teach them how to be basketball players, and then let them gravitate to what they are best suited to do.”

I HATE the pigeonholing of players into positions… just let them be players, see what they’re best at, and then let them play to their strengths… If your ‘PG’ is best posting up, give him the ball on the block! and if your best player in the pick-n-roll is your ‘SF’ (Hedo Turkoglu) put the ball in his hands! Who cares about positions…
