Dazzling Dunks and Basketball BloopersParticipantFirst time I’ve actually seen him play in person. Very impressed with his ball-handling ability and court vision. He basically handles and passes the ball like a point guard at 6-10. He’s so ambedextrious, it’s hard to tell if he’s right or left handed sometimes. Tremendous finisher who runs the floor about as well as anybody I’ve seen for his size.
If I were to nitpick to find flaws in his game the most obvious is that he doesn’t really shoot from the perimeter at this stage, although he does show pretty good mechanics to suggest he will develop a reliable jump shot down the road. At this level, he’s so much more athletic and skilled than his competition that he doesn’t really need it, although he will at the next level. He can also get a little careless with his passes at times and try to make the spectacular pass when it isn’t really there. Also, despite the fact that he is a creative finisher, he did show some tendencies to shy away from contact around the basket. However, all those issues can be corrected with work.
Can’t really gage yet whether he’s a future franchise level player or just a very good NBA player. Given his skill set, it will be fun to watch him continue to develop.

HitsterParticipantI’ve only seen this guy on limited highlights but he looks very good, his passing ability for a SF/PF has elite potential, he could be a superb point forward in the future.
Great athleticism and size for his age, the comparison they give on his profile on this site is T-Mac. I can see the great point forward skills T-Mac had being a fair comparison but Simmons is perhaps more a SF/PF whilst T-Mac was a SG/SF. Simmons may never quite be the scorer a peak T-Mac was but he is already bigger than T-Mac ever was and if he can score at 70% of what peak T-Mac was he’ll be a scary prospect.
I was going to suggest Grant Hill as a possible alternative comparison, superb point forward at his peak, not quite the explosive scorer as T-Mac was. I never saw a pre-Duke Grant play so please advise if Ben is anything like Grant was at a similar age.

joe2324Participantlet him play an NBA game first or even college before we make these comparisons? He looks unstoppable as do many prospects. We have no clue if he’ll turn into TMAC or a guy who is out of the league in five years.

ipowersParticipantLet me explain this to you. A comparison is not saying a kid will end up having that type of career. It gets very annoying when people try to sound more reasonable and smarter than everybody else when they make comments like the one you just made. Comparisons are the closest player their games resemble, not an indicator of what kind of career the player will have man. Thank you for your limited insight and perspective.

Rip255I’d neg that post 5 times if I could.
Wait until he’s played an NBA game before making a comparison? Why don’t we just wait until all these players are 35 and change the name of the website to "nbaretirement.net"

HitsterParticipantLamar Odom is a good mid-level comparison for him, a lot of us forget what a good player Lamar was in his own right as well as being a superb team player who happily played 3rd fiddle to the major stars for the team’s good and won 6th man awards etc.
He averaged as much as 5apg several seasons in his career as well as averaging over 8rpg across his career too.

Dazzling Dunks and Basketball BloopersParticipantThe T-Mac comparison is way off imo. I don’t see many similarities in their games at all. The way he plays is definitely much more similar to Odom with the big difference being that Odom was almost exclusively left hand dominant while Simmons seems to be able to use both hands almost equally well.

Taylor Gang MikeParticipantSimmons is more Mike Beasley. He can play the 3 or the 4 and he can post up, shoot and can handle.. He prolly is Beasley 2.0

ipowersParticipantNot even close man. Beasley was never as skilled as Simmons is. Beasley was a scorer pure and simple.

HitsterParticipantThe comparison with a current or long time NBA player is always very hard to quantify. A better example is when a more recently drafted player is used. Like Mudiay being compared to John Wall, Wall has only been in the NBA since 2010 so most of us will have seen him develop and recall what he was like at college as a rookie etc and can use that as a yard stick when Mudiay reaches the same milestones.
Using someone like T-Mac we all tend to think of prime Orlando/Houston era T-Mac when he was a lights out scorer, one of the best players in the NBA etc. I’ll admit I didn’t see Vancouver era T-Mac play so I don’t know what he was like as a teenage prospect.
Likewise with Odom we have to think more of the draft era Odom not the great intangibles Laker era Odom.

Taylor Gang MikeParticipantBeasley wasnt skilled?????????? hahahahaha are you serious. DO you know who Beasley is? Dude is prolly rhe most skilled player I have ever seen. Handle, Rebounding, Shooting. Say what you want about Maturity, because thats what people like to do now days, but B Easy had gifts you just cannot teach on the Basketball court. Simmons is Beasley. But I gotta see if Ben dominates at the college level like Mike did.

ipowersParticipantMichael Beasley is a better athlete and pure scorer but he has nowhere near the feel for the game, passing ability or ball handling that Ben has. If you needed Ben Simmons to play point forward and run your offense through, he could do it with his eyes closed and Beasley could not. If Beasley is the most skilled guy you’ve ever seen than you haven’t seen much

Dog_ShammdogParticipantI like the Beasley comp in terms of size, skill level and strength but Ben isn’t quite the athlete and Beasley isn’t on the same level in iq,. Simmons won’t be asked to do nearly as much as Beasley was in college, especially if Martin and Mickey return. Blakeney should help carry the scoring load as well. Depending on how he is used next year could change ppls comparisons. Personally, I think he’s Larry nance physically and athletically with Royce whites skill set. I see him avg 18 8 and 5 with a block and steal n a half per game. If Mickey and Martin leave early the rebounding and scoring numbers will go up (IMO) but assists will drop. I think they’ll return though and win the sec.

Rip255I actually think Simmon’s best comparison is Lebron James.
I’m not saying he’ll be the best player in the NBA, but I’d have no hesitation taking him #1 in the draft if he were eligible this year.
Similar size, passing & ball handling ability. Same unselfish approach to their play and great body control in the paint. I’d say similar outside shooting ability also.
Probably more a Carmello-level athlete than Lebron though. At 6’9" he’s still above average in the NBA and will be a match-up nightmare.

properbreaksParticipantHe’s a lot more athletic this year than last year for sure, then add an inch and half to his height along with tighter handles and you have a different player. I thought he was a real smart player last year, a future pro, but not a star in the making. I see him differently this year. It just shows you what can happen with development. He’s an interesting prospect, you never know how much more athletic he can get, how much more he could grow, his skills increase. He has a good feel for post play with his moves inside and nice floaters that you can get off anywhere.

ExumInfernoParticipantMaybe a comparison could be Dante Exum, start there and then add what Simmons is better at for the same age. Taller, left-handed which adds something different, maybe the ability to play four positions compared to Exum’s two or so. Exum was quicker, Simmons is craftier and might have better ballhandling ability.
The Jazz would probably not mind if they could put Simmons on the same team as Exum in a couple of drafts down the road.

Dog_ShammdogParticipantyou do realize that they play completely different positions as far as the nba is concerned don’t you? just Bc simmons brings the ball up the floor in high school, does not make him a point guard. Simmons will be a sf that plays small ball power forward. Ideally. He could wind up somewhere that needs him at the four and as previously stated, he is still growing. Exum has always been projected as ideally being an nba point guard with the size and athleticis, to guard multiple positions. Simmons may be able to as well. There ya go, one bball thing they have in common. They can each guard multiple positions.
