DolanCareParticipantThe Wizards have cracked the .500 mark finally, and have beaten some great teams in the process. I don’t watch the Wizards religiously, but have been able to catch a dozen or so games. I’m a John Wall fan and want to see him succeed. The Wizards have gone on a mini-streak as of late. I wouldn’t care usually, but they’ve actually beaten some quality teams.
But after watching the Wizards upset a handful of contenders over the past few weeks, I’m still not sure what they’ve done to get these wins. They don’t shoot the ball very well, and don’t have a great defensive players in their front court.
The only thing that I could dig up is the team’s ability to generate turnovers from opponents.
Over the past twelve games they have gone 8-4. In games won, they turned over the ball 12.13 times while opposing teams have coughed up the ball 16.75. That’s almost 5 more turnovers a game. Not to mention, one of those wins against the 76ers, they had their reserves out there because it was a blow out.
In games lost, they had an even amount of turnovers as their opponent: 15.15 – 15.15.
Not exactly groundbreaking findings, as it’s well known that turnovers often decide games. So I open it up to the forum: Anyone notice why the Wizards have been able to go on this streak?

Kleb2424ParticipantThis team has talent. One of my favorite back courts in the game. A deadly shooter off the bench, and steady bigs that compliment each other. Their bench can go deep and some of the younger players are starting to respond to their role. They’ve managed to stay relatively healthy this year and they are preparing the backups for larger roles if needed. I think they could use an upgrade with a combo guard for immediate depth and a big that can pick and pop with Wall and excel. They have loads of youth and energy and the future looks bright in DC.

TarHeelRavenParticipantI think it all starts with having a healthy john Wall. he’s averaging 19 points and 8 assists and should be an all-star reserve. Beal is averaging 16 points also. Wall and Beal should eventually be one of the best backcourts in the league if they both stay healthy. Gortat has been solid averaging 11 and 9 and 2 blocks. This team is talented. Six players are averaging double figure points and Trevor Ariza is averaging 14 and 6 which is really big. It will be interesting to see how Otto Porter develops. He was out for a while with an injury. The Wiz have a very good team and should only contine to get better,

Da1potParticipantThey are actually a very underrated defensive team IMO. Ariza is one of the best perimeter defenders in the league and is the leader of the team on that side. He can guard point guards-power fowards. Wall is big, strong and fast on defense and is finally starting to take more disciplined approach to that side of his game. Beal and Gortat are both underrated on-ball defenders as well.
Nene is an atrocious defender, but he is is still a big body nonetheless.
They are currently 8th out of 30 teams in defensive rating and 10th in opponents ppg. They are winning withgood defense and by forcing turnovers as No_Left mentioned.

HitsterParticipantThe Wizards have a nice mix on their roster and they have scoring depth across the team. Wall and Beal give them a great backcourt going forward. Otto Porter was seen as an intangibles type player who would be a great asset to any team when he was drafted. He has only played just over 20 NBA games so will gradually get more minutes but will still need time to develop which is why having Ariza and Webster there is very useful as they can hold the fort to give Porter the time he needs to get up to speed in the NBA.
Gortat and Nene aren’t spectacular scorers but give Washington 25ppg combined, Gortat has been a rock solid defensive anchor this term and Nene is a skilled big man who often makes an understated contribution. But his skillset is appreaciated by his team mates and he provides a good veteran presence. I recall that John Wall noticed the difference in playing with a more skilled big in Nene rather than JaVale McGee as it gave him more passing options and someone who he felt comfortable giving the ball to knowing it would not be wasted.

chall23ParticipantWhenever I watch the Wiz play I always notice how much better they seem too play when Vesely is on the court with Wall. Those two players have pretty decent chemistry together and I feel like vesely should really start and they should bring Nene off the bench with extended minutes. Nene could create more mismatches with the 2nd unit and the offense could run through him more. Jan plays a lot without the ball and sets picks and doesn’t demand the ball because he lacks confidence is his shot but he hustles relentlessly and with him on the court the Wizards could emulate the Suns with a Fast pace offense. Wall, Beal and Jan could really be intriguing and fun to watch. Maybe I’m a sucker because I thought he would have been better thus far because of his athleticism. I know he gets into foul trouble too but I just wish Whitman would try this out more because I guarantee Jan goes to a team like the Spurs and becomes a really solid player. Hey, maybe im wrong but I think I may be on to something!

The Scare Crow RisesParticipantIn the playoffs they will need a go to scorer…
If the Wizards could get Carmelo Anthony they’d become the 3rd best Eastern Conference Team and a potential threat to Miami or Indiana in a 7 game series
