gopack10ParticipantSo many people on here have given Aran crap about constantly harping on Thon Maker’s age and having him so low on the mock for so long.

Looks like Aran was right all along…

Robb_CParticipantYa, I hinted at this awhile back in 2009 about Thon, all the redflags have been there for years..

Hype MachineI dont buy it. Nothing original about these claims. Theyve been around for years.
Theres no proof…just a journalist who has spoken to sources trying to get a story out there.
If he had a birth certificate, he’d provide one. But since he doesnt…what is he meant to do?

machu46ParticipantI understand that he can’t really do anything about it, but NBA teams can’t either. If a team thinks he’s really 23, then they think he’s really 23. There’s no real reason for them to assume he’s 19 anymore than there is to assume he’s 23.

Robb_CParticipantThon Makers situation reeks of a similar prospect, Mac Koshwal who actually played in college and was highly touted in HS.. His real age came out eventually and his stock dropped almost immediately.

Hype MachineIts all guesswork. What age would people have guessed Greg Oden was if he lost his birth certificate. 37?
Steph Curry still looks 19.
Ive read one dodgy report after another on all bball topics these last few days.
Every one with a Twitter account is bringing out their A-grade BS.
I believe teams will be cautious but if he is indeed 19, will wish they took a chance on him.

MopgrassParticipantSenegal doesn’t keep track of this sort of stuff. If he’s older, he probably doesn’t know and we probably can’t find out. I think it’s a smoke screen. Last year people complained about Myles Turner’s gait. Two GM’s speculated recently that he’d go 15-22 and 12-19. I bet he does.

CDPHParticipantThis is a tough situation, but I do think Maker is closer to 19 than 21.
Unlike some of the other guys with these concerns, he looks young. He carries himself like a 19 year old and he’s just now starting to put on a little weight, which speaks to natural physical maturity.
I wouldn’t touch him above 20 anyway, but after that point he’d be in play for me.

Robb_CParticipantThe Kid has been enrolled into sham schools and couldn’t enroll into college, I believe Thon couldn’t qualify due to a combination of lack of fundamental education and unknown background.. Thon Maker and his handlers knew he could never go to College because the NCAA Clearinghouse would have a field day on his A$$

European BasketballerParticipantI do not know why this is surprise to anyone. Teams in Europe know the date of births of players from most African countries is suspect. Like how teams in Spain said
Biyombo was 6 years older than NBA said he was. Or how teams in Spain said Ibaka was 4 years older than NBA said he was.
Olajuwon and Mutombo both claim they were much older than NBA listed them.
NBA seems not to understand that in those kinds of countries, they just list the time when the person first went to a doctor or hospital as date of birth. In some cases they don’t see a doctor or go to a hospital until 5-6 years after they are born.
But NBA always uses that, and not when they are born, as "date of birth". It’s pretty funny actually.
Same with how everyone in Europe knew Ersan Ilyasova had different birth info and even changed name (Arsen Ilyasov is how we was called in Europe, with different date of birth, and different place of birth), yet NBA used the data as being real.
Or same with some Chinese players. There was a copy of Yi Jianlian’s birth date, listed as being 3 years earlier than what NBA listed, and yet even with copies of this available, NBA never changes birth date.
But in Europe, it is well known that you cannot trust most birth dates of players from most places in Africa and from Turkey and China, and even can’t trust some of the places of birth and some of the names from players in Turkey.
There are probably many such cases that we don’t even know about,

jpitkinParticipantBiyombo is officially listed by all sources as 23. I do not believe you are implying that the NBA thinks that Biyombo is 17, so perhaps you just unfairly assumed wrong on this one?

GronounoursParticipantRight, the NBA has no idea African prospects could be much older than listed. Only we Europeans know that.
You’re bashing the NBA all the time, but at the same time your highest hope is to see slow-footed Greek players drafted in the first round. Why don’t you just watch Olympiakos and Panionos, and stop whining about the NBA on this site?

HitsterParticipantA lot of players from overseas may not have had their dates of birth accurately but I’ve never heard ages disputed in other sports as much as in basketball. I can understand with a draft prospect it could be a lot different drafting say someone who was 25 put was claiming to be 19, but a year or two difference doesn’t make a huge change. Hield is 4 years older than some guys in the draft for example.
The thought that Mutombo was older than he is listed always amuses me as he played to an elite level well into his 30’s and could have actually been an elite player until he was nearer 40.
There was a very famous English Cricketer called Basil D’Oliveria who came to England to escape the South African Apartheid system as he was classed as a “Cape Coloured”. Basil when he finally made his England debut was initially listed as being 31, this soon turned out to be 34. Basil played for England until he was 40 and played first class cricket until he was 48. When Basil died in 2011 he was listed as being 80 years old but it has been strongly rumoured he was at least 83 which would have meant he was nearer to 40 than 30 when he made his England debut and still playing at top domestic level when he was over 50.

tuck243ParticipantAnd I always hate when they submit those findings without any facts outside of his sources. Even his sources don’t have the facts, so how do they know? Maybe Thon is older, but how can you tell? 19 vs 22 is a major difference in the NBA? How so? Do you have ANY proof that players are able to get better faster at a younger age? Like what evidence can you point to that a 22 year old player will be less likely to become a good player compared to a 19 year old one? And this is my point, I hate irresponsible journalism.

DukeDaSquadParticipantHis development from the moment he started getting coverage in middle school is in line with players in his age group so I dont doubt that hes 19. He was growing into his body, becoming more coordinated, athletic, and now hes finally putting on some weight.
