He is up to 7’1 now.Probably still just 200 pounds but there is not much that he can’t do on the basketball court. He has length obviously. He can run and jump like a player that is much small. Can change direction off of the dribble. Can shoot the 3 ball, blocks shots, can pull off of the dribble, can take it to the rack going to his left hand.  This kid has to be the best prospect in all of High school basketball.

A new Ballislife mixtape just dropped of him I can’t seem to post it. If anyone else can I would appreciate it.

That class is going to be very deep. Maker,Jackson, Giles, and Tatum all have elite level potential and look like future studs. Which will be refreshing because the previous class 2015 seems to lack star power

Saw Thon at OVO/Bounce in August, he can definitely move for his size and he showed a lot of confidence. First play of the game, stroked a triple, than got a couple of close range buckets, including a nice dunk. Think he finished with 9 in the game, coming off the bench. He was indeed facing a team that had Amir Johnson and Brandon Jennings. When Amir finally decided enough is enough, Thon was a little overwhelmed and production sort of subsided.

Either way, impressive for a 16-year old to have that confidence and I came away pretty impressed. I am not sure he is the best prospect in HS basketball, though he looks to be up there. Like where Aran has him right now in his class, though a lot of people rate him #1 and he has probably accomplished more on the AAU circuit at the U17 level than just about anyone in 2016.

My biggest issue is definitely his body. He has long arms and I would guess his wingspan was longer than the 7-2 they measured at LeBron this summer, but his frame is so frail. One could point to his age, it just looks like he will have a hard time gaining weight. For all of the supposed weight training he did last year in the States, still only weighed in at 194 this summer at LeBron. He looks to have bulked up a tad since than, just will be really hard to establish position.

He runs the floor well and can put the ball on the floor, just sort of unsure if he will be able to do that at a higher level. While I like that he can shoot, think he will need to establish a post game and that could be difficult without building serious upper and lower body strength. He is not soft, it just can definitely take a toll on ones body if you do not have some girth to go up against guys your size or bigger. Not to many people will be taller than Thon, but bigger will most likely be the case.

Still a very promising prospect and the video was nice, shows some definite agility. That last kid I do not think was juked as much as he seemed terrified of seeing a 7-footer racing at him, lol. Was pretty impressed that Carlisle topped Huntington Prep, they have some really solid players and getting 20-10 against Angel Delgado and Thomas Bryant deserves props.

I still have reservations about calling him the top HS prospect right now, just could definitely change if he somehow gets some meat on his bones. Even so, it is starting to look like he will be a really big time recruit. If people want to read more about him, I have some really interesting articles on his profile and some videos that show his line of development: [Player:Thon Maker].        I think he can get up to about 230 as an adult. He seems to have a body that can add weight better than a guy like Isaiah Austin for example also moves better than him. I think anything over 230 pounds is pushing it though. I also would like to know if Thon isn’t the best prospect who do you feel is the best prospect in High school basketball?

Those are the two guys I think could be better prospects than him in the Class of 2016 at this point. [Player: Josh Jackson] is a really long, athletic and smooth wing who seems to have a world of potential to be pretty special. [Player: Harry Giles] tore his ACL, but he has a great frame and skill set, moves well and had a very advanced skill set at 15 years old. Giles definitely looks like a guy who can add weight and be a real problem. I think Harry would be #1 in the Class had he not went down.

The other guy I really like is [Player: Jayson Tatum], though I see Aran has him lower than I would put him. I think Thon at #3 is not bad, this class could be pretty special. Of course, [Player: DeAndre Ayton] is supposed to be an absolute freak and have heard great things about a couple other 2017’s in [Player: Jarred Vanderbilt] and [Player: Troy Brown Jr].

In 2015, am really big on [Player: Ben Simmons], kid is already a beast strength wise and has some definite skill. Thon is incredibly intriguing, the strength factor really worries me and if he never gets past 230, kind of scary. As much as NBA weight reports may say otherwise, even Kevin Garnett and Kevin Durant made it past 230. One final thing I will say is I am not entirely certain about how he is being handled. I wondered what the hell he was doing in Toronto when Adidas Nations was the same week. Think he would have benefitted much more from Nations than playing in OVO/Bounce playing against two NBA guys going half-@ssed for under 20 minutes once.

You make some very good points about all the prospects. Does anyone know what is going on with DeAndre Ayton though? I had heard he isn’t even in America or something crazy like that. Is there any truth to this or what? Which high school is he at?

Was hearing that he might have moved back to Bahamas for the year, but I think he is part of this program through Balboa City:

            http://www.monarchbasketballacademy.com

Pretty sure that is him on the front page. If you go to Full Time Hoops, a site that covers the San Diego area, he says that Ayton is there. Even if he is taking the year off, that kids progress over a year was pretty amazing. People who have seen him came away incredibly impressed with his athleticism for his size, plus he looks like he can add some weight as well. Either way, Wiggins moved back to Canada for a year before his final two in the States and it did not seem to hurt his prospects.

Alright thanks very much for clearing the air. I am also very high on him. He is a legit 6’10 with very good athleticism that will probably only get better and he can do a lot of things with the ball as well as be a shot blocking presence. I must admit his potential is extremely high. I just hope all the attention does not get to the heads of these young players.

He’s really come far. Imagine Joel Embiid had started playing as early as him. Once he adds some weight and picks up his intensity, he’s going to be a real force on the defensive end as an anchor. Hopefully, though, I hope that doesn’t add to the Garnett comparisons. I don’t think any 10th grader should have expectations like that looming over their shoulder. Inevitably though, those comparisons are going to be flaring up even more often than they are now. I hope for his sake they just don’t get too out of hand.

He definitely has a high ceiling. 7’1 with that skillset is pretty amazing. However, he needs to put on a LOT of weight before we can think about his potential college or pro success.

Not really. Austin was tall and had skill, but he did not move like this kid.  Maker has shown more improvement in his agility in a span of a year and half than Austin has in his entire life.  Austin still moves like he’s getting adjusted to a growth spurt.

Austin moves extremely fluid for a guy his size although it isnt the same thing. Where I think the comparison plays a factor us the overall weight. Most of Isaiahs struggles are due to being the weakest Forward/Center on the floor as a stretch big. He gas great skills and good instincts but he cant gain post position on offence or defence, he gets bullied in the paint, cant finish with contact, his game really relies on strength which he does not have.

Thon will not likely be expeccted to play Center in the pros as he has already shown more then enough skill/potential to be molded into a SF/PF combo with perimeter defence abillities. Due to his exceptional quickness and body control he should be able to gaurd other positions.

Ok, this post is high on speculation and a long shot to say the least. But read on…

Is it possible that Australia could claim the top overall draft pick in 4 years out of 6?

    1. Kyrie Irving – Born in Australia and former #1 pick
    2. Dante Exum – A long shot in a stacked draft, but some saying he could go #1 in 2014.
    3. Ben Simmons – #3 in 2016 mock (NBA Draft Room).
    4. Thon Maker – #1 ranked 2017 Prospect

With these guys all growing up together (plus Bogut, Mills etc), is it possible that the Australian national team could be the #2 National team by 2018?

Still, the yet to be drafted ones are looking like high lottery picks. It does still take a major team effort, though and it is difficult for 21 and 22 year olds to beat more seasoned players. Even for people claiming Canada as medal contenders in 2016, would wait until about 2020, when their big core players will have more experience under their belt.

Also, must consider that Kyrie is playing for the US and Thon Maker has yet to suit up for the Aussies nationally. Very interesting article from August in The Sydney Morning Herald focusing on Thon and alluding to the unlikely event of Thon ever playing for Australia. His guardian, Ed Smith, also worked with Ater Majok and I guess other South Sudanese immigrants in Australia. It seems like he has a very hazy relationship with the Aussie National Team and has kept others he is associated with from playing in the past.

When I saw this, just led to even more questions as to why Thon was in Toronto that weekend and not at Adidas Nations. He went to Nations in 2012, played for 2014 Team USA Blue, was the youngest player on the team. In the game I got to see on TV, he was physically dominated, which I guess is to be expected when you are going up against players a year or two older than you. This year could have been a lot more interesting, as he had definitely bulked up a bit. The competition at Nations would be much better and more hands on than what he got in Toronto.

So, while one could imagine a stacked Boomer squad by 2018, think that they will be most likely carrying only Ben Simmons and Dante Exum as far as former or potential top picks go. They both played up with the Senior men this summer, in limited roles. Lord knows if Andrew Bogut, who will be 33 by the time 2018 rolls around, will be healthy. It is alright to be excited about the Australian National team, just think people should realize that it will likely take more time than just 4-5 years from now, in my mind. Same goes for Canada. There are still a lot of tough teams in Europe who play incredibly well together and their shooting really make them difficult match-ups in International competition.

I have always wondered how in the randomness of humans we haven’t been able to find one 7’1 guy that is actually athletic and actually has semi-guard skills. We always talk about Dirk. Dirk is EXTREMELY skilled for a 7 footer, but he does not have "guard" skills, he just has an elite post up and face up game. The closest thing, I guess would be KD, but he is only 6’10, and so razor thin he really doesn’t use his height to his advantage vs big men, only other wing players. This kid is miles away from the NBA, but he honestly could be one of the best prospects ever if he grows another inch or two and continues to show the off the dribble ability and shooting ability is appears he is tapping into.

I have one questoion for you, will he play C,or potentially be biggest missmatch ever if he’s playing 3 or 4.Durant sometimes looks unfair but imagine legit 7 foot guy playing point forward

Now he wasn’t 7’1" but Chris Webber had some pretty nifty guard skills. I think the reason we haven’t seen more big men play point forward is that in those rare cases where you have players who are big enough but also quick enough with enough skill, ala Kevin Durant or Magic Johnson, move outside to the perimeter where they have more space to operate and create mismatches. Other teams would usually rather put a smaller, quicker defender on such players rather than having their big men get blown by every possesion.

Dirk has guard skills, just not a guard body.  Extreme height can be a disadvantage handling the ball, fighting through screens and defending on the perimeter which skill is really hard to make up for.  Plus, shorter players tend to have better coordination/kinesthetic sense.  Guys like Dirk and KG could be guards if they didn’t get so tall.  Durant is a rare player who has such great handles and athleticism that he can handle the ball like a guard despite being as tall as he is.  Maybe he is not strong enough to be a big man, but his perimeter game wouldn’t be what it is if he had a thicker build.

7’1" is really tall, so finding players that tall who have adequate athleticism for the NBA is very difficult, much less players of that height with guard skills.  Most guys that tall could y on height playing around the rim in their youth, so even most basketball players who are that tall aren’t necessarily the most skilled.

I love his game alot. BUT he wont get to do these things in college. So they really dont matter. When Andre Drummond was in HS he was a guy who had a great handle as a 7-footer but never used that part of his game in college. Coaches didnt let him. Same with Isaiah Austin from Baylor.

I wouldn’t say they don’t matter, but, unless he truly becomes KD-esque, you are correct he isn’t going to be handling the ball beyond the arc very often.  Still, his exceptional coordination and ball skills should still translate to a more limited role.  Anthony Davis comes to mind as a guy who, by maintaining the court sense, coordination, touch, and body control of a guard, could translate his perimeter skills from high school into interior skills in college and the NBA.  Thon Maker’s development as a prospect will hinge largely on his willingness to develop as a big man, where he will necessarily spend most of the time off-the-ball.  Whether Maker attempts to emulate KD, Dirk, KG, or the Brow will have a huge effect on his NBA potential.

Looked like a pretty intense game. Oak Hill won 51-49, Cody Martin made the game winning lay-up. Thon finished with 10, 15 and 4 blocks. Carlisle had played Oak Hill about three weeks ago as well and lost 60-55, with Thon getting 17 and 10. It looks like Thon has a couple of other decent players on his team, nonetheless very impressive that a team he is featured on kept that close to Oak Hill.

Rodger Bohn did a write-up on a few of the prospects, looks like it got pretty damn heated near the end. [Player: Thon Maker] obviously stands out, he is #14. Eric Johnson is the other player mentioned on Carlisle, he is #0 while #32 in dark is a junior and had a good game, Kaleb Johnson.

[Player: Cody Martin] is 5, twin bro [Player: Caleb Martin] is #4, Brandon Jennings’ younger brother [Player: Terrence Phillips] is #3 (makes a beautiful drive at 2:03). [Player: Rokas Gustys] is #33, big guy from Lithuania who still is on the market for colleges. #23, who guards Thon at various points, is [Player: Trevor Manuel], top 50-60 or so prospect in 2015. Oak Hill was without [Player: Shelton Mitchell], seen in a track suit. Well, thought it was cool, hope you all enjoy:

Heard from one of the top recruiting scout sites that he is old for his class. Will be 20 near the end of his freshman year in college

      1. Your a bit late to this threads party.

      2. When your that tall with that kind of skill it doesn’t matter very much if you are 1 year older than normal.

It’d probably actually work to his advantage if the age limit is changed to 20.
