Your a GM and you just drafted Bosh or Wade.

Do you trade them one of them for a potential year rental of Duncan, Dirk or KG with no promises?

Wiggins has as much potential as a young Bosh or Wade. It took Bosh and Wade a few years to come into there own as it will Wiggins. I excluded Melo because he has never averaged less than 20 point a game in his NBA career. There is no NBA team Wiggins could lay for this year where he would average twenty points a game this season (not even Philly). Melo only spent one year in college like Wiggins. Wade spent one three years at Marquette, one of which was a academic red-shirt year.

Bosh’s first two years in ppg…11.5, 16.8 and then 5 straight years of 22+.

    Wade’s first two …16.2 then 24 and then 6 seasons of 24+.

Wiggins as a prospect is likely somewhere between Wade and Bosh, IMO.

    What would you guys do?

I HIGHLY doubt the cavs would make the deal if love didn’t give a promise. Are there reports he will not commit to cavs immediately upon trade? If love says he won’t commit and will play free agency, then no I don’t do the trade. But if he commits, then yes I would. Just like I would have for Duncan, dirk or kg in 2003 without hesitation. Although to be fair, love is not quite prime duncan , dirk , kg level so this whole scenario is a little off to begin with.

Also the question depends on what teams immediate needs are. The 2003 raptors and heat were in rebuild mode and potential over immediate results was more important for them. Where the current cavs are in win right now mode so potential takes a bit of a backseat to someone who is a star now.

who is a top 10 player in the League, in his prime. What if Love opts in only 1 year, he has a fourth year option would you trade for him if he comes with two years?

Do you trade Bosh or Wade for a year or two of Duncan.

Who says it will be a 1 year rental though?

I thought the one of the reasons the trade rumours increased was because of the rumour of Love saying he would resign with the Cavs – it makes sense to resign if you are playing with the Lebron & Irving, two players he knows.

Love clearly wants help and to compete in the playoffs. Resigning with the Cavs could give him that.

I dont get this site. Pre draft, people on this site were talking so much crap about how great the draft talent was and how much the #1 was worth. There was no chance you’d get support for packaging the top pick for Love. Now, after the "best player" Wiggins was taken with 1, the trade scenarios for Love flood in.

For the record, 2003 Wade or Bosh wouldve been shipped off very quickly if i was getting a KG, Dirk or an Old Man Riverwalk in return. Kevin Love is a different story. He is not any of those three guys. He is David Lee with a 3 pointer. I think you’ll find that he’ll become the scapegoat very quickly if he goes to CLE and they dont immediately win.

Kevin Love has already said he’d love to resign with Cleveland now that LeBron is there, hasn’t he?

In your hypothetical scenario above, I would definitely trade either one of them for a guy like Tim Duncan if he was committed to playing there long-term.  In this case however, I would not trade Wiggins for Love for a couple reasons:

    1. Love <<< Duncan

    2. Cleveland already has enough starpower between LeBron and Kyrie.  They need depth.

    3. By trading Wiggins (and whatever other salaries are needed to make it work) for Love, you’re pretty much sacrificing all your other young players too because you’ll likely only be able to resign one or two of them.  I think a team built around LeBron and Kyrie while also having great depth is better than a team of LeBron, Love, and Kyrie and nobody else.

Your point #2 is what I’ve been thinking about this whole time regarding this trade. The Cavs should not give up this much depth, young talent to build on, defense and frankly starter-quality players (Dion, Wiggins,  Bennett, + whatever 1st rd picks are included) to get 1 really outstanding player.  The Spurs showed Miami that depth is key in the Finals and not just having 3 great players and veterans.  I would rather miss the Finals this year and build with this young budding core.

And none of this mentions how strapped teams get with 3 players on Max Contracts.  They essentially can’t afford anything but veterans and low-caliber role players to round out the team.  We have 3 young guys still on rookie deals where their value will be superb over the next 4 years.

Love is a great player right now, but I don’t want us to purge our whole system for instant gratification and then a bunch of mediocrity. I’d rather keep the foundation and build up.  It’s a pretty damn good foundation already (52+ Wins right?).
