L.ShapParticipantI have a tough time with this one. What is the definition of a pure point guard?
Chris Paul and Deron Williams are undoubtedly the best point guards in the game today, but are they necessarily "pure" point guards. They typically lead their team in scoring.
Who are some of the pure point guards in today’s game?

John-Bryant-54It’s not that Paul and Williams aren’t pure, they are simply more aggresive.

JNixonParticipantChris Paul and Deron Williams are the best pure PG’s. Also, Rajon Rondo is another guy who defines a pure PG.

NJHooper95ParticipantI do believe Jennings in a pure point guard, people got caught up in his scoring after the 55pt game. If you watch Jennings play he runs the offense and looks to move the ball though he is capable of big scoring nites. Kidd, Rondo, D Will, Paul, and Nash and all pure points guard in my opinion. True williams and paul score alot but their scoring is needing in order for their teams to have a chance to win. The league is lacking pure point guards without a question.

SupParticipantThe pure point guard is extinct. Most guards now are 6’2″ and over which means they grew up scoring. I’m sure you can find one one the bench, but as far as starters Raymond Felton prob. the closest thing.

Im Your FatherParticipantSup that doesn’t make sense. Ray Felton is more of a pure point guard than Paul or Williams when he is a worse passer than both. Him scoring less doesn’t mean he is more of a point guard, it just means he isn’t as good at basketball. I think there are a lot of pure point guards. To name a few:
Paul
Williams
Kidd
Rondo
Collison
Jennings
Being able to score doesn’t make you not a pure point guard.

Im Your FatherParticipantI think you are being sarcastic, I really hope you are. But for the purposes of this post, I’m going to assume you aren’t…
Ok so first of all Chris Paul isn’t 6’2 or over, so I don’t see how he meets your rather flawed criteria for not being a pure point so he should be ok. I don’t have to make any further argument here, although that would be rather easy.
Deron Williams is able to dominant a game without scoring at all. Have you ever noticed how he makes all his teammates better? Watching him play it is incredibly evident that he is first and foremost a natural playmaker. Even at Illinois he was the primary ball handler and facilitator, even when they also had the much smaller Dee Brown.
Jason Kidd for most of his career wasn’t a very good shooter or scorer and he always shot very low percentages from the floor. What made him great was the fact that he was a fantastic passer who could make scrubs look like good players and control the tempo of the game.
Rondo also isn’t 6’2, but… how could you argue he’s a natural scorer when he sucks at shooting. He is one of the worst shooters in the NBA, he shoots a miserable percentage from downtown and really only takes 3s when he’s wide open, so he’s an even worse long-range shooter than his numbers show. He is a good player because he does all the little things other than scoring the ball.
Neither Jennings or Collison are 6’2, so I’ll just leave it at that because I feel like I’m getting redundant here.

McWinningParticipantYou mean mr 5.6 assists a game in 33 minutes a game is a purer point guard just because he doesnt shoot much?
Give me on reason why hes a purer points guard? hes an average runner of the offense 18th highest ast/to ratio, and 19th in the league in assists.
What makes him a purer point guard, is it because he cant score like them?

McWinningParticipantAnd the purest point guards of all time have been over 6”1, Nash is 6”3, Kidd is 6”4, Payton was 6”4, Magic was 6”9, Isiaah was 6”2.
Unless you consider players point guards just by height, you hasve no idea what your talking about.

SupParticipantYou’re right Chris Paul is 6’0″ but we all know he is a ball hog aka not a pure pg. Brandon Jennings scored 53 points in one game as a rookie, that disqualifies him. And Rondo has a serious shooting weakness so he can only pass and dribble, that just makes you a weak basketball player, not a true pg. There are no John Stocktons in the NBA anymore. Jason Kidd is not a relevant player in the NBA. Derron Williams is like Eric Gordon, too short and chubby to play shooting guard. Derron Williams was just smart enough to call himself a pg. However a pure pg he is not.

ChewyParticipantMike Conley has always been one that looks to facilitate the offense. He really is only agressive on the break.
Darren Colison is more of a defender and passer than a scorer.
Andre Miller has always been an unselfish lead guard.
Derek Fisher is the definition of a "team concept" guard.

GalamothParticipantStatistically, I would say that averaging in the neighborhood of 420-430 ish assist while having a 3 or better Assist/turnover ration would qualify you as more of a pure point guard. I make would an exception for Steve Nash because he tends to stuff the turnover category as well but there’s no argument that he’s one of the best passing 1’s in the game.
That said, you don’t need a pure point in this league to be successful. You need a scoring threat at that position who is simultaneously a strong ball handler and a mentally sound player. The only exception to this is if you have a mega star like Kobe or Lebron who tend to dominate the ball and have the ability to do all the things normally affiliated with the point.
