Me and a friend got into a lil debate about what makes someone have more potential in certain cases. One example is Blake over Love as far as potential. We all Know Blake has more potential but some say one reason is that Blake is a Rookie and Love is a third year player. But they both are from the same HS class. So with other players who are rookies (while the other is a second or third year player) does that mean the rookie would have more potential even if they came out the Same year in HS? Will Sidney be considered a player with more potential then Cousins if he comes in a has a good rookie year because he is a rookie and Cousins is a second or third year player?  Another main thing people say bring upabout a player’s potential is how tall or athletic they are even though most bust are either tall, or very athletic or both and the players who are more skilled tend to not become busts

Players considered busts/skilled players who haev done well

    Stromile Swift/big baby

    Yi Jilian/al hortford

    Julian wright/mike conley

    rodney carney/J.J Reddick

I’m not saying just overlook the long athletic guy because if they do pan out they can end up being very very good (Blake,Rudy Gay,Nick Young)  But i wonder why the Skill guys get overlooked so much when there are maybe two or three time more bust from the Tall Athletic guys

The reason why there are more athletic busts is because they’re taken earlier, I mean if that much skilled unathletic players were drafted in the top 5, we’d see far more busts, there are some already: Morrison, Hawes, Shelden Williams, Mike Dunleavy (although it’s probably the injuries) and etc. It’s just that the athletic guys are usually more hyped (which is not surprising because their game is more exciting to watch).

    Also Yi is pretty skilled

And Conley didn’t live up to half the hype he had.

I think its because the More athletic guys are guys teams hope will get better down the line and the teams figure they have such a high upside that they can sit and wait awhile and watch them develop.  I never considered Sheldon Williams to be skilled he dnt show alot of post moves in college imo. I did think mike Dunlevy would play better but he has played well putting up 20ppg when he was healthy. Hawes is athletic and tall so he falls into that catagory. Morrison is the one skilled guy who hasn’t seemed to pan out. If Millsap, Landry,Blair were drafted higher they would not be considered bust

Considering the Guys drafted behind Conley i dont think he hasn’t lived up to where he was drafted

you will never know what is POTENTIAL…mostly yeahh it’s athleticism because don’t forget basketball is sport..but sometimes athletic freaks becomes busts sometimes superstars..same with avarage guys..i think next to athleticism work ethic and feel for the game is in the mix of potential

you have to look at everything. Personally i put more emphasis in a players weaknesses over his strengths when i evaluate players. If there are glaring weakness or areas where i dont think a player will translate to the nba, then i dont get too excited about him putting up numbers or proving himself. Take a guy with upside and no glainrg weaknesses, and im more likley to take him even if he hasnt developed and dominated as much as some other palyers. But it really is a case by case basis with everything being taken into account for each player.

I think it is pretty much impossible to figure out potential. There have been guys who look like they will be fringe NBA players turn into all stars and Guys who look like they will be Allstars turn into european career players. Even when looking at there weaknesses ( which i used to do). I used to be on the bandwagon of undersized guys cant do much in the NBA with the main example for me being Boozer. I thought he would struggle alot in the NBA but of course i was wayyyy off with him. I think the reason we can never tell is we don’t know how hard a player is gonna work or what type of drive they have to become good/great. Honestly there have been guys that have come into the NBA with Kobe Bryants or Dwayne Wades skill set ( when they were rookies) but just didnt work as hard or have the drive to improve

Conley is actually starting to look pretty good lately.  I kind of figure he may blossum late like Felton is with the Knicks after being an afterthought in Charlotte.

Stro Swift is the only one of those guys who was picked higher than his "skilled" counterpart. Other than that, i agree with the premise. Skill is the most important thing, but athletism and size never hurt.
