DolanCareParticipantThe title for this post may be a little much considering that this team is 0-3. But in each loss, the Magic have competed until the end with some of the best teams in the league. (Washington, OKC and Chicago). And I know that I’m not espousing anything new- I’m hardly telling tales out of school when stating that this entire forum is obsessed with this young group.
Some takeaways: (1) Channing Frye may have the worst contract in the league once Joe Johnson’s act of usurpage comes off the books. This team is in desperate need of shooting yet Frye can’t see the floor. (2) Victor Oladipo will be a consistent name in DPOY talks going forward. He’s no Kawhi Leonard, but the dude has lightening quick hands and has the foot speed to convert any poke-away into an easy two.
The Big Question: Vucevic is one of their best players, the most consistent offensive player. But Orlando plays their best at a breakneck speed. They caught up with Chicago last night once they went small and ran Mirotic and Gasol off the floor. This more often than not involved benching Vucevic for chunks of time. In addition, this team’s calling card is really their stifling defense. Vucevic does not quite help in this area.
I love Vucevic, but with a roster of athletes such as Oladipo, Payton, Gordon, Hezonja and even Fournier, is their a real future for an old school lumbering center? Should they sell high on the young/talented post-scorer and mega rebounding Vucevic?

phila9012ParticipantHopefully thibs will wait another year and take over for the twolves. They will be ready to win then and thibs could put them over the top. With wiggins, lavine, muhammed, rubio, towns, jones, dieng having 2 more years to develop. He would bring the defense and the experience to players who would be ready to win. They would have like 4 or 5 years to make something of that team which would be enough because both towns and wiggins should be borderline all stars and borderline all defensive team players. Thibs could run them into the ground too because they would all still be relatively young.

Andrew1984ParticipantI’m very confident that this team is going to challenge for a top-4 seed. I could see them anywhere from third to sixth in the east. The big knock on them is that their guards aren’t very good perimeter shooters, which certainly is warranted, but what Payton and ‘Dipo lack, they get from Harris, Vucevic, and now Hezonja.
They just have so much talent, and now they have a coach that will kick them in the pants defensively and bring some toughness out of them.
It’s not that hard to collect talent in the NBA; the challenge is to piece it all together, and that’s what remains to be seen in Orlando.

HitsterParticipantThe team can still play hugely uptempo with Vucevic on the floor but it would mean that he wouldn’t be as much threat on offence. In effect he’d be the defensive anchor get the rebound and help to launch the fast break but he’d not be galloping up the court to take a shot.
The Suns worked this way when they had Shaq and even further back, the Showtime Lakers used Kareem as the anchor in his later years.

NBAjunkie81ParticipantEverytime I see Vucevic on Orlando & Igudola on GSW I think about that Dwight Howard / Andrew Bynum trade JUST 3 + years ago where the Sixers & the Lakers BOTH thought they would be contending for Championships & Orlando & Golden State were After thoughts
Orlando got the best player in Vucevic, GSW got the final piece to their Title puzzle in Igudola & both Phila & L.A.’s franchises were DESTROYED!!!
But I really like Orlando’s young talent – they are really set at almost all 5 positions w/ young players (except PF) – now they just need to grow into a good team & that will take time, but they have a good base…

NBAjunkie81Participantto Denver… my point was that Igudola & Vucevic (Harkless & Afflalo too) were really after thoughts – Everyone thought Howard would bring Rings to the Lakers & Bynum would elevate Phila to the Division title at least…
Phila got Jason Richardson in that whole sequence as well – it looked like such a good deal for them & Both L.A. & Phila were decimated b/c of it….
Iggy went to GSW as part of a 3 team trade w/ Utah & Denver (sing & trade so kind of like free agency) & the Warriors gave up first round picks in 2014 & 2017 plus Richard Jeferson & Brandon Rush for Iggy (Denver) & Kevin Murphy (Utah)
I didn’t remember any of that until you pointed out that it was Denver & not GSW involved in that famous 4 team Bynum / Howard trade… thanks for pointing that & setting me straight – I had no idea…

PulseGlazerParticipantOrlando looks good. They need a bit more shooting and seasoning, but I can see them making a real leap as soon as next year. This year I expect a good home team that really struggles on the road.

HitsterParticipantOrlando now look so much the winner in the D12/Bynum/Iggy trade and they still have picks due from it. Philly were probably major losers but they may not have ended up with Noel and Okafor if the trade hadn’t happened.
Talking of Denver would any sort of deal involving Faried and Vucevic be of interest I wonder. Faried would fit in with the high energy smallball Orlando line up and Denver could use Nurkic and Vucevic as a twin towers combo.

NBAjunkie81Participantat the 2014 NBA draft… Sixers had already drafted Embiid #3 & also held the #10 pick from the Jrue Holiday Trade one year earlier when Phila acquired Noel…
As the #10 pick approached rumors swirled that Phila was going to trade MCW & Draft Payton w/ the #10 pick… Instead og calling their bluff, the Magic – who held the #12 pick – called the Sixers & offered their 2017 first round pick back if they would agree to basically swap the #10 & #12 picks… So Phila drafted Payton at #10 for the Magic & then the Magic took Saric for the Sixers at #12… Afterwards the trade was announced…
This is why I have totally changed my mind about what Phila is doing under Hinkie… This dude started w/ NO players & ONLY 3 first round picks in 5 years when he was hired & he has played Master Class Poker each year at the Draft & scored Extra 1st round picks for the Sixers just by being smart & having Big balls… I am Convinced that they Never wanted Russell & it was another Con to force the teams around them to panic…
When Hinkie was hired he did Not even have a 2015 first round pick & he ends up w/ Okafor… He’s the 2017 first rounder back from Orkando. He fleeces New Orleans by turning broken down PG Jrue Holiday & gets THREE Lottery picks in return…. & the Sacramento pick was best of all getting 2014 #* Lottery pick, swap rights in 2016 & 2017 AND the King’s First round pick for NOTHING!!! He took two Vets off Sacramento’s hands so they could sign Rondo & Belanelli!?!?!? That’s a Crazy trade…

sitlbitoParticipantAll 4 teams involved in the Dwight Howard trade were playoffs teams before the trade, none of them have been to the playoffs after 2013. Has that EVER happened in a trade? Everybody lost. Orlando were the winner of that trade because they didn’t have much to lose, considering Howard wanted to leave. At least they still have Vucevic from that trade, and Fournier was traded for Afflalo, who was a piece of that trade. So at least they still have something. By the way(french homer alert) Fournier with a career high 30 points a few days after knowing he wouldn’t get extended. Skiles seems to be in love with him,he starts him at the 3 and he plays A LOT of minutes. Not many people include him in the young core of the Magic;but he seems to be a central piece.

PulseGlazerParticipantAaron Gordon looks like he could be great, too! I still worry about Elfrid. PGs who can’t shoot have not tended to age well, except for Kidd who learned to shoot.

HitsterParticipantGreat point by NBA Junkie above, Philly owed picks to both Miami and Orlando when Hinkie took over and those picks could have turned out very nice with Philly possibly losing a couple of high draft picks in due course. Hinkie gave up some short term success but managed to get these picks back by a couple of moves. He is basically accumulating assets like when they got a pick from Denver for taking on McGee’s contract. They had cap space so absorbed him into their salaries, brought him out. It helped get them nearer minimum salary cap level and they got an extra pick for it.
These picks may not turn out to be great but if Hinkie has assembled a very nice roster come 2017 and wants a top level player to finish it off, he will have additional assets at his diposal to pull off any trades.
