mikeyvthedonParticipantThe NBA’s Best Pipelines
By: Jonathan TjarksSep 06, 2011 1:00 AM EDTBasketball in America is primarily an urban sport, as most current NBA players grew up in a major metropolitan area. The majority were identified by the time they reach middle school, playing against each other and growing up in the same AAU basketball circles.
As a result, home-town pride is extremely high amongst NBA players, especially among those of the same age cohort. In a summer dominated by the incredibly slow pace of negotiations in the lockout, the most buzzed-about basketball moments have come in exhibition games between players from different cities — the Goodman (Washington DC) vs. Drew (Los Angeles) League showdown, the one-on-one matchup between Kevin Durant (playing for Goodman) and LeBron James (playing on the Carmelo Anthony-led Team Baltimore squad).
So, in a similar vein to our look at which college would win an alumni tournament of current players, here’s a look at which city produces the best NBA players. The transient childhoods of players like Amar’e Stoudemire (six different high schools) and Kobe Bryant (who grew up in Italy and then played in high school near Philadelphia) makes it hard to divide up teams, so only players who spent the majority of their childhood in a major city were counted.
1. Los Angeles: SF Paul Pierce, C Tyson Chandler, PG Russell Westbrook, SG James Harden, PG Jrue Holiday, PG Darren Collison, PG Brandon Jennings, SG Arron Afflalo, SF Trevor Ariza, PG Andre Miller, PF Amir Johnson
In terms of the depth and quality of NBA talent produced, the vast Los Angeles metropolitan area stands head and shoulders above the rest of the country. It attracts players from all over the state and turns them into stars: Los Angeles has big men (Chandler, Johnson), wings (Pierce, Ariza) and a host of point guards that turned UCLA into “PG U” over the last decade. It’s the only city that could field a competitive team of guys who didn’t make the cut — Tayshaun Prince, DeMar DeRozan, Nick Young etc.
2. Dallas: PG Deron Williams, PF Chris Bosh, PF LaMarcus Aldridge, PF Darrell Arthur, SG CJ Miles, PF Kenyon Martin, PF Jason Maxiell
It’s rare for one city to produce two NBA All-Stars — Williams and Bosh — at the prime of their careers. It’s even rarer for both to have graduated high school in the same year — 2002. But the strangest part of all is that neither player was the biggest star on his own high-school team. Bosh played in the shadow of Bryan Hopkins on a Lincoln High squad that won the mythical national championship, while Williams was a less heralded recruit than high school teammate Bracey Wright, who starred at Indiana and was a second-round pick of the Minnesota Timberwolves.
** Full disclosure: As a Dallas native, I saw many of these players grow up first-hand. Down-the-road, watch out for LeBryan Nash (Oklahoma State) and Perry Jones III (Baylor) to continue the DFW pipeline. **
3. Atlanta: C Dwight Howard, PF Josh Smith, C Derrick Favors, PG Lou Williams, PF JJ Hickson
The backbone of this squad comes from the famed ‘03 Atlanta Celtics, arguably the best AAU team ever assembled. It featured three NBA-caliber big men — Howard, Smith and former New York Knick Randolph Morris — as well as Javaris Crittenton in the back-court. As a high school player, witnessing their size and athleticism in person was a humbling and eye-opening experience.
4. Chicago: SG Dwyane Wade, PG Derrick Rose, SG Andre Iguodala, SF Shawn Marion, SG Tony Allen, SF Evan Turner, PG Will Bynum, SG Quentin Richardson
Perhaps it’s not surprising that Chicago produced a generation of great young guards after Michael Jordan dominated the sporting landscape for well over a decade. In many ways, Chicago is the converse of Atlanta, with great play in the back-court but no legitimate front-court players to speak of. They would be unstoppable in an up-and-down pick-up game, but if the tempo was slowed, they’d be unable to control their own backboards.
5. Seattle: SG Jamal Crawford, SG Jason Terry, SF Marvin Williams, SG Rodney Stuckey, SG Brandon Roy, PG Aaron Brooks, C Spencer Hawes, SF Terrence Williams, PG Nate Robinson
A somewhat surprising entry on this list, Seattle has had a thriving hoops scene for most of the last two decades. Its many NBA products have shown a lot of loyalty to their hometown, including staging an exhibition there this summer. It will be interesting to see whether a lack of an NBA team will dry up the city’s pipeline of elite basketball players.
6. Washington DC: SF Kevin Durant, PG Ty Lawson, SF Mike Beasley, PF Pat Patterson, SF Jeff Green, SG Delonte West
Even if you separate the DC/Northern Virginia products from Baltimore (Carmelo Anthony, Rudy Gay), the nation’s capital has become a growing power in the world of amateur basketball. One of the reasons why legendary Maryland coach Gary Williams retired was because of his inability to make inroads with the region’s AAU culture, as the area’s best players — Durant (Texas) and Beasley (Kansas State) — have wound up all over the country in recent years.
7. New York City: PF Lamar Odom, PF Elton Brand, SF Ron Artest, C Roy Hibbert, PF Taj Gibson, PF Charlie Villanueva, PG Kemba Walker, SG Lance Stephenson
The inability of the self-proclaimed “Mecca of Basketball” to produce quality NBA players has puzzled many, even warranting a feature story in the Wall Street Journal. There may be some merit to the idea that the city’s best players are overwhelmed by the hype, with one example being the underwhelming pro career of Sebastian Telfair. But it’s just as likely they aren’t that good to begin with: there aren’t many unathletic 6’0 175 All-Star point guards in the NBA, regardless of where they grew up.
8. Philadelphia: SG Tyreke Evans, SG Richard Hamilton, PF Markieff Morris, PF Marcus Morris, PG Kyle Lowry, PG Jameer Nelson, SG John Salmons
Philadelphia has long had a reputation for producing tough-minded players, and its current crop of NBA products is no exception. Evans and Lowry are two of the most physical guards in the league, while Nelson is one of the few sub-6’0 players to excel in the NBA.
** Just missed the cut: Houston, New Orleans, Baltimore, The North Carolina Research Triangle and Indianapolis. **

Thought it was a pretty interesting article. Not surprised about LA, not sure about Atlanta over Chicago, however (guess it was due to the Atlanta Celtic program being so stacked). New York being ranked 7th seems surprising, it has been a while since New York has produced an All-Star level talent, however (If you bring up Michael Jordan being from Brooklyn, you are pushing it). Melo was actually born in New York, but this article, rightfully, talks about where people were raised. The last All-Star level PG from NY? Stephon Marbury. Past that 1999 Draft Class with Elton Brand, Lamar Odom and Ron Artest (Who were all in the same HS class as well), been a while since NY has tossed in some solid NBA depth. They have a lot of players in the NBA, but from a talent perspective, they really seem to come in 7th.

Bmore_DCParticipantnice post…im not trying to hate at all but to me it seems like Seattle is a little over-rated…they have a lot of players but the quality isnt as good as other cities IMO…
also DC and Baltimore are about 30 minutes apart, where Los Angeles is GIGANTIC…if this list combined BMORE and DC then we would dominate…also Kevin Durant and Beasley are both from Maryland so how does it make sense not to combine the 2??? but the LA list is real legit, so is Dallas and Chi-Town good gawd!

goneParticipantDC and Maryland two totally different places its unfair to combine 3 different regions and say all those players are from DC when they are clearly come from different parts of MD and VA. I have never heard of a player from the tri-state area so why combine DC, MD and, VA. DMV= Department of Motor Vehicles

tuck243ParticipantFirst off, I went to school out there… I promise you 2 people off that list maybe lived in DC… SE, NE, or NW… I know for a fact that KD NEVER lived inside DC… And by taking DMV regardless of the time it takes to get to different places is dumb… If thats the case NYC should take Jersey… L.A. should take the Bay area n LBC… Los Angeles is huge but it only takes 30 min. to get from tip to tip… Plus is all one county… It’s not right and I totally dislike how the DMV try to down play that’s its 3 different places… Its just DC is so small in area mass that Md and Va isnt far away.. Which if you look at a map of the United States Md is right on top of Va… Ish is dumb… If you are from Baltimore be from Baltimore… If you from DC be from DC… If you from PG county be from PG County… If you from Alexandria be from there… You don’t see people from LBC, Oakland, San Deigo repping L.A. Nor will you see people from Jersey rep NY (and they are 15 min apart if that) … I’m sorry I spazzed but I just hated that ish while I was there…

Bmore_DCParticipantIm sorry Tuck but clearly you are a moron…
It only takes 30 mins to drive from tip to tip in Los Angeles??? a place that is bigger than the states of Rhode Island and Deleware combined??? You clearly didnt read my post and went off on some stupid tangent. I dont care if you went to school here or not, but everyone that i know around here reps the DMV…which is DC MARYLAND and VIRGINIA…all i was saying is that if you took the players from the DMV then you would have the best team…and i feel like its a valid argument seeing how small the area is compared to Los Angeles and its surrounding areas…
and YES seattle is overrated…Jamal Crawford is a good 6th man but didnt make the playoffs like his whole career but a couple years ago…Jason Terry is good but again, hes just a 6th man/role player at this point. Marvin Williams = BUST, Rodney Stucky has shown flashes but is un-proven, Aaron Brooks is decent, Hawes hasnt done shit, Brandon Roy is going to have knee issues the rest of his career, Terrance Williams was in the D-League last year (although i do like his game), and Nate Robinson barely played last year. Its not better than New Yorks team IMO

SmooveKRYPTParticipantEven if you combined the DMV, I still think LA is more talented top to bottom. We can go 20 deep of quality NBA starters. That list didn’t even include Baron Davis, Dorrell Wright, DeMar DeRozan, Nick Young, Jordan Hamilton, Tayshaun, Craig Smith, etc.
Melo, KD, & Gay at the top is as good as it gets, but when we’re talking "pipelines" LA tops the list.

Or wasn’t generous enough to give out turkeys and pay yall light bills… The Mayor you guys want back is a CONVICTED felon and was caught with a prositute n smoked crack… Since he can’t be Mayor again yall voted him back into a council seat… LMAO… THEN you tell all the people who move there that D.C., MD, and VA is ONE… LOL… Comedy… If you have no clue what I’m talking about OR you didn’t vote because you not a D.C. RESIDENT then SHUT UP… D.C. is D.C., Maryland is Maryland, Va is Va… You never here a die hard D.C. resident claim DMV… They ALWAYS say something like "I’m from SE., D.C. n say son or jawn"..
As far as the Seattle thing… What other city should be ahead of them? Your beloved DMV area? LOL… I told yall how these folks be living in their own world… BIAS… Len that is…LOL

This is a 100% fact, the only reason people say DMV is because of Wale and he isnt even from DC. Nobody says they are from the New York Metropolitan they say their city. Only MD/VA people claim the DMV. Ive never heard anybody from DC say that.

tuck243ParticipantIt’s unfortunate that he died at a young age, but so has a lot of other young folks… That wasn’t the first time he snorted coke and wasn’t going to be the last if he made it to the league… I wrote an article on how folks from that area hold on to the Len story like he was a GOD or something… The man yall should be honoring is killing this summer and plays for the Thunder… Len Bias wasn’t going to be better than Jordan (That’s all I hear)… And just because the man died doesn’t mean I’m not allowed to speak the truth about him… Get real…

SubZeroParticipantHow is Chicago not #2 in this? It said Dallas is rare because they have 2 All-Stars, Chicago has 4. And I’m still wondering how Amir Johnson got put on the LA list over Baron Davis, DeMar DeRozan and Nick Young

WizardofOzParticipantI disagree with the people basically saying DC has no ties to MD. they most certainly do, especially PG County. a lot of cats from DC live in MD or go to school there, especially in PG County.
I’m not gonna get into that whole DMV ish, but saying that DC and MD basically have no ties? I just don’t agree with that at all. some NBA players from around the area like KD and Lawson rep DC AND MD, not just one or the another. HECK, Ty Lawson was IN my neighborhood last month for a couple of weeks to vist his godbrother, who’s from MD.
I personally think that the whole DC metro area is included in the DMV — Maryland(not including ocean city), NOVA, and DC.

aamir543ParticipantOk Flynt Flossy but those 5 total players over a span of 20 years? We might be in the top 50, but not on this list.
And although Kidd was a superstar, and Rider was a good solid player, and the others haven’t done much yet.

GlenTaylorSucksParticipantI don’t care what all y’all say. Minneapolis’ pipeline is the best. If you want a tall, lumbering, unathletic white guy, look nowhere else but here. Joel Pryzbilla. Kris Humphries. Cole Aldrich. Jon Leuer. I can go on. Lol
