Mr. ChicagoParticipantListening to Jeff Van Gundy (someone who is a very good commentator during NBA games), he frequently brings up players "flopping." He says that the NBA should begin looking back at the tape and fining players.
Here is an article about flops in the NBA: http://content.usatoday.com/communities/gameon/post/2011/05/james-harden-thunder-jeff-van-gundy/1
excerpt: ["ESPN analysts Jeff Van Gundy and Mark Jackson certainly thought so. Van Gundy called flopping a "leaguewide problem" and said, "To me when the league office looks at that, they got to start fining them $10,000 to $15,000 or more." "]
I thought this was aninteresting topic and wanted to see what everyone thought on the flop? Whether there is a place for the art of the flop (inducing a call) or whether it should be a fineable offense in the NBA?

Scottoant93ParticipantEveryone hates floppers, but its just part of the game, honestly there has been so many rules that change how basketball is played. a player touching your arm with a pinkie would considered a foul. Honestly they need to stop trying to control the game so much and call foul only if they feel necessary..I think thats a bigger problem and the cause of flopping(they know they can get calls)

river09ParticipantSome loosening of the rules on the defensive end would be good for the game IMO… I don’t think fines are the answer here…

IndianaBasketballParticipantI’m all for "selling" the call, but I can’t stand flopping. There’s a difference.

bball guyParticipantI like what Indiana said. People sell everything but they go overboard alot too.

Mr. ChicagoParticipantI agree with your point. I think the flopping, not so much the ‘over-selling’ needs to stop. (I am admantely against flopping, and hate when I see a replay of a defender jumping 5 feet backwards after you can clearly see the elbow that ‘supposedley’ hit him, misses by a good 8 inches to a foot).
How do you think the refs/league could ‘police’ that? Do you think it should remain unchanged or should there be fines levied?

llperezas far as reviewing things, the thing that has always irritated the hell out of me is when players vehemently argue with refs and the replays clearly show the ref got it right. I dont mean bang bang calls that could go either way and the player is arguing his point, i mean when a guy hacks someone and then argues about it. I remember sheed doing that and he had one of those crazy ballistic sheed moments and the replays showed he fouled the hell out of the guy right on the fore arm and he ran around with his hands on his head showing up the refs. To me that kinda stuff might be worthy of fines. You lose all credibility with the refs when you do that stuff.

TyroberParticipant@llperez. Its not like the call will EVER change either. It was obvious it was a foul and it is over and done with yet they still feel the need to argue.

BiggysmallsParticipantI agree with Van Gundy wholeheartedly, but its virtually impossible to really fine guys because players would just appeal it everytime and have it reduced or lifted.
Flopping has gotten a bit out of control, though I actually think its gotten better than it was 2 or 3 years ago.
I personally now am getting sick of the whole swiping the ball through immediately into a shot drawing a shooting foul, when seemingly there is no place for the player to even think about shooting. Kevin Durant has really utilized it and I believe they are trying to get that call fixed, but its still tough to do. I dont really think its flopping, but its manipulating officials and I think its gotten kinda bad.
I also think the league has gone to far in trying to manipulate the game to cater to the offense, but offense makes money and nobody really likes watching people miss shots.

NickWayne87Participantand i’ll say what i said then, take away the charge call completely, then they wont have no reason not to play defense like a MAN.

BiggysmallsParticipantThat wouldnt work because if you want to play defense like a MAN, take away all shotblocking because 90% of them come from guys not "manning up" and letting their guy beat them to the hoop.
