Only 25 years old, the countdown towards the end of Roy’s career has officially started…

According to reports, Roy has literally NO mensicus in either knee. The meniscus is what cushions the impact of running and jumping (wear and tear on your bones) on your knees, so Roy is literally bone on bone.

And other than rest and anti-inflammatory medicine to help with the pain (which are bad for your liver), there is nothing that can be done. Microfracture surgery isn’t an option. The whole point of microfracture is to stimulate new growth of articular cartilage (what covers the tips of your bones). Roy doesn’t have anything to cushion his knees, so new articular cartilage would just be worn out before it could even grow.

I can’t see Roy’s career lasting much more than two or three more seasons max. His heart and mind are going to be tested more than ever before because he’s going to be in a lot of pain and have to take medication just to endure it. Pain, swelling and stiffness in both knees are going to be things Roy experiences for the rest of his career.

At one point will he shut it down and start thinking about LIFE after basketball with his kids and family? With no mensicus in either knee, he’s facing serious articular cartilage wear and tear, which will lead to bone deterioration.

Thoughts on Roy and the future of the Blazers? Keep in mind, Blazers former GM Kevin Pritchard, just signed Roy to a max extension last season.

Injuries like this at the age of 25 are never good.  B-Roy is one of my favorite players to watch, but he definitely doesn’t look like he is 100% right now.

This would be the WORST if Roy is out 2-3 seasons down the line.

I hope he can last a little longer, he’s a great player and pretty much the key to Portland. I think even if it starts effecting him this season, he might have to shut it down.

So if Roy ends up being forced to retire in two seasons, does that mean that the Timberwolves didn’t mess up as bad as we all thought when they traded Roy for Foye? Haha. Roy is wayyyy better than Foye, but at least they won’t be paying a retired player for 5 seasons after he’s gone if Roy is as hurt as it sounds…

There are few things I hate more in sports than watching an athlete’s career go up in flames because of injuries while he is still in his prime.

@Indianabasketball, I don’t know much about knee injuries, is it just straight up impossible for him to play long-term with an injury like this? I was just thinking about Dejuan Blair, who has no ACL’s in either knee.

Havin no ACLs is alot different than no meniscus in the knees.  I mean if anything no ACLs only benefits Blair longevity in the future since he wont be tearin them.  Havin no ACLS will not be that detrimental to the rest of his body, but havin no meniscus at the knees could def. cause Roy to wear down faster than nature intended.

Damn this sucks, the dude is one of my favourite players, and he’s so skilled. Honestly, Blazers should look at seriously hampering his minutes until playoffs roll around. Give Fernandez all the time he wants and keep Roy fresh, the Blazers have the talent to get into the playoffs without him playing a whole lot of minutes.

Roy is in a very tough spot.

Once meniscus is gone, it’s gone. There is no surgery or method to get it back. Rest won’t get it back. Medicine won’t get it back. And he’s missing all of his meniscus in both knees, so he’s playing bone on bone. Bone isn’t meant to grind together like this, let alone for an athlete in a sport where running, jumping, planting, pivoting and cutting is everything.

It’ll vary, but he’s going to experience a lot of swelling and pain. He’ll have to get his knees drained a lot. Rest (limited playing time, practice time, etc) will help the pain and swelling somewhat, but this is a very tough situation. They’ll have to manage his situation perfectly to get the max out of what his knees have left. I can’t see his career lasting that much longer… And IF it does, it won’t be anything close to the level he’s played at the last few seasons.

For Blair to be missing ACL’s in both knees and still be able to play, the rest of the structure of his knees (LCL, MCL, PCL, muscles, etc) must be put together very well. While the ligaments serve a different role than the mensicus, I can’t really see Blair’s career lasting all that long either.

Not having ACL’s isn’t that bad the Steelers’ Hines Ward has had no acl’s his entire career since college and he is still going strong to this day, but I haven’t heard of a player with no mensicus

I know he’s made millions and this is just basketball, but I feel for Roy.

Not necesarily because of his NBA career, but for afterwards. My dad lost most of his meniscus in both knees and put A LOT of wear and tear on his bones. He could barely get around when I was growing up, which sucked for my brother and I. And now that he’s older, he REALLY has trouble getting around. He’s had to get knee replacements in both knees. It’s no joke.

Let’s calm down here. 2-3 seasons max? I seriously doubt this. Though, I agree that his career is taking a dip and he isn’t going to be a top-15 player. I don’t know what direction Portland goes. Honestly, I am mad about the current team and am super fraustrated with McMillian’s offense and how there is NEVER  a freaking fastbreak. Hopefully Oden shows something.

I don’t know… Three more seasons is probably slightly on the low side, but I mean… He’s literally missing all of his meniscus in both knees. That’s just crazy. I don’t know how he’ll be able to make it more than three more years. How long will he be willing to take those anti-inflammatory meds just to get through the pain? Those are bad news for your liver.

And without any cushioning, risk for damaging his articular cartilage/bone is extremely high… I don’t know… It doesn’t look good.

One thing is clear… His best days are behind him.

The Timberwolves wouldve probally traded Roy anyways like they trade anyone with any talent that reaches their organization. Plus 1 year of Roy is better then acareer of Foye.

I don’t think Portland is cursed. I just think they have bad management and a poor training staff.

    – Roy had knee injuries before being drafted by the Blazers. He tore his meniscus in high school and then at Washington.

    – Elliot Williams had a knee injury during college that they overlooked.

    – And though I never heard of any knee injuries for Oden, I highly doubt after being drafted by the Blazers, he woke up on the couch and just mysteriously needed microfracture surgery.

They seem to just drop the ball in Portland. When their new GM took Roy’s MRI’s to a specialist, he took a MRI from SIX whole months ago. Why not attain and bring a current MRI? Who knows what could’ve changed the last six months.

Roy is clearly not going to be the cornerstone of a championship team anymore, so where do they Blazers go now? If Oden can get healthy I say they build around him and Aldridge ala Duncan-Robinson Spurs. Fernandez should get the starting nod sooner than expected depending on what Roy does and what the front office does with him, but basically they should just play strong inside and have shooters like Rudy and Batum surrounding them. It really sucks the Blazers never had a healthy run with Roy at the helm and Oden around, but it’s not as bad as losing Len Bias or Drazen Petrovic for that matter before they could really shine.

Also, Blazers need to do what they did with Wes Matthews and buy the Phoenix training staff!

I read somewhere while Oden was still in HS that one of his legs are longer than the other, and that it was a concern. I’m sure the Blazers knew about that.

One of his legs is longer than the other. I can’t remember for sure, but I think he had a minor back issue because of it during the draft.

I heard it wasn’t significant, but maybe that’s playing a part in why his body is misaligned. I read that he wears a custom made shoe sole now to off-set it.

Just reading those first two paragraphs are hard to phathom! I feel so bad for him smh. I thought he had the silkiest  game in the league and I was literally thinking I hope he doesnt get a Penny Hardaway type of career but here we are.

I hope he goes to a contending team or be a factor of a bench so that way he doesn’t put too much strain on it. I think the Blazers should really look at the options available for them and see because he is the heart and soul of that team

Aldridge is not someone I’d build around. He’s not that good IMO.

I tore my left ACL when I was 19 but was able to keep playing fairly regularly after a couple of weeks resting up.  I definitely wasn’t the same, but I could play.  Of course, your ACLs are there for a reason and a year later I twisted my knee just right and obliterated my meniscus.  11 years later, I play ball about twice a week, but every once in a while my knee will swell up like a balloon and I’ll have problems going up the stairs, let alone doing anything athletic.  It sucks and I can say that there is really nothing that can be done about it.  I had surgery and they repaired the ACL with a piece of my hamstring, but they basically just removed the loose pieces of meniscus.

The other thing is that when your knee starts to swell regularly and significantly it’s incredibly hard to keep the muscle in your leg developed like you want.  Once the swelling hits a certain point, muscle development near the swelling pretty much stops.

Wtf is it with Portland and screwed up knees?

Greg Oden – Microfracture on Right Knee, Broken Patella on Left Knee.

Joel Pryzbilla – Ruptured Patella Tendon on Right Knee

Elliot Williams – Dislocated Patella on Right Knee

    Jeff Pendergraph – Torn ACL

    Now Brandon Roy?

    Sh*t’s messed up.

I don’t know, but it is some bizarre bad luck.  I’d be looking pretty closely at the training program.

I don’t know about that he’s improved a lot in the post and he’s a very good shooter too.

He needs to be a better rebounder but the talent is definately there.

Who else are they going to build around Andre Miller, Greg Oden or Batum doubtful any of those guys have the offensive game Aldridge does.

Yikes, that sounds pretty terrible, but you never know with the advances medicine makes.  8 or 9 years ago how many people would have believed you if you told them Grant Hill was a starter and playing meaningful minutes at age 38?

    I don’t know… Roy’s situation is a little different. He doesn’t have a meniscus in either knee. That’s tough.

And though there have been a couple of medical procedures that claim to be be able to replace a meniscus, they seem too risky and there are certain guidelines you have to meet just to qualify for the surgery. I read somewhere that Roy’s knee was arthritic, which could elliminate him from even being a candidate for the surgery. I mean, who knows? Maybe Roy will be the first big time athlete to undergo it. Once upon a time, microfracture surgery was an unknown and considered risky for athletes, but now doctors have started to perfect it.

I hope something can be done for him though. He’s played without a meniscus in his left knee the past three seasons, which is something a lot of people didn’t know about. That’s the reason Roy never accepted those invites with Team USA. He’s always had to go through pain and swelling, but that pain and swelling went up a ton of notches this season. Your knee can only take that grinding for so long. I wouldn’t be surprised if his articular cartilage is damaged.

And last season he had the rest of his right meniscus removed. Eventually his right knee will break down too. It just doesn’t look too good for him. That’s why I posted I thought he’d only last another three seasons max.

Yeah, thats rough and really a shame for such a good young player.  I hope something can be done medically to help him, but you also have to wonder if he tries to push it the next three years or opt to focus on his quality of life later on.
