jaycee24ParticipantI hate being that guy but so be it. I’m the biggest Pistons fan and I feel the need to right the ship in Detroit and turn the franchise around with the use of the NBA trade machine. Josh Smith absolutely has to go and I think I’ve finally found a move that could work for both parties
Detroit gets: Amare Stoudemire Andrea Bargnani Iman Shumpert
New York gets: Josh Smith Charlie Villanueva Rodney Stuckey
Why this works for the Knicks: New York loses Amar’e’s huge contract, Andrea’s huge contract and replace them with 2 expiring contracts in Rodney Stuckey and Charlie V. New York had also been shopping Iman Shumpert who’s struggled to shoot this year but may find a significant role in Detroit he seems to be able to hold down in New York. You now replace him with Stuckey who’s been scoring at will this year who you can plug in off the bench when either J.R. is chucking bricks or if you want to keep a scorer out there while you rest Melo. Quintessential 6th Man. They also take off the 2 million dollar bonus Amare is scheduled to receive next season. You also now have a guy who can provide what New York’s been missing in the way of a defensive presence and a little added toughness at the 4. He can also log starter minutes and I think Smith would actually fit in very well next to Melo. If NY were to make this happen they would shave 5 million in salary this year. After re-signing Melo to a max deal they’d still have 12.6 million in cap space leaving them with more than enough money to chase after a solid free agent (Isiah Thomas, Eric Bledsoe, Kyle Lowry) If New York made that happen think they’d have no problem signing capable veterans to take a minimum deal. Just for kicks imagine next year a lineup of Lowry TH jr. Carmelo J-Smoove and Tyson with Felton Pablo J.R. and Metta on the bench. Obviously pretty weak up front as far as their reserves but like I said maybe a good veteran would head to New York to chase a ring in the weak Eastern conference.
Why this works for the Pistons: Detroit still can use their amnesty. You look at this trade and think why in the world would the Pistons consider taking on Amare and trading away their 2 expiring contracts in the process. The answer would be because they can still use their amnesty clause on Amare. Losing Smith and Stuckey would obviously hurt Detroit’s chances for the playoffs but I think any Pistons fan would agree that at this point I’m rooting against them so they finally can rid themselves of Smith and get their top 8 protected first round pick. In essence, Stuckey and Smith (well maybe not Smith) are luxuries Detroit can no longer afford. So if Detroit were to make this deal they would be adding 5 million in this years payroll, however that would be erased next season by amnestying Stoudemire’s contract. The Pistons would have close to 16 million in space this summer giving them more than enough money to offer to Monroe. If they choose to not bring back Chauncey or if he hangs it up that’d another 2.5 million to work with giving Detroit plenty of options this offseason to provide much needed bench help in the way of a point guard and/or a capable back up wing. You also get a young 2 in Shumpert to audition in their starting rotation. If Shumpert performed well enough for Detroit to hang onto him moving forward I believe they could get him at a very fair price in the summer after next. You also get a guy like Bargnani you can compliment Drummond very well off the bench and at least provide 15-20 minutes for you at the 4 and 5. Not to mention his 11.5 million salary is off the books after next year as well as Bynum (if they keep him) Jerebko Datome and Kyle Singler (who I hope they re-sign). So rather than spending 41 million more dollars for 3 more years to watch Smith struggle next to Drummond and Monroe, Detroit could actually gain a young prospect at a position of need who could fit in with their future, basically have the same amount of cap space this summer, gain a much needed back up big man, and only have to pay these guys for the rest of this year and the 2014-15 season. Seems like the best option for Detroit unless that Charlotte rumor is legit.
I put a lot of time into this idea so I’d really like to know what everybody thinks about this deal

Mr. ChicagoParticipantDetroit can not trade for Amare and then use the amnesty provision on him.

Mr. ChicagoParticipantThat is correct. Only the team that signed a player may amnesty him. (As well as other provisions that must be met under the rule).

DolanCareParticipantWhile this trade proposal is bad, I should hope the knicks accept it if it is presented to them. I know Josh Smith has a long-term contract. But the Knicks are just sitting on their asses with STAT and Bargs on the books for the next two seasons.

SwatLakeCityParticipantThe main reason why Detroit needs to trade either Smoove or Monroe is because of the myriad of big men that they have upfront. Right now they have Drummond, Monroe and Smoove all in the starting lineup. We all know that Smoove is more of a four than three, but Monroe plays the four, and Smoove really likes being a three for some odd reason. So while I agree that Smoove needs to go, he needs to go in a deal where Detroit is able to decrease the number of big men they have. So they can either put Monroe and Drummond together or Smoove and Drummond together. With the trade you have proposed Detroit would have even more big men then when they started. They would have Drummond, Monroe, Bargs, and Amare. Thats five big men that all deserve starters minutes. Okay some of you don’t think that Amare deserves starters minutes, well then you have four. That’s almost their entire starting lineup. Something’s gotta give. The main reason why Detroit is struggling is because of the incompetent starting bigmen of Drummond, Monroe, and Smoove. Get them down to two and I guarantee Detroit will start to win more.

TheArtistPaysthePriceParticipantIf a team had Boozer and Bargs, I wouldn’t trade them for Amare let alone Josh Smith. Amare Stoudamire’s trade value is equal to a root canal and an uncurable STD up until the last day of the trade deadline next year. Giving up anything other those those two options is a bad deal for Amare.
