who are the top five, 1 on 1 players in your opinion. guys you would never want to challenge a 1 on 1 in. it can be NBA(old school) and COLLEGE. and give reasons. (im talking guards, not centers who you will obviously say will back you down)

    mine are

    1) kobe bryant (no need to explain)

    2) earl boykins (speed kills, and it would kill me)

    3) jamal crawford (when hes hot, he doesnt miss. to go along with the most underrated crossover in the history of the NBA)

    4) derrick rose (shakes and bakes, ythen follows with a crossover, and then if he doesnt get by you he can still take contact and finish

    5) Austin rivers (his crossover is pretty mean)

Paul Pierce:  herky-jerky moves, good shooter, thinks he is best player on planet

Harold Minor:  if you have to ask, you never watched him play at USC

    Joe Johnson:  straight up balla

Dirk:  Unblockable shot, and can shoot from any where, any angle

Tim Hardaway:  Can will himself to make any shot.

In one on one you need to play defense and i suspect the one on one players would play someone at the same position and Earl Boykins would probably get posted up easaly by all the points guards taller then 6’1. For Sf’s i would bet on Carmelo to win a one on one tourny because he has so much moves that he can score on.

Definitely some nice players on everybodys list!!!  Reading through everyones answers…and theres one person missing….I mean he wasn’t the quickest player every to play….wasn’t the strongest person ever to play….wasn’t the tallest person ever to play…didn’t have the "best" jump shot ever to play….didn’t have the nicest handles ever to play…and he even might lose to a game of one-on-one to some of the previous mentioned names…but…something tells me he would do pretty decent in a 1 v 1 atmosphere considering his overall game and mindset…..I am talking about Michael Jordan!!!

As far as legends go (other than Michael Jordan and centers): Pete Maravich, Earl Monroe, George Gervin, Larry Bird, Isiah Thomas

Young guys: Derrick Rose, Kevin Durant, John Wall.

Older guys: Dirk, Kobe, Manu Ginobili, Dwayne Wade (he would STILL get all the calls! lol), and Kobe.

Other guys who are crafty and can score, even if they aren’t the fastest: Paul Pierce (veteran). James Harden (young guy).

Interesting how no one picked LeBron James.

It goes down to Monta and D-Rose. They are basically identicle in size, both 6’3 and around 185, and both shoot about 45% from the field.  D-rose may be the better scorer, but I think Monta can score at will too in a 1 on 1 matchup, so its a toss up.  Ima go D-rose, simply because hes the MVP for a reason and I can’t side against him.

Steve Nash would be good too (maybe Nash from a few years back though). A great combination of awesome shooting touch,
deep range, great ball handling, floaters, off-balance shots, and other creative shots.

Derrick Rose would have to play some pretty darn good defense because he only shoots 6% from the field when LBJ is guarding him.  LeBron would dominate a 1-1 tourny.

How is Carmelo Anthony not getting more love in this discussion? He’s excellent on the block, out on the floor with his jab step, he can pull up and hit the jump shot, and he can put the ball on the floor and attack the basket … offensively he may be the most total package in the league today

I will give you a pick and then some other notables or guys I would say but have been picked already…

    # 1 a one on one master who has dribble moves, post moves and an assortment of trick shots.  has got to be Jordan, he was a master of creating separation, off the bounce or with the fade plus he had bank shots that would make me wanna fight him!  In a one on one game I just dont see how you can stop him with all his fakes and his feathery touch.  Kobe and Gervin.

    # 2 anybody with a sick hesitation dribble, but for kicks I will go with Deron Williams here, his handle is ridiculous.  Iverson (although I prob wouldve called carry on him a lot, lol), Jamal Crawford (the dumbest handles I think I have ever seen on a player of his height or otherwise for that matter), D-Rose rarely do you see guys whith is speed, quickness, and handles.

    # 3 anybody who can shoot the lights out, if they got the ball 1st, I would prob never get it back….going with Bird here.  He would piss me off.  Dell Curry, Ray Allen, Dirk.

4# anybody with a hellacious step back jumper, gonna give Brandon Roy some love here…that step back with the reverse between the legs was a sick azz move of his.   Wade and Pierce are masters of the step back also.

5# college guys that would give me fits…Ryan Harrow, boy is just dumb nice with the rock.  Watch for Josiah Turner.

Its so hard to pick whos the best 1 v 1 players so im going to cheat and pick a couple:

Guys that are no longer in the league- MJ (enough said), Bernard King (if you ever saw him play, you know why hes here), Scottie Pippen (lock down defender, sneaky good offensive game), AI (dude could score at will and good luck staying in front of him, dont know if he has good enough d though and his size is an issue as well), and Gary Payton (lock down defender, handles, swag, and with his scoring ability he’d be real tuff to beat plus you gotta deal with all his shit talking)

Small guys in the league-Monta Ellis (so many moves and counter moves, killer mid range game, crazy quick first step, his defense would be a problem though) 2007 Baron Davis (the best combo of speed and strength for a small guy, swag x1,000,000, handles, excellent post game for a guard, rebounding and d, hes another person that’d be super tuff to beat) DRose (hed be able to get to the hole all day with his speed and strength, handles, explosive athlethicism, his shooting and defense would be a major issue) and Deron Williams (killer crossover, nice stroke from mid range and further, his strength would be hard to handle with him going to the hole or posting up and he plays good d)

other guys in the league-Bron(best combo of strength/speed/size period, handles, rebounding, lock down defender, plus he likse to yak on people faces, his shooting would be only downfall), Vince Carter in the Toronto days(mind blowing athleticism, really quick first step, he could shoot from anywhere, his jumping ability would be a major problem for people in 1 v1, smooth handle, his only weakness would be his defense) Tmac in Orlando days (everything thing I just said about Vince Carter except hes 3 inches taller) Dwade (probally the best at getting to the hole, really creative offensive game, he has amazing first step to go along with his moves and counter moves, plays really good d, his shooting would be a problem though) Kobe(no need to explain the mamba especially the Kobe right after Shaq left when he went into scoring overdrive) JR Smith (really good crossover, but his handle can be really sloppy at times, when hes shooting well he cant miss from anywhere, good size and speed, great athleticism and he can get to the hole at will whenever he not jacking up 25 footers, hes got some major weaknesses in his defense and shot slection, but hed be really hard to beat when he hot) and Dirk (dudes 7 feet tall with an excellent handle, can shoot over anyone anywhere on the floor, fadeaway is unstoppable, excellent moves and knows how to create space for his shot, herky jerky going to the hole but he makes em, his only weakness would be stopping all of the guys i mentioned before him lol and his medicore rebounding)

And I gotta throw Len Bias in the mix because he was a beast and had the complete package as a player (RIP)

I have no idea who would win out of all these guys, but I wouldnt bet against MJ ever

Melo has to rank 2nd after Kobe. Melo might have the most complete offensive game in the NBA. He can handle the ball, shoot it, he’s quick, strong and powerful not to mention athletic. He may not play alot of defense but i highly doubt there 4 or 5 guys in the league more offensively talented than this guy.

Not only can he get to the rim 1 on 1 at will, but he can actually defend other guys one on one.  Look at how he defended D-Rose in the conference finals.  Monta Ellis, on the other hand, was statistically the worst isolation defender in the league, although he did always defend the opponents to guard.

Where is LBJ…. to think LBJ wouldn’t dominate 1v1 with his physical and athletic attributes alone, has not stepped foot on a basketball court, you combine his size, his defense, his ability to recover once beaten off the dribble, ability to finish through contact, good handles and an improved jumper he beats anyone on this list hands down not named MJ or Kobe. He would post Monta, AI, Hardaway or Rose up to the likes of a shaq nesterovic rematch. It pains me i even have to mention this due to the fact that i hate the dude too.

I certainly do not think he is the best but Chris Douglas-Roberts said a couple years ago that he has never lost a one on one game. He said D Rose got really close to beating him but never did.
