Outside shooting in the NBA as we all know is an important aspect of the game, and in some ways it is very important where NBA teams have a 3 point specialist on their roster. I think people underrate the importance of being a very good perimeter shooter. I have noticed a lot of the prospects in this years draft especially at the guard position lack the ability to shoot from the outside well, and a lot of the easy layups they got in college just based on pure speed and quickness won’t come in the NBA. Also, looking at the 2 highest rated PG’s in the draft Kyrie Irving and Brandon Knight, both are very reliable outside shooters.

    Thoughts??

Isn’t Kemba Walker & Tyler Honeycutt decent perimeter shooters?

Kemba is an average 3 pt shooter, but he has such a will to win where if a 3 needs to be made he’ll take it and make it.

Honeycutt is a good 3 pt shooter. I am high on him on the next level b/c of his size and ability to handle the ball as well. Though, Honeycutt needs to take care of the ball better on the next level.

And die by the three. Its a lovely shot, and crucial at times, but its not very reliable. I think most people will be hoping for points inside the paint along with 10-15 footers for higher percentages of a shot. Its very good thing to be able to shoot from the outside well, but not exactly something people will undoubtably be looking at unless they absolutely need a shooter.

I think teams need about 3 or 4 guys who can hit a pretty good amount of 3’s to keep the other team honest.

It may not be as consistent as mid range jump shooting, but it gives a team more points.  A team would rather have a possession end with an uncontested three than an uncontested 15 footer, all other factors equal.  You can live and die by any shot if you rely on it.  A team ideally wants to get shots at the rim and draw fouls, but a team needs to have outside threats to space the floor and give it a more efficient jumper.  There is a reason why 3 pt. specialists are so common in the NBA.  Also, in today’s NBA, as knicksfan7 stated, a 3 pt. shot helps any individual player get penetration and get to the rim.  There are not many players in Rajon Rondo’s mold in the NBA.

Every team needs knock down three point shooters, to keep the defense and honest and to impact the game. Michael Jordan has 6 rings, but he would not have them without guys like B.J Armstrong, John Paxon, Jud Buchler, Craig Hodges, Steve Kerr, and Even Kukoc could Knock Down Threes. Most Cinderella Teams have players that can shoot the three ball well. Thats why there are so many upsets during March Madness.

Coming from a horrible 3 point shooting team, I would like to see the Jazz draft a 3 point shooter for their second pick. Jimmer or Klay Thompson would do nicely.

The 3 point shot is an absolute necessity in this NBA.
