I like to use the Tankathon .com’s ‘Sim Lottery’ to get a snapshot of different scenarios.

They’re almost never like you’d expect.

For example, in my most recent lottery

Milwaukee Bucks got the first pick, Followed by Portland and Minnessota. This is despite relatively unlikely odds.

Philly got the 4th and 5th picks, while the Lakers got nothing!

Have a go yourself, and report your ‘Sim Lottery’ Order. You can even go into detail about what those teams should do.

    So.Much.Fun!

I think Utah is the 8th seed right now.

I think they need a wild card lottery pick, where each NBA team has a 3.33% chance of getting it.

I would make that the 5th pick.

Expand from 3 to 4 the number of picks selected by lottery balls.

Then the unlucky bad team falls to 6.

At 5, every team in the league has a shot at a really, really good player.

It wouldn’t punish mediocre teams for making the playoffs.  It would also discourage tanking a bit, since THE WORST team in the league could fall all the way to 6.  And, at 6, you are just as likely to end up with a guy like Shane Battier (probably even an above average pick at 6) as you are a Larry Bird (one of the best picks ever of course, and THE BEST at 6).
