I noticed that in the Exhibiton game vs Brazil over the weekend, they were playing NBA rules and not FIBA rules. Will USA playing with the Fiba rules make a difference, considering their opponents are more familiar.

    A) It will have a negative impact

    B) No Change in performace

    C) who care? Only the domestic league is significant.

I don’t blame Americans if they think C is the answer, but the rest of the world needs FIBA cos our domestic leagues aren’t as strong. I feel the rules changes are a key reason why it’s still competitive.

The refs are super strict on travelling violations. US team always gets a couple turnovers from travelling each game. The other main one is loose goaltending calls. European Big-Men are really crafty at tipping away shots above the cylinder. Even on Free Throws. NBA player’s aren’t so good at this.

I’d say it’s about a 5 point swing against the US team. The rest of the world just needs another 25 more points from somewhere else to catch up.

I think FIBA rules will have an impact, but it’s not about traveling or the goaltending thing, at least not that much, it is more about how some of those rules change the way the game is played. Specifically, the shorter 3 point line distance and the lack of a defensive 3 seconds rule change a lot, both on what kind of plays are more effective on offense and most of all how yo play defense, especially on the weak side. I don’t know if that would be enough for other teams to beat Team Usa, but at least it’s something american players have to deal with and get used to and it gives some kind of edge to international teams. One thing to note is that Team Usa doesn’t have the same talent they had during 2012 and 2008 Olympics and still they had some close games even with those much better selections. I wouldn’t be shocked if Team Usa doesn’t win the gold medal, I mean, there are some very good teams, filled with a few all star or at least good Nba starters, they might not have the same talent Team USA has, but it’s not that big of a gap and other teams have a better grasp of FIBA ball, they know each other better because on average they have played much more together, they’ve had a longer preparation, Spain will have the crowd to help them and so on.
