Sam Smith is an NBA writer in Chicago, and his work can be found on Bulls.com. He often writes about all NBA-related news and notes though, and on Monday, he wrote something that might send Raptors followers into the sports fan’s equivalent of an orgasm, given that we’ve already dealt with Jonas Valanciunas’ birthday, David Aldridge praising us and DeMar DeRozan being included on the U.S. select team all within the last day-and-a-half.

Towards the bottom of his latest column, Smith notes that Steve Nash is expected to move on after the Suns make a “limited offer.” Where it gets insanely interesting for us in Canada is:

Many believe Nash instead of chasing a title with a contender for a lesser salary will go back to Canada and the Raptors for a three-year deal and help bring their young players along.

(Shout out to @CanBallReport for making me aware of this via my twitter timeline)

I have no idea how connected Sam Smith is, how much of this is opinion, how much of this is insider knowledge or who exactly comprises this “many” that he alludes to. And of course, it’s one paragraph in one column written by one writer, but he’s a writer within NBA.com’s branch of websites, and he specifically threw out “three years,” which is intriguing.

It’s 1:30 in the morning right now, so I’ll come back to break down my thoughts on whether this would actually be a good move basketball wise sometime later on Tuesday. Hopefully by then, we’ll have seen a little more about this report and will know how legit it is.

Until then, enjoy your Canadian wet dreams.

As a bias Raptors’ fan I think this is an amazing move for the squad. Raptors are projected to draft Kendall Marshall on the site’s mock draft and Steve Nash can mentor young players and his experience is invaluable. He still has some game in him.

But, at the same time I do believe Nash wants to solidify his place in the Hall of Fame and I do believe he will want to wing a ring (possibly with the Heat).

But what do you guys think? Where will Nash go?

He’s going to a contender, no doubt.

Yea I van understand why he would consider going to the Raptors. If he could bring their young players around and help develop them, making the only Canadien team in the NBA relevant this is somthing that has to be in the back of his mind. But when all is said and done he will be going to a contnended…a chance to win a chamionship is more important that a chance to make the raptors releveant.

It would make more sense if he would come back being part of the Raptors organization, say like Larry Bird in Indiana?

Nash to Indiana still makes the most  sense, or even Portland if they can use the Nets pick to trade for a big.

To be honest, I’d love this. If he can teach Bayless how to be a better PG while he’s there, and be a leader for the Raptors they could very well be in the playoffs next season. Bargnani, Ed Davis, Valanciunas, DeRozan, Bayless in addition to whoever they get in the draft would be a great supporting cast for Nash, and he’d really be giving back to Canadian basketball.

If the Raptors are smart they’ll front-load Nash’s contract so he won’t eat into their cap in his final year but will still get the money he wants.

I hope he signs with a contender, has a good run or two at a title and then joins the Raptor front office once he retires.

Not sure if this was posted earlier but Nash was hired to be the GM of the national team:

    All good points,

But Nash has never seem as a championship chaser. I mean HE COULD HAVE demanded a trade from Phoenix but he stayed loyal and classy to the organization. I think it could both ways. With that being said, maybe he wants to come home and win his Canadian fans over agan (in a different way). He could mentor the younger players and IMO, he’d make the team A LOT better even though he is 38 years old.

I’m a raptors fan, but I really wouldn’t want Nash to come here. I would much rather see Nash competing for a championship than toiling away in Toronto.

Obviously I’d love to have him as a veteran prescence and mentor to young players… but enough of his career has been wasted in phoenix the last couple years. I’d rather see him get a championship.

If that Nash to pacers is true that would set them up for some championship n in not even a fan. That would be great for all them assets they have over there
