Though free agency in the NBA doesn’t begin until July 1, one of the first clues in the San Antonio Spurs’ offseason plan to get younger, add shooting, and depth around Kawhi Leonard and LaMarcus Aldridge might already be taking place, as EuroHoops.net wrote Sunday that the Spurs intend to offer Latvian forward Davis Bertans a minimum contract offer this summer.

Bertans’ NBA draft rights were secured by San Antonio back in 2011, when he was picked by the Indiana Pacers in the second round at 42, and he was included in the trade between George Hill and Leonard.

After suffering numerous leg injuries early in his professional career, Bertans finished as one of Laboral Kutxa’s key weapons on offense, where he started many of their games, and he displayed the ability to play the 3 or the 4 on both sides of the ball with his 6’10” frame.

Bertans, just 23, played in 15 total Euroleague games this season, where he displayed as average of 7.9 points, while shooting 47.4% from 3-point range, in just 20 minutes of play per game.

If the contract were indeed to be for the NBA veteran minimum of $543,471 for a player with 0 years experience like Bertans, then financially, the signing wouldn’t have a significant impact on the Spurs’ salary situation. For now, though, it’ll be more of a wait-and-see mode to view if Bertans’ camp and the Spurs do have mutual interest in making such a deal happen.

The EuroHoops.net article also mentioned Bertans still has one more year on his contract with Laboral, so if both parties agreed (he and the Spurs), San Antonio would have to initiate a buyout agreement.

Thats good news for him.  I remember reading about him during the 2011 draft. Been following him ever since. A couple writers compared him to Dirk Nowitzki.  I loved his potential and its good to see he was able to get healthy.  He can rise up,  square up and drain shots over anyone.  Not Nowitzki but definitely a long wing with a super sweet stroke.  Even with four and a half fingers.

I don’t think he has come around to being the multi-dimensional scorer some projected him as being, but he has taken three-quarters of his shots from behind the arc and made 44 percent of them (in ACB and Euroleague games). He certainly can merit being given a look, and maybe a year or two to see if he can adapt to the NBA. The only sad part is if the 76ers start trying that he might not get the opportunity to have the Boban games.

I’ve been wondering what happened to this kid. I remember he was friends with Biyombo during the draft process, then I never heard of him again. Hope he makes it.
