Mr. HookShotParticipantIn an earlier post I mentioned the Spurs as a destination for free agents, with them having some cap space which they can use to bring in maybe a younger player. The question is however to what extent the Spurs are actually willing to bring in new players via free agency, as that is generally not their strategy. Last year they actually had cap space but used in to extend their own players (Splitter, Manu) instead of spending it on a younger player with more potential (Josh Smith was mentioned in rumors). Apparently, the Spurs value continuity more than bringing in a player with more potential. When looking at the free agents the Spurs signed over the past years, their most remarkable signings have been Bruce Bowen, Avery Johnson, and Robert Horry.
The question is do you guys see the Spurs sign a major free agent this year (they have around $8 million in cap space) or next year (when only Splitter is under contract thus far)? If so, what kind of player would they want to sign, or more precisly who do you see the Spurs signing? Rumors mention P. Gasol, or the Spurs signing any of their international prospects.

ExumInfernoParticipantMaybe Bonner is back at league minimum, Diaw gets a slight raise, Mills leaves for more money. Maybe they can sign Barbosa if Mills goes.
For the bigger money signing, someone to take minutes from Duncan would help to keep Duncan fresh for the playoffs and maybe to play more years. P Gasol would be perfect for them, he has lots of options for what he does though. Kris Humphries or Elton Brand might be other options for the Spurs. Brand now is a bit like McDyess was when he signed with the Spurs, getting to the end but still able to help in limited minutes.
Maybe the Spurs could sign Jimmer, to use in the role they used to have for Steve Kerr.

The GoatParticipantI would be surprised if Mills leaves. I think he’d stay for less money, but understandable for him to leave if its way to big a pay day to turn down. He’s improved for sure. I think our Aussie national team may be able to turn a few heads in the near future with any luck. To go with Bogut and Mills, we have Dante Exum, Ben Simmons and (fingers crossed) Thon Maker, with current and ex NBA role players to support them (Matt Dellavedova, Aaron Baynes, David Anderson).

KawagicParticipantDuncan is coming back, same with Manu. They’ve both already said that. Boris should hopefully come back for about the same amount of $$$ (he’s already had a big payday in years past) . I pray to God we dont keep Bonner. Mills is the only one the scares me. Can’t blame him, he has to get paid.
Rumors of David Bertans or Livio Jean-Charles coming over might be true but they’re just rumors as of right now.
I would personally like to see the Spurs get some more depth at SF/stretch 4 position, Kyle Anderson would be sweet but I don’t know if I see him falling that far. I also like the thought of Luol Deng but question how much money he will demand.
Back to the original question….no I don’t see the Spurs making a big splash in the FA market. I think they take care of thier own folks first (Mills/Diaw) and make a small splash, kinda like they did last year (signing Marco). No need to make a huge splash, they just dominated the NBA this past year. If it aint broke, don’t fix it!

Memphis MadnessParticipantIf Patty Mills leaves, I could see Jimmer as a replacement. Jimmer is a premier shooter, and I think he could play off the ball too.
Miami has some old vets that might want to take a look at San Antonio. Rashard Lewis is a 6’10 stretch four who can shoot the 3. If Matt Bonner leaves he could take that spot, but Lewis is more of a 4 man. Lewis can also (probably?) play some 3 behind Kawhi Leonard. Or, you can go for some Kawhi/Rashard small ball lineups where Lewis jacks 3’s, and Kawhi rebounds and defends the better forward.
If Birdman doesn’t resign in Miami, he could be a solid fourth big for San Antonio. Good rim protector and rebounder when healthy who can also get some garbage buckets (putbacks and dunks). If he gets healthy and loses some weight he could be a perfect option for them. At worst, he would be a 3rd/4th string center who could battle (and foul) guys like Ibaka, Z Bo, Marc Gasol, Blake, DeAndre, Roy Hibbert, Bosh, and Noah for a few minutes here and there.
Memphis has some solid free agents too that they could look at. Ed Davis is a good player on the pick and roll. He is a solid athlete with some length who can rebound, block some shots, and dunk. He’s not that smooth, but when he gets it going he can get a lot done. He is also a good pick and roll player. Ed Davis plays better in more minutes, so if the Spurs wanted to bring Splitter and Diaw off the bench next season, Davis could start next to Tim Duncan to give the Spurs a bit more athleticism on the front line.
… Beno Udrih was a good fill in for the Grizzlies last year. He can’t defend anyone but he can shoot and run some offense. You can either have him as a third stringer behind TP and Corey Joseph if Patty Mills doesn’t resign, or as an extra 2 guard behind Danny, Manu, and Marco. He used to play for the Spurs too, so that is another thing.
I really think that Mike Miller would be a great fit in San Antonio if he doesn’t resign in Memphis or go back to Miami. He would give the Spurs another playmaker. He can pass and handle the ball and even rebound from either wing spot. And, he is one heck of a shooter. If guys set picks for him and if they run some plays for him he could be DEADLY from 3 point range. He is also a decent guy on the fast break. The Spurs could go with an ultra-small, great shooting/passing lineup of Tony Parker, Mills (if he stays), Mike Miller at the 3, Kawhi Leonard, and Boris Diaw. Leonard would score, crash the boards, and guard the other team’s best player, with MM actually acting as a stretch four who just stands outside and shoots 3’s while grabbing a few boards, and basically hiding on defense. Basically, Mike Miller could play with any other four Spurs players and fit in either as a spot up shooter, poor man’s Manu creating his own offense and offense for others, or as a small ball stretch four to stretch the floor in speedier lineups.
If the Spurs want to outsmart themselves, I could see them taking a flyer on Greg Oden. If Oden can get (even a bit) healthy he would be a heck of a fit next to Tim Duncan. Oden’s baseline is a guy who gives Duncan fits in practice and a guy to hide on Kendrick Perkins when the Spurs face the Thunder. He could also help against his former teams: the up and coming Blazers as well as the Heat.
The guys that make the most sense are Mike Miller and Ed Davis. The "name guys" to look at would be Jimmer and Greg Oden. Beno Udrih is a "safe" free agent signing that is familiar with the Spurs and would be a decent replacement if Patty Mills signs somewhere else. Birdman would be a blend as a guy who would make some sense for the Spurs, is a "name" guy, and a pretty safe pick — at the right price.

Memphis MadnessParticipantWes Johnson would give the Spurs youthful depth on the wing behind Kawhi Leonard. He can give them athleticism, energy, and defense an extra guy to throw at Durant, LeBron, and those guys.

thparadoxParticipantDiaw will certainly get a new contract.
Bonner might get a new contract, but he wasn’t very useful in the playoffs these past couple years. Regardless, his salary would be minimal.
I think Patty Mills is likely to leave. I’m sure he wants to stay, but he’s an excellent player and the Knicks are likely to throw decent money at him.
Cory Joseph is a good player, but I think they’d also look for another PG because the Spurs really run their point guards very hard. You can check the sportvu stats. Those guys sprint around the court like crazy. They would be looking for players who can shoot the 3 and hustle on defense as well. Perhaps Aaron Brooks? Udrih? Chalmers if the Heat disintegrate? Jordan Farmar? Jerryd Bayless? I’m not sure who would be the best fit, but there are plenty of options. I like Jordan Farmar a lot.
