BasketBalAllanParticipantHonestly I have little experience watching those two play but I do know this; teams with high expectations and no money will almost always get a great deal on talented players, while pretty much anyone who has money will be forced (either by themselves or by the player) to give up the $$.

aivsdirkParticipantI agree with you blatche is far better but because of the Celtics trade blatche knew if he wanted to stay he would have to accept less money. spurs needed a big man guaranteed to them with Duncan about to retire. they overpayed but accomplished their goal

valentineI’m truly shocked that splitter got that much from the spurs, while Blatche, who is twice the player he is, got $1.4M. If I were the spurs, I would have offered Blatche 3 years at 5m per to come play next to Duncan.
I would bet that Blatche would be an upgrade at Center for the Thunder, Bobactas,Hawks, Celtics and a couple other teams.
Give the guy 35 min a night and he’ll give you 15-16 pts with 7-9 rebs.

DolanCareParticipantBlatche’s small offer is a testament to the lack of trust he has garnered from NBA managements. He has good scoring and rebounding abilities, but he’s been branded as a liability towards winning. He never played over 21 min a game in the Bulls series because of his consistent mental errors and horrendous defense.
He’s a good option off of the bench if you want scoring from the 4-5 spot, otherwise he’ll hurt you. Every time I watch him play offenses attack him knowing that he’ll give minimum resistance.
Also even though he has some nice offensive moves, he’s pretty much just a mid range shooter now. He’s not good enough to be effective low-block scorer.
So while Blatche has a pretty game, he’s a 7th man who you can’t trust for a good team.

jlm4988ParticipantI agree with you that if Splitter is a $9 million a year player, then Blatche is not worth $1.4 mil. But there are other factors at play over here. Besides the point that the previous commenter brought up, Blatche is still being paid a fairly large salary from the Wizards. He is already getting paid, and he is comfortable with the Nets and his situation, so he gave them a discount.
In terms of the players themselves, I think Splitter is better, especially for the Spurs. He is a better defender (Blatche is a poor defender) and he already knows the Spurs system, and has chemistry with their ball handlers on pick and rolls. That being said it seems like an overpay, but there were rumors that other teams were preparing to give him that much. I would definitely rather have Blatche at his salary, but I still don’t think it can be considered a bad contract. Especially if you think he has room for improvement.

WetalkinboutpracticeParticipantYou guys have to remeber that although Blatche accepted a small salary from the nets he is still owed money from the Wizards.
That amnesty check means he’ll probably pull a total salary somewhere in the neighborhood of 8.5million for the season. While playing for what looks like one of the top teams in the east, with the opportunity to learn from one of the best in KG.

jjbutler73ParticipantBlatche makes the same salary where ever he plays, it’s only a matter of who pays what share. He took the minimum from Brooklyn to help them build a contender.

SiggyParticipantI’d rather have Splitter.
Blatche is the type of player that the Spurs do a good job of staying away from.0- Posted on: Wed, 07/03/2013 - 8:56am #812163
aivsdirkParticipantregardless of personality splitter is pretty inconsistent from game to game as he showed in the playoffs blatche can play on any team and be productive. besides when blatche becomes a free agent next year and he shows interest in signing with spurs they would sign him. gives them a big man version of manu never know what you gonna get in mental blurps

the microwaveParticipantfellas the wizards are still paying Blatche some serious coin.. Add up his 1.4 from the nets, and what the wiz are still paying him LOL..
“The Wizards would have owed Blatche $7,794,921 this season had they not used the amnesty clause on him. Ultimately, they will have to write him a check for that total minus the offset amount. If Blatche’s deal is for exactly $1.4 million dollars, here’s how we determine what Ted Leonsis must pay Blatche:
BLATCHE WIZ SALARY: $7,794,921
OFFSET AMOUNT: $1.4 million – $788,872 (minimum salary for 1-year veteran) / 2 = $305,564
TED LEONSIS OWES BLATCHE…: $7,489,357
All in all, Blatche makes just under $8.9 million total”.

NCarmean18ParticipantBlatche really liked playing for Brooklyn last year, and he did rather well. With KG and Pierce coming over, he instantly viewed Brooklyn as a championship contending team. That right there will automatically make someone like Blatche willing to sign a smaller deal, but the thing that iced his return to Brooklyn was the fact that he will still be payed a lot of money from his amnesty from the Washington Wizards. With the sum of that added to his Brooklyn contract and his chances at winning an NBA Championship, this ultimately helped land Blatche back in Brooklyn for another go at it.

Scrooge McDuckParticipantSpitter was a restricted FA offered $36m/4yr deal by the blazers. The Spurs were forced to match that in order to keep him.

B-ball fanParticipantTiago Splitter is at least twice the player Blatche is. If you are playing Blatche big minutes, don’t expect much. He is a bad defender who is a black hole on offense and takes terrible shots. At his best, he is nothing special and at his worst, he is one of the worst players in the entire NBA. He plays with less passion and intensity than any player in the league. Splitter can at least set screens and play solid defense. I think the Spurs overpaid for him, but he is better than Blatche, at least if your goal is winning basketball games.

fcb206ParticipantI was honestly surprised the Spurs resigned Splitter for so much money. Under the new CBA, teams must be extra careful how much they pay role players, and for how long. Seems to me they could have gotten 75-80% of what Splitter gives them for probably 30-50% of the price tag. Splitter is in his late 20’s. He is what he is at this point. Hard to believe he’s making $2 million less than Marc Gasol. Yuck.
