antiwork3000ParticipantI know coaches and owners don’t want to change anything regarding the hack-a-Shaq situation but its so boring watching the last 3 minutes play out for 30+ minutes. I’m proposing a simple solution. Like the one and one.. allow a third free throw if player makes the second free throw. This increases the chances of the hacked team getting 2 pts per hack and thus cancelling out the other teams posession.
If you look at bad free throw shooters most of them are still in the 60% range. If they make 2 out of 3 then other teams will think twice about doing the hack a shaq. Even worse would be somehow the player makes all three free throws causing the hack a shaq strategy to backfire and stop being a thing.
all in favor say aye

Memphis MadnessParticipantGood idea.
They used to have 2 out of 3 on shooting fouls.

daggers818ParticipantI’m not in favor of adding more free throws to the game. My simple suggestion would be to allow an off-the-ball intentional foul to be optional for the player to shoot or take out of bounds with a new shot clock. Seems like that would kill the hack strategy right away. No more fouling, no more free throws, encourage good play on the floor and not at the foul line.

XYRYXParticipantTotally agree.
I don’t want to imagine either what guys like Harden or Jamal Crawford are going to do to bend the rules and go for 12+ FTA per game…
This could actually beeing even more annoing to watch…

MopgrassParticipantIt makes more sense to let them take one free throw AND take the ball out of bounds. Players making decisions will slow things down. Also, I’m not sure your idea of just taking the ball out would ever be chosen by a team. The average player shoots about 45%. Add to that the possibility of turnovers, subtract the likeliness of a put back from an offensive rebound, and it’s still worth it for a 45% FT (or a bit less) shooter to shoot free throws. Therefor, it wouldn’t change anything.
One free throw and the ball out of bounds might still slow the game down a little, occasionally. However, it wouldn’t often be used as a tactic.

ZachAttackParticipantI like OP idea… daggers818, it will probably take longer to decide whether or not you want free throws or the ball out of bounds. You should just have a set rule for everything instead of players deciding. It would make more sense to me.

llperezI don’t have a problem, I enjoy seeing teams use the strategy. If the strategy works, then the offensive team will sub out the bad shooter and problem solved. If it doesn’t work and the guy makes the ft’s then the defensive team will eventually stop. As I a fan, I understand and appreciate the strategy and enjoy the chess match involved. Plus I hate the idea of changing rules to accommodate guys who lack basic skills for the simple fact it makes the fans happier.

antiwork3000ParticipantI also appreciate the late game strategy but the constant subbing is also part of the thing I dislike.

very few 60% ft shooters are ever hack on purpose. 60% should keep u safe from opposing teams.

antiwork3000ParticipantThis is mostly true but I think the rule would still deter intentional hacks. However small the chance there is still a chance of a three point play.

thetrademachineryParticipantit makes sense if a foul is made outside the 3 pt line to be 3 shots.

Rip255I’ve got a better idea. Every time a team fouls after the 7th foul, an automatic 2 pts is awarded.

holefillers1ParticipantWhat if all the players who can’t hit free throws take extra time to improve their %. I know, I know, it’s a way-out-there concept.

daggers818ParticipantI really do believe they practice to hit their free throws. Just saw a posting where DeAndre Jordan didn’t leave the gym until me MADE 1000 free throws. I mean he’s trying, but it’s just not in his game to be a decent shooter so why penalize him for that?
I’ll be provocative and ask the forum to consider the "fairness" of making poor free-throw shooters make free-throws with the intentional foul. I’m not rying to make an excuse, but the reality is that the vast majority are centers whose game is nearly always near the basket, thus shooting from distance is not really their game — fundamental or not. It’s a bit akin to making someone like Chris Paul earn his foul points by making him reverse slam — a fairly "fundamental" play for a center but not so much for small guard. These are not plays where the player is even involved in the play at all. Whether my idea is right or not, it just needs to change as the strategy has become a joke.

sitlbitoParticipantThe biggest problem to me,at least it looks like,is not that they don’t work on it NOW. But that they didn’t practice it back in high school,or didn’t really care back then, because they were dunking on everyone.

The QParticipantThe National Federation for High School rules has this solved with one single rule.
And the NBA claims they can’t figure out a good solution.
Gimme a break.
