There was a report that just came out that the Jazz would be willing to pay anywhere between $9m and $13m a year for Solomon Hill and that apparently the market for him is fertile because he can guard 3 positions…

This guy averaged 4.2 ppg, 2.8 rpg and shot 32.4% from three this past season.

If you would have ever told me that a player of that caliber would go for $10m+ a year, I’d have called you a rotten liar

He started the season not good as he needed to fit himself to Paul George return and change role, He still sevicble as rotation player on a good team, should keep improve as a 3 and D type that can drive a little and also playing some small ball 4 thanks to his strong body, remind be PJ Tucker, i thing he’s worth MLE money…

I think he’s a good 11th man on a roster and mediocre at almost every aspect of the game

someone will over pay. That’s why there’s good franchises and bad franchises.

I personally am going to miss Solomon Hill as a Pacers fan. At the time it still seemed a little ludicrous to decline the 2.3 million option for next season from his rookie deal with the cap going up, but the Pacers were dissappointed with how he performed in Summer League last summer. He didn’t fit into the team plans because with their transition to a different style of play led to Budinger getting minutes and fell out of the rotation as a result. Judging Solomon Hill off those stats does a disservice to what he brought to the floor defensively where he was +41 in net points while playing the 4 spot. especially in the 2nd half and then when his offensive game started to show improvement shooting 19-46 from three after the all-star break and in one game vs Milwaukee he broke out for 25 points with 7-11 from three you could see growth in his offensive game where it never before seemed evident, then he carried that over to the Toronto series shooting 11-19 from 3 and while the 7.7 points in that series doesn’t look real impressive he did that on 4.4 shots per game. He always was a standout on ball defender, and Vogel was comfortable using him on Durant and LeBron at times. Does $9-13 million sound like alot of money sure, but you will have to get used to it with this new cap (rising even more next year) and Solomon Hill offers plenty more to the table then just stats. That value range on the old cap is most likely 6-9 million and with his upside at 25 years old I think it is a worthy gamble for a team especially someone like Utah where he would be their best wing defender with upside from the 3. But to each their own.

Very nice analysis from someone who obviously saw him more times than many of us. While I think he is a very solid player and agree with you especially on his defensive value, I was absolutely shocked when I saw the 9-13 mio range on Hoopshype. I mean he is 25 years old and still can and will grow into a better player and I know some teams like the Jazz who are not the favorites to land many good free agents need to overspend a little bit but Ibaka for example was payed 12.25 last year and has a lot more to offer than Hill and while Ibaka might and will demand more on his next contract, there absolutely no way I would pay Hill something close to 10 mio a year, no matter what the cap is going to be.

The Thunder signed Singler to a 4 year 20 mio dollar deal last summer I believe and he just had the worst individual season if ever seen from a Thunder player. I now with a rising cap you can hide a contract like that better then before but this are exactly the kind of contracts that can cripple a franchise. A new team is always a risk also for the player not only for the team and if things don’t work out well, you just don’t play and end up being heavily overpaid on a long contract that nobody wants to trade for. Ben Gordon and Charlie Vs contracts crippled the Pistons for years when the Pistons gambled on them. I Hill really gets close to 10 mio a year every half decen player will ask for the max and players like Hood for example who I really like will end up being wastly overpaid like Joe Johnson was for years and will hurt their teams more than help even if they play well. I don’t really doubt some teams will hand out some idiotic contracts this summer but I also believe some teams will look very stupid doing this. While I really like Mike Conley, I think he will be on one of the very worst contracts going forward when he gets his max deal somewhere and paying 9-13 mio for someone was hasn’t done anything won’t help at all moving forward. t

Solomon Hill played really well towards the end of the season, and during their series against the raptors. His defensive versatility and his improvement with 3pt shooting makes him an attractive 3 & D player…..and you know how the league loves 3 & D lol

How does he compare with Moe Harkless? He is coming off his rookie deal and is a RFA. He can guard 1-4 and he played well in the playoffs. I wonder what offers he will get.

It is kind of funny how much getting a three point shot is worth in the NBA. If you are a good to great defender and can hit the three you go from making 5 or 6 million like tony allen to making 15 or 16 million a year in the new cap. If Moe could hit the three he would easily get 15 million a year, but since he can’t he will probably get 6 to 8 million a year, not bad but it is still a pretty big difference.

I see people using the "3 and D" phrase with Hill. Is he a good 3 point shooter though? He shot 32% from 3 last year and 32.7 percent the year before on 2.5 attempts. That’s a decent enough sample size for me to pause on the "3 and D" label. Someone said his post all-star percentages were very good…what changed and will it continue or was it a mirage?

If he’s a defensive stopper, I guess that 9-12 mil isn’t offensive, but is he a guy that can start on a good team? Is a guy that is going to be an offensive liability and a guy that the opposition will hide their best players on? If so, I’d be worried about paying him.
