One of the great coaches/ teachers of the game. He was able to coach and develop some of the great players in NBA history (Malone, Stockton). It’s a shame he never got the championship ring he deserved. Congratulations on a long and successful career coach.

He met with Kevin O’Connor after the game against the Bulls and he’s been doing this for a long time. He definitely needs time to himself after all he has done for the Jazz and the league. Great coach and wish him nothing than the best.

Supposedly last night after the game, Sloan had a 35 minute post game locker speech. I heard Sloan usually has quick speeches and goes right to the media, but he missed his media interview yesterday. Maybe a little foreshadowing. I would have liked to be in that locker room last night, maybe it was a farewell speech to his players.

I can’t believe he didn’t get a coach of the year ever. Maybe the NBA will make it up to him with a lifetime achievement award or soemthing…

I agree with Quincey…its obvious Williams has no interest in his own team any more, and its hard to stay in contention for a title, and continue to win games when your marquee player is not being a leader.

I don’t like Deron Williams. I mean, he’s a great player, but I don’t think he’s a great leader or someone who gets the best out of his teammates.

I just had a strange feeling that the Jazz wouldn’t be great chemistry wise this season after watching Williams blast Hayward on the court. I’ve paid close attention to Williams since then and I just haven’t liked his body language/facial expressions, etc. He’s a d*ck head.

I think this has something to do with Sloan retiring.

Sloan sees the window has closed, he knows all about closed windows, Im sure the only thing driving him is a Championship and now that its out of site hes just gonna relax and enjoy hes payolla, and family.

See you in the Deron Williams to New York/Los Angeles thread….

crazy, 23 years with the same team. I always thought he should have won a coach of the year award, especially in 2003-04. That season he had what was to me hands down one of the worst rosters in the league and still went 42-40.

Check out this roster and tell me how many coaches would have finished with a winning record(listed in order of ppg):

    1 Andrei Kirilenko
    2 Matt Harpring
    3 Gordan Giricek
    4 Carlos Arroyo
    5 DeShawn Stevenson
    6 Raja Bell
    7 Raul Lopez
    8 Greg Ostertag
    9 Jarron Collins
    10 Mo Williams
    11 Sasha Pavlovic
    12 Mikki Moore
    13 Ben Handlogten
    14 Tom Gugliotta
    15 Curtis Borchardt
    16 Paul Grant
    17 Michael Ruffin
    18 Keon Clark

I mean, didn’t he JUST sign an extension? Something had to happen… It isn’t like Sloan to quit. I wonder what happened?

Funny how quick people are too change up on Deron Williams. Its like the banwagon crashed caught on fire exploded and it wasnt registered and was stolen so everyone is darting away form the scene of the crime. You awill all be held responsible lol. Imo he was never the best PG in the league aside from hen Paul was injured, only because Paul was injured. Today he isnt…and now that Sloan is leaving you see the truth? Dispicable lol.

An era finally comes to an end. Sad day, but had to happen eventually. Jazz needed big help or it seemed they would never get out of their current slump. (This whole year has just been a disaster. You wouldn’t know from the record, but as of last month you could tell that something had gone wrong.) Sometimes change is a good thing. I think Tyronne Corbin will step and coach the Jazz for the rest of the season and if he does well enough could become the full time coach.

Wouldn’t it be cool though if John Stockton came down from Spokane and coached them? Be awesome but I doubt it would happen. The Jazz would have to move to Seattle in order for Stockton to even consider coaching them. Corbin should be a good coach. Hope this helps change the Jazz’s sad season so far.

I was waiting for someone to say this. He wouldn’t give up on his team just because they aren’t playing too well. He always used to say in interviews that he couldn’t see himself retiring because he wouldn’t have anything else to do.

I just hope there aren’t any serious health problems with him or anyone in his family that caused him to retire.

This was not Dwill’s fault, on the contrary. We all knew too much pressure was being placed upon his shoulders and so naturally he’s just reacting to all that pressure. He hates losing, so he does everything he can to win. He knows he has too much pressure on himself, but can’t relieve it anyway. Not his fault. Nor is it Sloan’s. Sloan is retiring because he realizes that the Jazz need a new direction in order to get them somewhere. A trade won’t do it because its just one move and the Jazz need several. Especially a second option that can take alot of that pressure off of Dwill. The Jazz need a whole new culture a new direction. And he (sloan) can’t instill this new direction cuz its not his personality not his way of coaching. It wouldn’t if he tried to instill it because the players would still try to play the way Sloan wants them to play. His ways are old and the Jazz need to move on completely. No one’s falut. Like I said before this was bound to happen sometime. This may just be the move that convinces Dwill to stay. This may just be the move that turns the Jazz’s fortunes around. Just what they need.

Actually…it is Deron Williams fault rumor wise.

Word is: he wouldn’t have stayed if Sloan didn’t step down. At least, that’s what people are saying. When I mean people, I’m saying people on twitter AND Jazz beat writers.

Just hope it is not health related.

This guy could ball back in the day too.  Chicago fans still remember him and "Stormin" Norm Van Leer (RIP) as a very effective and tough backcourt for the Bulls.

Whats wrong wit Jazz fans, horrible season?  You guys arent the Lakers, you should be glad youre even in the Playoffs in the West let alone still competing for division champs. In a couple of years youll look back on this season and say, it wasnt that horrible after all.

The question now is who takes over? I think atleast for now Ty Corbin would be the interim head coach. Who knows maybe a younger coach with more enthusiasm can get more energy out of the Jazz.

Can you believe only a few weeks ago..This team was the league’s darling and proclaimed ”Comeback Kids”….Everyone was saying they could give the Lakers a hard time in the playoffs…

They’ve been playing inconsistent the past few weeks..Every since Sloan had a heated argument with the GM..About the time time D-Will ‘s played slowed..Jefferson wasnt guarding anyone..They werent getting any scoring bunch off the bench…And i guess Sloan had enuff after having another heated argument with the GM last night…Reports say Sloan hasnt been happy for some time now…

I didn’t like that kind of talk before, but now it seems much more realistic.

Despite what people are saying, I think D-Will is a great leader and a good teammate. I also think he had a great admiration for Jerry Sloan and without him I don’t see him staying in Utah.

It’s time to rebuild around Ronnie Price and Andrei Kirilenko.

    Looks like I was wrong.

"After a 23-season Hall-of-Fame run as coach of the Utah Jazz, Jerry Sloan abruptly resigned his job on Thursday.

Sloan, 68, had agreed to a one-year contract extension in the past week but things publicly turned late Wednesday after a long meeting with Jazz general manager Kevin O’Connor following the team’s loss to the Chicago Bulls in Salt Lake City. Sloan and his longtime assistant, Phil Johnson, resigned together on Thursday. The Jazz planned a 5 p.m. ET news conference to officially make the announcement.

Sloan’s relationship with point guard Deron Williams had grown progressively worse over the course of the season, league sources said, and the coach had tired of dealing with the team’s best player. The frustration escalated on Wednesday night when Sloan and Williams clashed in the locker room at halftime.

“He decided right there in halftime that he was done,” a league source told Yahoo! Sports. “He felt like ownership was listening more to Williams than they were to him anymore. He was done.”

One source said Sloan had become tired of Williams “blaming everything on everyone else.” Still, Williams, who can become a free agent in the summer of 2012, has remained the Jazz’s best and most consistent player after the departure of several key teammates. Williams has always had a reputation for wanting to win badly and being a strong leader.

Assistant coach Ty Corbin, who is expected to be a candidate for other head-coaching jobs next offseason, is believed to be the heir apparent. His agent, Steve Kauffman, was still waiting to hear from Jazz officials on Thursday afternoon about the naming of Corbin as the interim coach."

Jefferson has obviously hurt the team in a lot of ways.

It’s funny, I KNEW that signing him in the offseason would be a disaster.

The state of the Utah Jazz just went from shaky to screwed.

It sucks to see my favorite player have this kinda attitude. He’s the best player and the floor leader out their. The team goes how he does. And to hear that he can’t even listen to one of the most respected coaches in the game. Thats more than a little rediculous.

I dont see how they are screwed? Screwed in my eyes would be the lottery. And thats were we would be without Jefferson this year. We were lucky to even be able to get him. Chicago was nice enough to give us the trade exception when Boozer left. And we traded for him not signed him.

I haven’t jumped from the bandwagon, i still think he is one of the best PG in the league but like everything else with me you have to continue to prove it and he hasn’t lately. Just watching him you can see he has given up and preparing for his great escape. Don’t be surprised if this turns into a Vince Carter toronto situation.

And i don’t think this move will get DWill to stay. Those close to him have been saying that he is set on leaving Utah and he keeps mentioning he’s glad he only signed a 3 year extension.

They are far from screwed. They still have alot of talent on the team. There main focus should be changing Deron’s mind and making some trades since they do have players that other teams want.

I think from a front office point of view, you usually side with the player over the coach (especially if it’s a player of Deron’s caliber), but there a few coachs in the league you side with first, and Sloan is definitely one of them.

A little piece of me just died. Jerry Sloan has been one of the constant sources of awesomeness in my life for many years. They just don’t make coaches, or human beings for that matter, like him any more – old school, humble and refuses to take any shit.

Respect to Phil Johnson as well. That’s a type of loyalty you don’t see much these days.

I’m going to wait for the rumors to stop flying and the full truth to come out to find out who’s fault this is and who I need to despise as much as Yoko Ono.

Phil Johnson won the Coach of the Year award in the 1974-75 season coaching the Kansas City-Omaha Kings.

So, who’s the new NBA coach most likely to beat a lazy player’s ass? Scott Skiles?

Was on ESPN radio in Chicago yesterday.  It sounds like he  has a lot of energy left, but is 70+ and no way he comes back.  To put things in perspective, he said he remembered watching Joe Paterno (yes- coach of the Penn State Football Team) play quarterback in High School.  Joe’s brother was the fullback.

So, if D-Will got Sloan fired, who is he going to pick to be the head coach.  Bring back Lou "Doo" Hensen!

His system made the Utah Jazz the best passing, most efficient team in the NBA over the past 4 or 5 seasons. His win record speaks for itself. How can you say his system doesn’t work?

NBA.com says he will be replaced by Corbin, and they say he will be their permanent head coach, not just the interim label.

    http://www.nba.com/2011/news/02/10/sloan-breaking/?ls=iref:nbahpt2

To answer Landshark, everytime I see Tom Thibodeau in an interview, he scares the Asian out of me, also SVG is never smiling, and I would have said Avery Johnson too, but he ain’t doing to get Brook to rebound. I remember he used to cuss a lot of players out in Dallas.

We’re pretty much done for on the D-Will front.

Even if he had nothing to do with Jerry leaving, the Utah Jazz fans (who have had nothing but unwavering support for Williams thus far) will blame him for this and give him hell.

I doubt management trades him, although I think that’s the best option right now.

I love Tyrone Corbin, but the franchise is in serious trouble.

"Deron’s gone. There’s a zero percent chance he stays in Utah if his legacy is Jerry’s departure."
