In my opinion, I haven’t seen a big who is the real deal like Skal in a while. He has made impressive strides in developing his game and body, and his overall game is just special. Everything he does he just doing it at a higher level, literally. He just looks like he is always elevated over his opponents at all times, whether it’s his jumpshot or post moves, or on the defensive end and he’s protecting the rim or closing out on jumpshots. Look at Kobe and MJ, when they do a fadeaway, when they stop and pop, or they attack the rim, they are just elevated over every other player on the court. I am not saying that Skal plays like MJ or Kobe, or he’ll be that good, but him being a big and the way he makes plays with his elevation is going to take him a long way. Maybe he is not NBA ready now, but the foundation is there, the skills, the hunger to improve, and the motor is there.

In five years when you talk about the best bigs in the game, it’s going to be Anthony Davis and Skal at the top.

I’d even go so far as to say pure strength is a somewhat over-rated attribute in the NBA. For every strong guy that dominates, there’s skinny guys that dominate too.

        There’s Lebron James….and there’s Kevin Durant

        There’s Russell Westbrook…and there’s Steph Curry

        There’s DeAndre Jordan…and there’s Dirk Nowitzki.

        There’s Shaq, and there’s Kareem.

True, I would not say Deandre is a dominant player though LOL. Also bigs these days arent particularly very strong anyways, if a team can get a way with having Harrison Barnes playing PF and win a championship, Skal is no way going to be a liability.

Just because a player may be somewhat skinny doesn’t mean he isn’t strong. Stephen Curry deadlifts 400 lbs.

Something that really impresses me is how much he’s improved over the last 2 years with being sidelined by a back injury as a junior and playing on an intramural level (no exaggeration) team as a senior. I’m anxious to see what he can do with better coaching and being surrounded by better players every day in practice.

That’s actually what makes me confident in him the most. The breakthrough that guys like Curry, Westbrook, AD, Durant etc. you can already see a similar blossom in what’s happening to Skal. Yeah and not being bias when I say this but Kentucky gets a lot out of their bigs. Penny Hardaway thinks he got what it takes!

If skal bulks up to 230 by the end of his freshman year he could very well be a star in the NBA he’s a legit talent with lots of skill for a young guy I agree that his work ethic and improvements in the past couple of years are impressive he really wants to be the best and he’s willing to put in the work so if his biggest weakness is his lack of strength I don’t think anyone needs to tell him to hit the weights he seems like the first to arrive last to leave the gym type so my best guess is that he’ll polish his skills and bulk up

Not a fan of DeMarcus tbh. If things go right he’ll be in the 2nd tier behind Skal and AD. Lack of shot blocking and desire to win is why I pull away from boogie.

One of the most fluid 7 footers ive ever seen. Im not worried about his weight, Today’s NBA lacks real true Center so his lack of strength shouldnt be an issue, and he will get stronger and bigger by the way.

If he develops properly, he could be the best 2 way Center we have seen since Tim Duncan in his prime.

Completely agree, no Shaq’s in this era, and Skal is a PF anyways. Skal and AD next Garnett vs Duncan.

I’d like to know where you guys are coming up with this stuff.

He didn’t play HS ball…except for a fake team at a fake school….So I know it’s not based on that.

He hasn’t played in any international tournaments….So I know it’s not based on that.

He wasn’t eligible to play in the McDonalds All-American game….So I know it’s not based on that.

But he was the best big-man at the Nike Hoops Summit. Matched up against Maker (12mths younger) and the US team had next to no big-man talent on the roster.

How are you guys gonna tell me he’s the next Tim Duncan and Anthony Davis’s #1 Rival when you’ve never seen him play a single competitive match? Give me a break…

All you have to go by is the positive reviews that scouts gave him based on 2 show-case games.

I’d rather see someone play against actual competition before calling them the next Tim Duncan.

RYD actuallt played against good competition, he played in the jordan brand classic too. Matched up with Karl Anthony-Towns also.I have seen him play a competitive match. Just because RYD doesn’t exist doesn’t mean he never played anyone lol

Skai is hard player for me to rate right now. I’ve only seen highlights and read reports. All I had on Jabari Parker was highlights and reports. I didn’t think much of him until I watched an actual game. I’m sure that’s why I’m not picking up on why people make a big deal of Skai. If you just go by footage, he does look fluid, with decent post moves (without some needed strength), a great mid range jumper, and he’s reasonably athletic. He doesn’t strike me as a shotblocker and I don’t think he compares, in any way, to Anthony Davis. He looks like a lottery pick, but I’m trying to get used to the idea of him being a top 3 pick. I’m sure I’ll see him in a game and jump on board, but I love Ben Simmons, Brandon Ingram, and Jaylen Brown (who, for some reason, is controversial).

Yeah, another thing is that Skal (who does indeed look fluid) is only 4 mths younger than KAT. I’m taking KAT of the 2, based upon larger sample size to judge.

Brown has probably the best combination of strength & explosiveness at the wing spot…and I think he’ll be a good scorer in the Mitch Richmond mould (Slightly taller, but Richmond is on record as being one of the strongest wing players in his era).

If he averaged 22ppg in the NBA and went #3 in the draft…I wouldn’t be surprised. I think he has good defensive potential, but not sure about playmaking potential. He’s just been so physically dominant against High School competition that it’s hard to know how skilled he actually is.

Skal just came from Haiti tho he wasn’t getting the coaching KAT was getting his whole life lol. Skal still has unlimited potential cause we don’t know how much he’s going to learn from actually coaching. I know Embiid has been injured but you should think of what kind of prospect Embiid became and try to get the same vibe for Skal, who actually got a great 3-ball

Disagree about how you can’t compare him to AD—

"Skal is in the same mold of Marcus Camby and Anthony Davis because he went from 6-2 to 6-11 and he has guard skills," Calipari said.

Skal got 6 Blocks in the hoop summit too.

but if you haven’t watched him play it’s understandable you can’t buy it yet. Suggest you watch the hoop summit at least

I went to a few of his games for Reach Your Dream. He was awesome against Oak Hill, literally facing triple teams dropped 33 (13-20) shooting. He scored in a variety of ways from everywhere on the court.

Rip, you recently made threads how he’s not even close to Simmons. Now you’re implying you haven’t seen enough of him?

Simmons not having a jumper, not a defined position, and the fact he has a lot of similarities to once high school superstud, Kyle Anderson, justifies in my opinion why Skal is the better, surer prospect. Doesn’t mean Simmons won’t be a superstar but he definitely has a decent amount of flaws.

        Exactly what I’m saying.

I’ve seen as much as I possibly can…and it’s not enough. Footage is limited, and its mostly old, or in games that don’t mean anything.

I’m on record saying Simmons is going to be a top 3 player in the NBA and better than Wiggins. I’m sticking with that.

If I see Skal put up an AD like Freshman season, I’ll jump on your bandwagon. I’ll even have another look at the Oak Hill game. In the meantime….I’m looking at Dragan Bender footage and seeing someone with more talent than Labissiere.

So you made this thread comparing a player you have seen and a player you haven’t seen, trying to convince others who is better based on limited footage? You are struggling to understand how there’s even a conversation for #1 in 2016, it’s clearly Simmons and there’s not a player even close, and it’s utterly ridiculous to think Skal is better is the conclusion you came up with limited footage?

A difference exists between having never seen……and not seeing enough of to take with the #1 pick considering the talent already at the top of the board.

I liked the inclusion of the link to my post. The purpose of that thread was to highlight how impressive Simmons was as opposed to anyone else in the class. I had Skal #3 in my mock draft in a thread yesterday.

Take all my posts with a pinch of salt my Pistol Toting friend, I post for entertainment reasons first in a tone that is aimed to generate discussion (right or wrong)…., and definitely don’t consider myself even an amatuer scout. You’ll soon notice in almost all of my posts theres an extreme level of hype, exaggeration, hyperbole and outlandish claims if proven wrong…such as

            – Wearing a tutu if Nerlens Noel got any DPOY votes (which he did)

            – Wearing a Margo Dydek jersey to pickup games – (lots of blocks that day)

            – Asking my Barber for a Gordon Hayward haircut if Exum isn’t the Most Improved Player next year.

And the latest inclusion in my exagerrated claims list is…

If Skal Labissiere is a first team All American – I’ll write to his grandmother asking her to put an Ancient Haitian Voodoo curse on me that prevents these fingers from ever typing a bad word about him again.

Its no problem. It just peeves me when people compare players they haven’t seen. I think you will be impressed when you get to catch a game one of his games.

Skal and Jaylen Brown are overrated slightly, but not as overrated as Newman. The Duncan, AD, and Garnett comparisons for Skal are delusional. He’s a good prospect, but come on…

I actually like Newman. I see aggression, confidence, crafty footwork and soft touch that gives him the ability to score at any level. I also saw great Leadership & takeover instincts at the FIBA U17 tournament.

I feel like he’s got the same feel for scoring the ball as Ben Gordon, with Reggie Jackson’s slashing ability. The kinda guy that you live-and-die by. Of course…if he turns into a top-tier shooter, his value increases significantly.

Well, I guess it’s a matter of perspective. If we are talking about a top 10 pick, impact NBA starter, then yes Newman is really really overrated. If you are talking about an instant offense guy in the mold of a Ben Gordon, then yeah I can roll with that. What people are missing are his measurables. Huge red flag, and more important than a lot of people think. It’s not that you can’t be successful with short arms and average athleticism, it’s just that you won’t be elite…

I’m pretty sure the sure the whole Golden State Warriors team has debunked that theory. Thompson, Green, and the MVP Currybhave been hearing that all their lives.

Yeah, I also think Newman will jump up the boards, not go down. Jaylen Brown is a very devicive player. We used to overrate athletes by a lot. We caught on. However, now when we see a guard or SF with athleticism, we assume they’re just an athlete. Jaylen Brown is not just an athlete, he’s not just strong. He’s skilled at getting to the basket, has a great touch using the backboard, and has floaters and close-range jumpers. He’s an elite offensive weapon. He has decent form and he’ll eventually be able to knock it down from outside, probably consistently. What’s not to like?

I can’t believe what I’m reading.. I’m starting to think his Skals family is posting stuff on this site. I think he’s gonna be a great college player, but I don’t think he will be a superstar at the NBA level.. I just don’t think his game will translate into the NBA.. He’s gonna end up a better version of Channing fyre

Crazy to think Anthony Davis averaged 4.7 blocks per game in Kentucky as a young freshman.

The amazing thing is that when you watch footage of his NCAA season, most of his blocks were on outside jumpers (which are significantly harder to block than weakside shots around the hoop).

Really ? Are you talking about Ben Simmons ? I’m going to be honest I don’t believe it. He looks to be a solid good athlete, but 41 vert for him is pushing it unless a see legit proof or test.

Have you ever watched any of Montverde Academy’s games. You can find them online its not hard. At least the HS All-star games. It’s not in question that Simmons is a great athlete. Even if his verticle is 35 inches that is a very good verticle for a 6’10 230 pound teenager. I think Kawhis verticle was in the low 30’s so sometimes like you said a positive test doesn’t translate in Russell’s case but sometimes it doesn’t translate in Leonard’s case. In Simmons case I think it will translate well at the combine and on the court. Such an underrated athlete its ridiculous.

Doesn’t look like its 41. Maybe 35-37. Can’t really trust the LSU staffs reports on their main marketing piece. LSU’s ’25 is coming’ campaign is being launched this year behind Ben Simmons and the recruiing class in hopes they can once again be a perennial powerhouse in college basketball and start winning recruiting classes. They will be pulling every trick possible to bring media attention their way

Simmons – jumpshot Is he a Small Forward or Power Forward ??

Skal – strength and being able to put weight

Brown – jumpshot hitting it consistently, 6’5 ?? Small F

    forward Tweener ??

2016 NBA draft has some potential but not a clear number #1 prospect… Sleeper (Brandon Ingram)

2 upperclassmen like Hayes and Jackson from Wisconsin & Notre Dame might not have ideal size, but both should be good NBA players.

Jaylen’s problem is he relies on his strength heavily in his game, and we really don’t know how far that will take him or if he can adjust. Ingram is no more than a role player and he even knows it. Jamal Murray is my front runner for the 3rd pick behind Skal and Ben, the comparisons to Brandon Roy are pretty accurate.

How are we calling these 17 year old prospects overrated or not? They’ve barely even step foot in a collegiate gym yet. Lets ease up and start calling people overrated once they’ve gotten a couple collegiate games under their belt.
