In my opinion, I see a lot of things about him that confuse me on here.

He has a game where he has 28/17 & there’s a post asking is he really a franchise changer.

People are trying to dismiss him as a franchise guy because they don’t think he’s exactly Magic or LeBron…well, nobody is Magic or LeBron. They’re tha 2nd & 3rd best perimeter players ever. Neither had jumpers either until later in their careers.

I understand the questions about his jumper, but I’m not going to say he can’t shoot. I just see that he won’t shoot long jumpers. With all of the guys that are in tha league jacking up shots that they know they can’t make, its kind of refreshing that a guy won’t take a bad shot. I thought that was a good thing.

Another thing is the Odom thing. Odom never had a right hand & was never this good…EVER. Not close. He could handle & pass for a big, but Ben is different. He dribbles & plays with his head up like a real PG. He has the offense ran through him.

I’m going to go back to what I said before the beginning of the season….look at this stat line right here..

    21.6 pts, 7.9 rebs, 6.3 asts, 1.6 steals, 0.7 blks.

Thats Grant Hill’s stat line for his first 6 years before he hurt his foot.

I think he plays like a bigger Grant Hill. Crafty like Simmons. Grant Hill did most of his work around the rim & had runners & floaters like Simmons does. He lacked tha long ball like Simmons does. Could get a board & go coast to coast. He can finish through contact. Had a keen sense of when to pass & when to shoot. He was a dynamic athlete, but not on the level of a LeBron…like Simmons is. Plays & guards multiple spots like Simmons does. Made his teammates better like Ben does. I think Ben’s a better passer & rebounder though.

    What do you guys think??

The talent is undeniable. The way he can dribble, pass, and attack the basket is really special. He’s a tremendous athlete with a tremendous frame.

BUT, the lack of a jumpshot and scoring moves (facing the basketball or posted up) still leave question for me. He does a lot of scoring in the post where he just is just more athletic and physical than other college players.

I really want to see more development and more of an arsenal on the scoring side. Wiggins has really taken his offensive polish to the next level, so I’ll be curious to see if Simmons can do the same. Simmons really has polish on every part of his game except scoring moves which is honestly way more than Wiggins had/has.

Ben’s is a good player. Potentially great. Its just that its 2016. You’re expected to be able to knock down a jump shot here and there. Especially mid range. People comparing him to Magic & Lebron need to stop it. He can be great in his own right (he is only 19) but he’ll need to improve some things if he wants to dominate on an NBA stage. Its just that people are overhyping him as if he’s gonna come in from the rip and put up the same numbers. Give him time. He’s young.

I agree! He will have to continue to keep polishing his game, but he’s going to have an athletic advantage in tha NBA as well..although not as big as he has now. As far as the numbers though, I don’t know what he’ll average. I just know he’ll change a franchise from tha moment he gets drafted.

I think the Grant Hill comp is pretty good the way you described it.  I feel the same way.  Both players are all-court players who make basketball plays.  It’s fun to play with guys like that as they tend to bring out the best in the players around them and weirdly lead by fitting into the team concept.

People may forget that Grant Hill was poised to be the face of the NBA after Michael.  He had the college and family pedigree, was highly marketable, poised, articulate, and could really play at the highest level.  Each game was a triple-double possibility for him.  When he went to Orlando, he and McGrady were going to be the next superteam.  Sadly, injuries never let Hill be the superstar he was supposed to be.

As a basketball fan, I’m excited to see if Simmons can become the great player he seems to hold the promise for.

Why does nobody talk about his defense. Against Florida and other teams he wouldn’t rotate when he got a screen set on him and he doesn’t know a thing about help defense. Can you name any high level young forwards who don’t play much defense. Hate on me if you want but he needs to fix that more than anything

No one talks about his rebounding. I can’t believe how many he’s getting. So much for a tweener, dude’s a PF.

He has had moments where he hasn’t rotated, but he has also had a lot of moments where he’s gotten blocks & steals because of his anticipation. Is he Kawhi? No, but he’s not a poor defender either. To me, he’s a versatile defender. Against Kentucky, he went from guarding a big to Ullis. He’s had good & bad plays on D…So I think its just a matter of when you choose to pay attention to him.

Also, because he plays tha most important part of defense. Tha defensive play doesn’t end until tha defense gets tha rebound. He’s averaging just under 14.

IMO Ben probably has not been taught Defense.. Kevin Boyle was his coach at Montverde.. Ben was the best player and he was checking centers..WE all know High School stars rarely every play defense..And at LSU coach Johnny Jones..hell what is have even know for..The entire team is terrible defensively so lets assume he is not being taught much defense there either. I do agree with the Grant Hill comparison but the difference is Grant showed flashes being able to hit the 15-17 ft Jumper. Ben has shown none of that , he simply does not even take any perimenter shots so i think thats a major consern. but lets think ALL SHAQ could do was dunk in College why try to do anything different. BEN is great as getting to the bucket on the college level.. its working.  His best years are still in front of him.. FRANCHISE CHANGER INDEED

If he is a franchise changer than he needs to play defense. Rebounding is an important part of basketball as a whole don’t get me wrong. He’s getting 14 boards a game because he isn’t playing the most competent people in the world. Going against Lebron or KD or Kawhi or PG he will have trouble. If he doesn’t play defense what rebounds will there be?

The OP has the best assessment of B. Simmons’s current game and future potential that I have read on here, and that includes my own write-ups. I don’t even know if I want to agree totally with the G. Hill comp, but I can’t disagree with it. The more I actually think about it and remember, the more the comp makes sense. Ben’s not as smooth and fluid in his movements like Hill was, doesn’t have quite the floor presence/game of a Magic, but he’s in the neighborhood of both guys’ strengths.

After Laettner and others left Duke, Grant Hill did take over and handle the ball more and do many of the things Simmons does now.  Very good comparison.  Although, Simmons is guarding college centers and Hill didn’t have to, and it would not have been too good for him to do that for fouls anyway.

Odom actually, at Rhode Island, was very close to Simmons in college.  But Odom was Odom way back then, and Simmons doesn’t look like going down that path.  Simmons should have more talented college teammates too.

Bigger Grant Hill is a good idea for people to consider, unselfish but can score when his team needs it.

Simmons can probably do more, but he is playing the right way for his team.  He can defend, multiple positions, but LSU needs him to avoid fouls and to defend in the paint.  He may have range, but he scores at a high percentage on drives and post-ups against smaller players plus his team has a few shooters so it is best if he keeps doing what he is doing.

He could be a 6-10 NBA point guard, so he is going with the top pick. Just not sure how a Simmons, Saric, Noel, Okafor, Embiid starting 5 will work, for spacing.

Get back to me when you have a comparsison that doesn’t involve a 3 inch height differential.

Pics I’ve seen of Lebron standing next to High School Simmons has around 3 inches difference too….so I’m not buying that one either.

He’s a rich man’s Lamar Odom…i.e. better in almost every aspect of the game but similar skillset and size.

Hes way better than lamar odom already every game he steps up in the clutch even without a jumper and he probably could average a triple double if he had better teammates

I honestly believe he could average a triple double in the NBA if he was put in a system where he was a ‘pure point guard’. I doubt thats his best position…but we’ll see.

The 10 points and rebounds seems a given if he averaged 40mins.

He’d have to sacrafice his own shot and be surrounded by knockdown shooters to get the assists…but plenty of PGs flirt with 10APG.
