So I’ve been thinking, shouldn’t the Cavs be trying to get Barea? Right now their backup PG is Matthew Dellavedova. He’s ok, but he shouldn’t be getting any minutes for a team trying to win the championship. It’s well known that the Wolves would like to unload Barea’s contract, and I think the Cavs should be very excited to get him. He’s a clear upgrade over Dellavedova, and he has experience as a backup on a championship team. He’s also entering the last season of his contract, so there is very little risk. I put together this trade on the Trade Machine, keeping in mind the rumors that have come out today. In this trade the Wolves are able to unload Shved, Barea, and Mbah a Moute, and the 76ers get Haywood, who will have a very valuable contract next, as it will be over $10 million completely non-guaranteed. Also the Sixers would get the Heat’s first round pick this year. The Cavs lose their backup center, but Blatche, Okafor, and O’Neal are all still free agents, and I think they’d all be upgrades over Haywood anyway.

    http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=lbgufsh

NOTE: Tristan Thompson is in the trade because the Trade Machine would not let me include Wiggins. I put in Thompson becasuse he makes $5.1 million while Wiggins makes $5.5 million (and I tried adding extra salary to simulate what would happen if Wiggins’ slightly larger contract is used instead of Thompson’s, and it still works). So pretend Thompson is Wiggins in this trade.

I would like nothing better than for somebody to take Barea off our hands. His first year here was ok, but the rest of the time he has been somewhere between absolute garbage and a complete negative on the court. Adelman’s irrational love for Barea pretty much killed the team. That said, I feel like he could really thrive in a 7th or 8th man role; especially if he has several other options on the court that could attract attention/leave him open. He’s someone who was completely wasted on the Wolves, but would come back to bite them elsewhere. So take him!

Most of the second unit guys were awful. JJ was asked to provide a lot of the offense with that group, and he wasn’t particularly efficient at it.

I think if JJ would look a lot better on a good team, playing with a second unit that had a few guys who were threats to score, and where JJ could take more efficient shots.

Having said that, pretty much everyone in Minnesota wants to see JJ gone. JJ fits on Cleveland as well as anywhere. He could see minutes with Marion, Thompson, and Delledova.

I like the idea just think that they should hold onto Haywood because they need a back up center.
http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=q2gkh6j is a similar idea with some tweaks

Cle becomes: including Ray Allen into decision

    Irving – Allen – James – Love – Varejao

    Barea /Dela – Williams / Miller – Marion / Jones – Thompson- Haywood

    Minny becomes:

    Rubio – Martin – Wiggins – Young – Pekovic

    Williams – Lavine – Muhammed – Bennett – Dieng

    Philly becomes:

MCW – Waiters – Brewer – Mbah Ah Moute – Noel

    Shved – Wroten – Thompson/JRich – Moutrie – Sims

    ____________________________________________________________

However another decision Cleveland could make which I beleive could be better short term is to sign Chauncey Billups, he is a great leader and shooter and could help mentor Kyrie and the rest of the team

You’re crazy if you want Delavedova at 490k per season less than Barea at 5m per season. Thats 10X the price.

Delly had a solid rookie season, is only going to be playing 8-10 mpg when Irving is on the bench and is a solid defender and shooter. He costs nothing, what more can you want as a backup PG. Barea at 5million! You gotta be kidding me.

The Cavs could find such better ways to spend that 5m than Barea who completely sucked for the Twolves last season.

To highlight how bad this idea is, let me put a few things in perspective.

Barea came off a season shooting 38% from the field and 31% from 3pt. Thats as bad as Ricky Rubio. Plus he’s a total defensive liability.

Dellavedova’s rookie stats are as good as Barea’s career averages.

Now you’re telling me that its worth spending 5m to upgrade Delly (who is improving) for Barea (who is declining).

I’d seriously give this post -5 if I could. It’s so stupid. Just ask a Timberwolves fan what they’d like to do with Barea’s contract.

I see where you’re coming from, but I guess you value Dellavedova more than I do. I think that if I’m the Cavs, I’m looking to upgrade talent wherever possible because I want to win a championship now. At this point in time, Barea is a better player than Dellavedova. He certainly was much worse last year than he’s been throughout his career, but I think that on a winning team like the Cavs he will play better. Also, like you said, he’d only play about 10 MPG. That’s not a lot of time, but for those 10 minutes, I would prefer Barea on the floor than Dellavedova. Also I agree that Dellavedova’s contract probably provides more value than Barea’s, but for a team that will have 3 max players at the start of the 2015-16 season, I’m not sure if an extra $4.5 million this year matters much, considering they’re trying to win a championship.

Another thing by the way. My point isn’t to try to make you look bad, but you did say Dellavedova’s rookie stats are as good as Barea’s career stats.

      Barea’s career averages per 36 minutes: 15.6 points, 3.8 rebounds, 6.5 assists, 2.8 TO, 41.9% FG, 34.7% 3P, 79.8% FT, 13.4 PER.

      Dellavedova’s career averages per 36 minutes: 9.6 points, 3.5 boards, 5.3 assists, 1.7 TO, 41.2% FG, 36.8% 3P, 79.2% FT, 10.7 PER.

Plus, Delly won’t even be playing the traditional role of a backup PG because Dion Waiters is capable there as well. Blatt can very comfortably play Mike Miller or Ray Allen at the two with Waiters running the point while Kyrie is resting. So Delly is really more of a 2.5-string PG.

I think Dellavedova could be a solid backup no need to trade for an overpaid Barea, if not the Cavs have John Lucas III too, unless I’m mistaken.

Wow the same people that don’t want CLEV to give up Wiggins are now saying the second year player would be better than Barea. Are you people for real?

Barea isn’t needed,  the Cavs have Dellavedova and John Lucas 111, they acquired from the Jazz…If Lucas can regain his mojo from the season he had playing for the Bulls, Barea wouldn’t be needed

MattyD will be the one of the best pgs at the World Cup and be the leading pg for Australia while Carlos Arroyo will still be the best guard for PR

The Cavs have enough scorers.  Enough shooters too, if James Jones and Mike Miller play passably well.

What the Cavs DO need (other than a young, athletic 7 foot rim protector with a corner 3 point shot although the next guy we see like that will be the FIRST in NBA history) is a little bit more size, defense, and athleticism in the backcourt.

Waiters, Irving, and Dellavadova are good young talents but they aren’t that big.  Not much defense at point, so get an athletic point guard who can defend (and maybe even play some 2).

Or get an athletic backup 2 guard who can finish and play some solid defense.  Like a BROKE man’s Andrew Wiggins or something.  A guy to throw at someone like Jimmy Butler or Danny Green for a few minutes here and there.

Even though he is not athletic, Aaron Craft could be some good, cheap 3rd string point guard insurance for them.  Decent defense and a pass-first guy who hustles.

Essentially, JJ Barea is an undersized combo guard, a volume scorer and a guy who is getting up there in age.  Why not go for a guy who is younger and a bit bigger if they want to go in that direction?

They could fill another need or two, but the Cavs look like the most complete team in the league.  On the face of it, they need defense and length at center and some of the same at guard.  … JJ Barea doesn’t give them too much, and he is fairly high priced.
