Dwyane Wade came off the bench for the first time in year against the Spurs, which got me to thinking: Should Wade come off the bench from now on and play a Ginobili role?

If the Heat could sign a 3-D player like Sefolosha during the off-season, could they start the aforementioned free agent at the 2-guard and bring Wade off the bench?  I think that would definitely help Wade with his injuries.

Not only would it help Wade, but it would preserve him for the playoffs as well as extend his career immensely.  Ginobili plays about 25-30 MPG during the regular season but 30-35 MPG during the playoffs, which is why the Spurs usually look like a completely different team in the playoffs.

The Heat bench would also be strengthened next season, as they can go with a line-up of Cole-Wade-Allen-Beasley-Anderson/Oden while starting Chalmers-3/D Player-James-Battier-Bosh.

    What do you guys think?

The idea of D-Wade coming off he bench would seem a stange one as he is still considered an elite player but the fact that this suggestion has come one of this forum’s best posters gives it some credence and credability.

I don’t actually take much notice of whether a player starts or not, a lot epends on how many minutes they play so if Miami only wanted to give D-Wade 25 to 30mpg then this could be done from the bench or as a starter. But I always like the idea of trying to get a genuine scorer to have a run at the other teams’ second unit. This way the team can either get a scoring burst going or it forces the opposition to put their starters back into the game sooner than they would have wanted.

Teams break down exactly who is more effective scoring with which team mates on court far more than we can so if anyone could provide stats on this subject, it would be facinating to see.

Teams do however need to get their line up set and changing the starting line up for the play offs to bring a star back into it from the bench could disrupt things a bit.

My personal feelings on this are that D-Wade will watch his minutes as much as he can going forward and may have an occasional game on the bench but it would be a bit too early to put him to the bench yet in his career especially with Miami having Ray Allen already in that role. But going forward it will be interesting to see what happens.

Not sure if he should come off the bench but he should definitely be the second option.  Bosh seems like he is somehow still getting better.  His jump shot has become lethal.  Wade is still really good but he just is so banged up with the multiple injuries he has endured throughout his career.  I have a feeling that there is a rapid fall off coming in the near future.  The Heat need to ask themselves what they are going to do moving forward.  Ideally they lock up Bosh and Lebron long term, and Wade would take a 3 year deal for less money.  I don’t know if his ego would allow this being he is the original member of the Heat’s big 3.  This really would set them up for more success in the future.  They would be able to bring in one more nice piece and they would continue to reek havoc.

The thing I have against such an idea is that this makes Wade the focus of the opponents defense when he comes in and LeBron is out: doesn’t that make it harder for him in terms of staying healthy? Playing with LeBron allows him to be a complementary player, on offense as well as on defense.

With Ray Allen in the line up, there is a case for D-Wade playing more with the 2nd unit even if he still starts as Ray Allen’s strength remains his 3 point ability and he is such a good off the ball player, he’d probably get more openings alongside LeBron than without him.

Miami will look to closely manage D-Wade’s minutes and having Ray Allen there means that D-Wade can easily be kept to about 30mpg if needed and the team don’t lose much potency.

The interesting thing going forward would be if Miami could find another good veteran or complimentary player if Ray Allen retires at the end of the season as that will be important if they want to manage D-Wade carefully going forward.

I like the idea of D wade of the bench, Norris Cole has been shooting pretty good lately but he still has mental lapses and I would love to see D wade have the ball instead.

No.  I think they should limit his minutes if they are worried about his health, or just sit him out for a while.  Coming off the bench doesn’t make any sense to me, especially once they get into the playoffs.
