Im Your FatherParticipantA thought came to me today, but I really don’t know enough about shooting to decide what I think about it?
Do you guys think that Lebron will shoot a much higher percentage from 3 this year? My though being that he has improved his jump shot every year, to the point where he is a pretty good shooter from deep. He has shot ok percentages, with the vast majority of his attempts coming off the dribble and often contested. Now that he will have the opportunity to spot up more do you think his percentages will skyrocket? Or is he a better a shooter off the dribble?
I also had a question about Michael Jordan’s 3 point shooting. How good a long range shooter was he? I was pretty young when I watched him play and at that point I wasn’t really analyzing his game, I just thought he must make every shot. But now looking at his stats, he had some amazing years 3-point shooting wise throughout his career, and also some years where he made 3s with terrible efficiency. Just how good a shooter was he?

Yeah, I think he will have a career high 3-pt percentage this year. He will still be every teams main concern but they cant give him every ounce of Defensive pressure like he had in Cle. Therefore, he will find himself wide open in spot-up situations like every other Heat player will. He isn’t really a spot up shooter but he can make open 3’s with no problem. 37% is realistic.

I don’t think he was a great long range shooter. He was an attack first player who relied alot on his midrange game and creativity. I dont think he even desired to shoot threes therefore he wasn’t great at it.

Im Your FatherParticipantThat’s what I have sort of heard about Jordan. What’s weird though is how wildly inconsistent he was he shot .374 in 96-97 and then .238 the next year. Obviously it didn’t impact his effectiveness at all, it just seems strange for such a polished all-around player.

JoeWolf1Yeah, Jordan was also pretty streaky from 3 too, he was capable of knocking down 4 or 5 any given night, but he only attempted 1.7 per game on his career. Like Jammin-Lemon said, he was a slasher with a great mid-range game and as he matured he was phenominal post player, even from 15 feet out. It was amazing how he’d back down a guard til around the free throw line and nail a fadeaway jumper from 13-16 feet out consistantly.
It’s also a sign of the times, when Jordan was in high school and college there was not 3 point line.

llperezjordan was decent 3 point shooter He rarely forced threes though, usually took him when defenders gave him lots of space. He entered the 3 point contest one year and finished with 6 points which isd the all time low. If i had to compare his 3 point shooting ability to a plery today it would be someone like caron butler. You know you cant leave him open and he can always make them and get hot, but not a knockdown 3 point guy.

esperanzafleet69Participant^^^^
exactly… also for jordan you need to look at how many 3’s he attempted in those seasons along with his %…
