Indianapolis – Butler junior guard Shelvin Mack has filed the paperwork to declare for the 2011 NBA draft.
Mack, who played an integral role in the Bulldogs’ second consecutive run to the NCAA Division I men’s basketball national championship game, has not hired an agent and has followed all of the guidelines to retain his eligibility.
"I’m exploring my options and gathering information to see what opportunities might exist for me," said Mack, who completed his third season with the Bulldogs. "I’ve always had a dream to play in the NBA, and I want to make an informed decision on that possibility."
Mack averaged 20.3 points in Butler’s six NCAA tournament games, and he led or shared the team lead in scoring in five of the six tournament contests. The 6-3 guard had 30 points in Butler’s victory over top-seeded Pittsburgh, and he tallied 27 points in the Bulldogs’ win over second-seeded Florida. He set a Butler NCAA tournament record with 122 points in this year’s Division I National Championship.
Mack, who started 37 of 38 Butler games this past season, was Butler’s second-leading scorer in 2010-11 with a 16.0 average. He led the Bulldogs in assists (131) and finished third on the team in rebounds (4.5). He was named the Most Outstanding Player at the Southeast Regional, and he was picked to the All-Tournament Team at the Final Four for a second consecutive year. He earned second-team All- Horizon League honors, after behind a first team pick a year ago. A member of the 2011 Lou Henson All- America Team, Mack currently stands 11th on Butler’s all-time scoring list with 1,527 career points.
Butler finished the 2010-11 season with a 28-10 record, including a 13-5 mark in the Horizon League. The Bulldogs captured a share of the Horizon League regular season championship for a fifth consecutive year and won the Horizon League Tournament for a second straight year. Butler also won the Diamond Head Classic in Hawaii in late December.
The Bulldogs took a 14-game wining streak into the national title game, the third-longest winning streak in school history.
Mack is the second Butler player to declare for the NBA draft in the past year. Gordon Hayward, who was Butler’s leading scorer and rebounder a year ago, entered last year’s draft and was selected No. 9 overall by the Utah Jazz.
Underclassmen who have declared for the draft, but have not hired an agent, have until May 8 to withdraw their names from consideration and retain their eligibility.
