I haven’t posted much on nbadraft.net, but when I do it’s usually related to the Timberwolves. I’ve been following this site for over 10 years (I mostly like to follow news rather than write opinions) and have noticed there is a small but intelligent group of Twolves followers on here. Anyway, I was wondering for you fans out there how the team should divide the minutes for the upcoming season? I ask because it seems that Flip has made most of his moves in terms of solidifying the roster. Quick recap: we signed Budinger, Martin, Brewer, and Ronny Turiaf. It seems Pekovic will re-sign any day now.

I was dinking around and came up with my best guess on how the minutes could be spread out. I left Cunningham, Brown, and Johnson on the sidelines in street clothes.

    Rubio 32 minutes
    Shved 16 minutes
    Barea 16 minutes
    Martin 30 minutes
    Muhammad 12 minutes
    Brewer 10 minutes
    Budinger 20 minutes
    Williams 22 minutes
    Love 34 minutes
    Dieng 12 minutes
    Turiaf 6 minutes
    Pekovic 30 minutes

    Brown
    Cunningham
    Johnson

Alright, So how do you guys/girls think it will play out? I know it is speculative, but do you see anybody being sent to the Dleague? Any Surprises? Thanks.

well minutes is a hard thing to gauge. You know 1st round picks get their minutes to prove their worth, so i think shabazz will get significantly more minutes than you gave him. Shed is a pg, and he showed that in the olympics. By way of the wolves, puzzling aquisition of stock piling on pgs in the last few years they have many guys playing the 2 who should be playing the 1. Shed i think should be kept around as the 3rd pg. When barea’s contract is up i fill they should resign him as rubio’s primary back up. I guess what im saying is he should be given the bench most nights this season. I see shabazz getting all the minutes you gave shed if they want people playing their true positions. Dante cunningham is a hard nosed guy who produces. He contributes more than williams, but williams was the 2nd pick so he will be given love’s back up minutes by way of the wolves giving him his chance, but regardless of that dante to me is more consistent when you measure their minutes. Also, Brewer only 10 min? I hope for a guy who got his career back on track in denver and showed what he can really do that you are wrong. I see him cutting into the minutes you gave chase and martin. Other than what i have stated i agree with your theory.

my bad i just reread someone else’s response and totally forgot to address turiaf and dieng situation. You got two guys splitting minutes behind pek? I can see one or the other getting the 18min you have left for the back up position, but not both players splitting minutes each night.

Injuries were a big issue last year so it appears they are well protected. Also I double Dieng get many minutes this year. Derrick Williams will be trade if he is only good for 22 minutes.

It is also possible that because of how games are close sometimes, most of the starters minutes can decrease more so they can be fresh for the season.

Also Muhammed will have to earn his minutes or be in the D league for most of the year and it is possible that Barea get moved by the deadline. Also Williams could be gone around that time as well.

That’s a longggg rotation. I don’t know how many times in the NBA 11 players average over 10 minutes a game but I can’t imagine it being much.

I’m a twolves fan just about every one of my posts concerns them so I’ll give my input. This is all rough estimates obviously but here it goes

    Starters
    Rubio 32-35 mpg
    KMART 32-35 mpg
    Brewer 28-32 mpg
    KLOVE 32-35 mpg
Pek 30 mpg ( limited due to injury concerns and stamina)
    Bench
    Shabazz 10-15 mpg
    Budinger 20-23 mpg
    DWILL 22-25 mpg
    Shved 13-16 mpg
    Dieng 10-13 mpg
    Barea 6 mpg

No offense but the better question for all us twolves fans out there which I thought was what this topic would be based on the title I saw and since its more of debatable topic rather than total assumptions is between DWILL Shabazz and Budinger who do you all think will be the odd man out in the rotation since with Brewer compensating for KMARTs defensive liability I expect brewer to go for high 20s in mpg’s

I’m also semi-convinced Lorenzo brown doesn’t make this team just based on their intense depth in the backcourt

NYBALLAS raised a good point. Who’s not going to play? I’d like to see Corey Brewer play closer to 20 minutes, but that means that Budinger, Bazz, or Dwill will be losing minutes. I guess we could send Shabazz to the Dleague, but I’m curious to see if he can prove himself on the professional level. Also, Adelman has a history of playing guys with the hot hand, so there’s a chance that the rotation fluctuates all season. IF (big IF) the Timberwolves make the playoffs it’ll be interesting to see who gets in to a nine or ten man rotation.

ive been hell exited about all these signings a didnt even realise how hard its going to be to find people minutes! I guess its a shit load better than not having enough players to fill the 48 minutes like last season haha. i definently think cunningham will be in the rotation, he works hard and Rick loves him. Dwill has a ton of pressure to step up now or he may not be around for long 🙁

Injuries will “solve” a lot of the problems with finding minutes. It is not as if Adelman will have all of these options for every game. Also, there is no guarantee that this is the roster once the season starts. D Will could be moved, among others.

I think D Williams gets more of the backup PF minutes. Either Dieng or Turiaf sits, probably Dieng at the start of the season. Brown will likely either be “D leagued” or simply not play other than garbage minutes (if he even makes the team). Cunningham will get minutes, but not nearly as many as last year, 10 mpg at most.

With what they paid for Brewer, Martin, and Budinger, I can’t see these guys not getting 20 plus mpg, each. You don’t give someone 5M, or more, and then not play them unless they really, really suck.

Shabazz is going to have to earn his minutes. If he doesn’t play the way Rick wants he will either be stuck with garbage minutes, or perhaps D leagued. If he plays well, and efficiently, then he could get 15 mpg, or perhaps even more.

Pek 32 (assuming Pek resigns with Minny, of course)
    Turiaf 6
    Dieng 0-5
Love 34 (some of these minutes as a small ball 5)
    D Williams 18
    Cunningham 6
    Budinger 22
    Brewer 22
    Shabazz 8
    Martin 26
    Shved 18
    Rubio 34
    Barea 14
    Brown 0-5

Who will be the first PF off the bench, Cunnigham or Williams? I love both of them, but it was very spuratic, Williams would usually get the start when Love was out, but that didn’t mean he played much more the Dante. And when Love was healthy there were games where DWill didn’t even see the court.

It should be great to have those two batteling for playing time, and just all out playing hard.

And I cant see Muhammed getting more minutes then Brewer when he is MN’s Defensive wing, and they already have Chase, Alexy, and Martin who do what he does(and more), score.

Also, I would love to see Shved recieve more playing time then JJ. He can play the point, and since he will be asked to do less this year, I believe he will be more affective. And even though I love when JJ goes off on scoring burst, there are a lot of times when he cancles those out with dumb plays/shots and making bad decisions.

The back up Center postion will be fun to see develope, right now its seems to be a complete crap shoot. Obviously it highly depends on matchups, but my favorite is Dieng. He has good size, plays good defense, can pass and has an alright shot. CJ has come into camp with 15 punds of muscle added, bringing him to 230. His main problem last year was he could not gaurd big Centers in the post. So if he can add more size still, I believe he could be in the mix with his athletic abitlity(guy was a highlght machine when he played) and energy. Turiaf, to me seems like a why not guy. If your team needs a boost with some D, emotion, and enthusiam, throw him in and see if he cant get your guys pumped. But, I see him racking up the DNP-coaching decision.

Is it just me or does this exercise prove that Brewer’s money should have went towards a better backup C? I like Brewer a lot, but Pek is injury prone. Having a more experienced backup like Kaman, or Dalembert would be a more useful way to spend the money. This might also lead to pouting or acting out from Bazz. Don’t get me wrong I am super excited for this season for the Wolves, but I think Brewer was an overreaction from last year.
