mikeyvthedonParticipantI think a majority of us will commend Shaka Smart for his excellent coaching job at Virginia Commonwealth University. This was a clip I got via NBC CollegeBasketballTalk and just highlights the swarming defense played by VCU. Semi-reminiscent to former Arkansas coach Nolan Richardson’s 40 minutes of hell, the Rams cover the ball full court. I think the major difference is, they try to run it back just as fast.
More and more these college teams are trying to catch people off guard and run as much as possible. Your personnel for this system is important, but it can really mess with teams, not to mention put a ton of pressure on your guards. Even so, it can make up for a lack of size when your big men have a tough time putting the ball on the floor without getting swarmed. VCU has done this with a great deal of success under Shaka Smart, this is just some video evidence of the defense reffered to as "Havoc."

providencefriars1ParticipantThis is the only reason why VCU played in the tourney a year a go. This defense speeds everyone up causes turnovers and is the new focal point of VCU basketball

UNCbasketballbumParticipantGO Rams!!! VCU class of 2005 here. I wasn;t there during the HAVOC era, but it is always good to see VCU get some love on this site. Very excited for the upcoming season. We only lost Bradford Burgess and we have some very good recruits coming in and players coming back. The switch to the A-10 could improve our RPI. I don’t know how strong Dayton, St. Joseph’s and Xavier are going to be this year. Can’t wait for college basketball season!
