TarHeelRavenParticipantI think we all remember the ridiculous hilight video of him doing some ridiculous dunk when he was 14. That video basically put him on the map. As a Carolina fan, who are we getting with this guy really? Someone with all that talent and athleticism isn’t ranked anywhere close to the top ten for the 2016 class. Something seems to be missing with this guy. My question is, who is Seventh Woods?

ChicagoCaseyParticipantI still like him and I believe if he was in any other class he would be a top 20 recruit. They hype quited down on him since his freshman year because he’s a undersize 2 guard. He’s trying to work on his point guard skills and if he does I believe he can be something special at Carolina and he can be a 2 and done.

Robb_CParticipantHe’s definitely not a two and done, hes a three to four year player at UNC.. Hes an uber athlete but still needs work on his guard game before hes ready for a professional career.. Also needs to hit the weight room.. He can be a bigger verison of Nate Robinson

DukeDaSquadParticipantHe tore his acl. Still just as athletic but doesn’t go for big dunks like he once has. I think he is being ranked not as high because he’s being ranked as an undersized shooting guard. He’s a lockdown man defender, great shot blocker, good shooter and ballhandler. I personally feel there isn’t much that separates him from Dennis smith Jr in terms of skill set and athleticism. His tenacity on the court is Russell Westbrook like in my opinion. Also this class is super loaded. I think any other year he is easily a top player but honestly ranking doesn’t mean anything. There have been many instances where players have been ranked much lower than him or not even ranked at all and still ended up turning into high level prospects and making good careers in college and the nba

GBeeParticipantWhen did he tear his ACL? Post a link.
I just remember him having a wrist injury.
I’ve only had a little exposure to him in game action with Team USA and a couple of UA games and I wasn’t really impressed. He’s athletic for sure, but I felt as though he didn’t utilize his athleticism enough, at least offensively. Defensviely he’s fine. Sturdy, balanced, doesn’t gamble or reach a whole lot. He’s good on that end. Offensively it seemed as though he’s trying too hard to be a pure point. Turning down shots, turning down opportunities to attack and instead just passing the ball around aimlessly. Having a distributor’s mentality is fine, but him playing this way seemed forced as if he was trying to be something that he was not. He basically looked like he was handcuffing himself. Skill-wise he just looked OK across the board. Nothing really stands out, not his shooting, his shiftiness with his handle or vision. Outside of his leaping ability and his good defense he’s kinda blah.

ProximoParticipantDamn good on-ball defender, enough to get him on the court early for UNC. So athletic he could easily function as a change of pace player, he’s gotta make defense his calling card though, and show steady improvement in his combo/pg skills and he’ll easily get looks in the league. Athletically he reminds me a bit of a young Jeff Teague, he’s obviously not as slippery with the ball in his hands.
Needs to work on his shot selection and his ability to run the P’n’R from what I’ve seen. Also decision making when he’s in top-gear, and obviously his shooting, If he can figure his 3pt shooting out, he could function as a Toney Douglas type in college. .

Butter13ParticipantThe reason he’s not ranked higher is because he’s a 6’1 two-guard.

ncballerHe is a very enigmactic prospect to project, from someone that has seen him play plenty of times. I think his number one weakness is overthinking out on the court. I think he really let the critics and pressure get to him when they kept questioning his ability to run a team. His overthinking manifests itself in questionable decision making, tentativeness and inconsistency shooting (although his mechanics are not bad at all). When he just gets out there and does his thing, he is a top 10 player in the class. When he doesn’t, he blends in way too much and you leave the gym asking yourself how a kid with so much talent is only putting up 7 points.
This may run contrary to conventional wisdom, but I think he needs to quit worrying about being seen as a pure PG and just play the Seventh Woods game. He is much more effective when he does. His last month of AAU ball he averaged 32.4 ppg, and outplayed both Jalek Felton (although I think Felton just got the upper hand in the head to head at the Chick-Fil-A classic) and Markelle Fultz in head to head matches, because he quit worrying about being a true PG. We all remember his famous 40 point outing in his head to head against Dennis Smith as well. The question is, can he do that consistently?
I will refrain from projecting his development trajectory until Rawle Alkins makes a decision, but as of now, until Woods can consistently just not think out there, I think Tony Bradley is most likely to contribute the most right away from the UNC signees. This guy is having one hell of a senior season. His mixtapes are boring, but he gets the job done and I think will be a great college player.
Also TarHeelRaven, although his competition is not as good as Bradley’s or Woods’, Brandon Robinson is shooting 63% from 3 this year so far. 🙂

Robb_CParticipantI love how everyone address his stellar AAU play.. Hes built for AAU basketball most athletes usually are, Now put him in a situation where he has to play half court offense and understand when and where he has to attack the defense.. well thats a whole different story. I see this kid as a turnover machine his first few years in college which will be one of the main reasons it will be hard for Roy to trust him as a PG.. Hes a 2 guard with an average basketball IQ.

ncballerIf by everyone you mean me, then yes haha. I understand where your concerns lie and you could be correct in your assumptions. I do think that Roy’s system will help him minimize his weaknesses and showcase his strengths if he is told not to worry about anything but playing defense, getting to the free throw line and hitting open 3s.
I think you need to catch him play a game where he doesn’t overthink. If so, then you will see why we think he can be special.

Robb_CParticipantYou and everyone point out his games in AAU where hes up and down in transition every possession, which is one of his strengths, he is above average in transiton but everything else needs work..

airenn34ParticipantExcellent analysis as always ncballer. Someone mentioned he had an old ACL injury? I think that was Dennis Smith and not Seventh. I hope Seventh does not end up like Dexter Strickland. His mental makeup doesnt scream Strickland. If Seventh is on is it safe to assume his ceiling is Westbrook?

GBeeParticipantHe’s not nearly as physically imposing as Westbrook. I guess he could still be growing but his dimensions are pretty small and this is after he grew a couple of inches the past year and change. Even for a PG, his wingspan is subpar. His build is sturdy but he’s light. Then there’s a question about his mentality. Westbrook’s relentlessess is unmatched whereas Woods leaves you thinking that he could be doing more more often than not. Westbrook plays like he doesn’t think. He just goes. Woods plays like he’s overthinking the game.

TarHeelRavenParticipantOf course when Seventh committed to Carolina, I immdiately thought of Strickland. Dexter drove me absolutely insane during his four years at Carolina. I have never seen a four year college guard at a top college basketball institue not improve his skillset and jumpshot during a four year career than Strickland. He was the exact same guy his first game at the Dean Dome as he was during his last. Athleticism is nice to have, but you HAVE TO have some sort of half court game, jumper, basketball IQ to play in college when the game slows down. I worry Seventh wil be that guy, electric in the open floor but just a guy that can’t operate in a half court game.

ncballerAirenn324, Gbee pretty much said what I was going to say about the Westbrook comparison. I think more than anything Woods’ mindset has a LONG way to go before he can even be talked about in the same sentence as Westbrook.
Also TarHeelRaven, I am comfortable saying that Woods is a better prospect than Strickland and I think will leave UNC a better player. Strickland’s demise was predicted by some who watched him his senior season of HS. He literally blended in every single game. His jumpshot was/is so ugly as well and I think Woods’ shot is much better and more likely to translate than Strickland’s. He does everything better than Strickland did at the same stage, if you ask me. Although Strickland made the MCDAA game, I think he was more of a Nate Britt (3star) level recruit.
