UNCbasketballbumParticipantI was really shocked when I read that Seth Greenebrg had been fired from Virginia Tech. I had respected what Greenebrg had done there. He didn’t get the top talent in the country or even in the state of Virginia but his teams were competitive, played hard and played together. I remember his team not too long ago with Zabian Dowdell made the NCAA tournament and won a game their. Tech has been good and always pretty competitive in the ACC, so this firing really surprises me.

TRC1991ParticipantGreenberg wasn’t improving, his teams were consistently mediocre

ICEsliceParticipantExactly, he just wasn’t getting the job done. He had the right group of players too. His next job will definitely be of a lower profile.

Wahoo757ParticipantThis is surprising, VT has some good talent returning next year (Dorian Finney Smith, Erick Green, and Jarell Eddie) and they played way better than their record would suggest considering all of their close losses. Hopefully they’ll hire an incompetent coach and will lead to greater Hokie demise, mwahahahaha.

akhan786ParticipantLooks like Montrezl Harrell is up for grabs…
I’ve been hearing that Shaka Smart is the #1 option and is going to get on campus as soon as possible…

surveParticipant….but more of a travesty. Greenberg’s firing I am sure is due to in part him not being able to get to the tournament. Anyone who follows ACC basketball should know, Greenberg has notoriously been getting reamed by the NCAA selection committee. The ACC is a power conference and one of the top 3 or 4 conferences year in and out. There havent been too many times where a team in the ACC had a winning record in the conference and didnt get in. VT didnt get in last year with a 9-7 record in the ACC. (22-12 overall).
But check this out…..VT didnt get in the year before that when they went 25-9 overall and an AMAZING 10-6 in the ACC! Meanwhile, Georgia Tech got in with a 23-13 overall record while finishing below .500 in the ACC at 7-9! Now before you even ask….the answer is NO….Georgia Tech did not sweep VT in the conference. In fact VT went on the road and beat Tech in Atlanta!
If that wasnt the most biased crock of bullchit I ever seen. Then the snubbing of Finney-Smith in the MickeyD’s game proved to me that there is an agenda against VT or Greenberg if not both. I feel bad for Greenburg because he was working to get the program back on track but the NCAA had their foot on his neck.
You can say they had a weak schedule all you want, but somebody please explain how a team that goes 10-6 in a conference with Duke (#6 in the nation at time they met) and UNC (#9 in the nation at time they met)….FSU (#25 at time they met) and Wake Forest (#25 at time they met….and they beat Wake) does not get in over a team that goes 7-9 in the conference?
I mean granted….Tech had some strong wins. They beat Clemson (#16) and Maryland (#19). But it was the fact that they beat a struggling UNC team twice in the regular season, once in the tourny and went to the ACC Finals is why they got in. Still….I go with the 10-6 team over the 7-9 team because VT beat who they were supposed to beat and lost to who they were supposed to lose to.
And for the record, I am Tarheel lifer, not even a big VT fan.

Bill Walton’s KneesParticipantno way will Shaka take this. The Illinois job is more high profile then this, and the greater Chicago area has more talent then the NC area (debateable with recent talent, but as a whole). If UCLA has a bum year, Howland will be fired and Shaka will take that job. Just like Brad Stevens will be the next head coach at Duke.

UNCbasketballbumParticipantI don’t understand how anybody can trash Seth Greeneberg He put Hokie basketball on the map. Cassell Coliseum was a true homecourt advantage. Tech would routinely beat Duke at home and beat UNC many times as well. By the way, there is no chance that Shaka leaves VCU for Virginia Tech.

surveParticipantyeah, if Shaka turned down damn good money at NC State and Illinois, it wouldnt make sense to take the VT job. especially seeing that Greenberg actually was a successful coach. he didnt have the tourney appearances, but I explained that above.

TRC1991Participantim not so sure you can rule out steve wojo as duke’s next head coach

surveParticipantoff topic a bit, but from my knowledge, Johnny Dawkins has always been candidate #1 and next in line as Coach K’s successor….unless something has changed recently.

akhan786ParticipantI’m sure Duke will look at someone with head coaching experience…
All I know is NO ONE wants to be Coach K’s successor. I’d rather be the guy after the successor.

M-EazyParticipantCan’t spell NIT without Virginia Tech! Lmao that was their motto under Greenberg But seriously the talk around VA is that Dell Curry is #1 canidate to take the job. Would add some meaning to those VA Tech vs Duke games!
