The early slate of NCAA games are interesting as far as positioning in the polls go, but for NBA scouts, the start of the college season also marks the start of their work on the 2011 draft. It is early, of course, and players’ projected draft positioning will fluctuate greatly between now and June — who would have foreseen, say, Gordon Hayward as a lottery pick at this point last season? — but one Eastern Conference personnel executive took the time to break down a lottery’s worth collegiate pro prospects. The following list is presented in order of the scout’s top players:

1. Harrison Barnes, SF, North Carolina. “He’s 18 and he is a terrific athlete, but he can also shoot and do a little bit of everything.”

2. Jared Sullinger, PF, Ohio State. “He is going to be a beast. There are some concerns about his size (6-9), but he is long and he is just so strong on the block.”

3. Perry Jones, F, Baylor. “He’s a 6-11 guy who plays like a shooting guard. Fun to watch.”

4. Trey Thompkins, PF, Georgia. “He’s big (6-10, 250), he is strong and he is smart. He already has good footwork in the post.”

5. Kyrie Irving, PG, Duke. “He’s a tough kid and a leader. There are some good point guards in this draft, but he’s the best one.”

6. Enes Kanter, C, Kentucky. “You have to love his size (6-11, 260), especially because he is smooth out there, too.”

7. Brandon Knight, PG, Kentucky. “You really want to see him take over his team from the beginning like John Wall did last year.”

8. Kris Joseph, SF, Syracuse. “He is raw, but he has a lot of natural ability, and I expect a lot of progress under Jim Boeheim.”

9. Mason Plumlee, PF, Duke. “It’ll be interesting to see which Duke guys really help their stock — Mason Plumlee, Kyle Singler, Nolan Smith.”

10. Rodney Williams, G/F, Minnesota. “Just an amazing athlete. He has a lot to learn, but he is very talented.”

11. Terrence Jones, F, Kentucky. “He is a little undersize, kind of a 3-4 tweener, but he can shoot and he is tough. He might get himself into the top five or six by the end of the year.”

12. Marcus Morris, PF, Kansas. “He is very polished in the post and with his midrange game, but he was a little overshadowed in past years. I think he is going to be as fun to watch as any player in college basketball this year.”

13. Kemba Walker, PG, Connecticut. “If he was a little taller (6-0), he’d be higher up. But he is very quick, he is a good playmaker and he has an improved shot — he’s a little like Darren Collison or Ty Lawson.”

14. Kyle Singler, F, Duke. “You have to be concerned about the obvious — can he get his own shot in the NBA, what position will he play, is he athletic enough? But he’s a winner. He needs to make strides in his game, though.”

This scout is on point except perry jones playing liek a shooting guard. He does not play like a shooting guard. He doesnt even play like a small forward. Some times i really dont understand what game/player a scout is watching. Something that most people dont know is that you don’t go to school for scouting you just get the job from knowing someone and you watch games and find what players do well and what players dont do well. the difference between a scout and fan is one has the job and the other doesnt.  can’t see morris ahead of about 25-30 people in this draft. terrence will be in consideration for #1 pick when all is said and done. Wouldnt be surprised if barnes ends up not declaring. could opt for more education and developing of skills.

i agree with you stanford. But just throwing one example out there, jay williams. He was the consensus number 1 pick after his sophomore year but he said he wanted to return for his degree whcih he was able to finish in 3 years at duke.

Theres exceptions to every rule of course. it would be much more of a surprise if he decides to stay instead of coming out.

I think he’s alittle bit low here. This guy has been by far the most productive freshman, with Irivng and Sullinger behind him. I think we need to stop banking on HS potential and more on college production. They only HS potential guy that has panned out is Brandon Jennings.

Jay Williams promised his mother that he would Graduate, and that is why he returned for his Junior year.

Also, I just don’t understand why Mason Plumlee is ranked so high! I love the kid, he is a good college player, but really the only thing he is great at doing is jumping. He’s pretty fast in transition, but he doesn’t have a very quick first step. He handles the ball pretty well for a 6’11 guy, but nothing to write home about in that regard. He has no post moves and doesn’t shoot the ball all that well either. He is ok on defense, but sometimes gets pushed around and is very foul-prone. He is an nba prospect no doubt, but I just don’t see a spot in the lottery at all. I hope that no one drafts him at 9, because that would set him up for expecations he could never live up to. I think he would be a good pick in the mid 20s.

Oh, I think he is probably worthy of a first round pick. I just don’t see what part of his game suggests this high potential. He is a good athlete, but not elite and It’s not like he’s dominating in college(although I hope this changes.) There are a lot of just as athletic power forwards in the NBA, most of whom bring a lot more to the table than Mason does. 

All that being said, he is one of my favorite players and I hope he turns out to be an NBA superstar. I hope he proves me completely wrong and dominates in College this year and throughout his career in the league.

Averaging 21 and almost 8 boards, he is great down low and has a nice shot….also has developed a perimeter shot, as even though its a small sample, hes shooting 77% from 3 (7-9, including 3-3 from deep against Santa Clara).  He can be a dangerous player, and as of right now, he definitley should be on this list…not to mention his defense is slighty above average.

We’ve been extremely high on Williams since he broke onto the scene with his trampoline-like dunks as a freshman. He’s still an intriguing long term prospect, but it’s becoming clear that he will need 3-4 years to bring his skill level up to the point where he can effectively utilize his great athletic ability.

Minnesota has a number of quality wings and Williams has been struggling to stay on the floor in recent games. He’s averaging just 6 ppg though his first 7. His minutes per game in his last four have been 20, 16, 11 and 7 and he has scored 6, 2, 2 and 1 in those games. He’s been dealing with an injury, but he also appears to be struggling with consistency.

He’s no longer featured on either mock after being projected as a potential late lottery pick before the season. Williams inability to handle the ball and create offense for himself limits his scoring opportunities. He should focus on developing his 1-on-1 game in the off-season.
