     I believe he is totally right! The player making that type of pass in that motion should deserve the assist if the other player makes the two free throws, I totally agree. Now I have a question, if a player passes the ball from the inbound and another player scores do they credit it an assist?

     If you watched the game last night you might have heard Jeff Van Gundy talking about a rule change. Durant made a good pass to Ibaka, but Ibaka was fouled so Durant was not creditted with the assist. He talked about how if Ibaka makes the 2 free throws then Durant should have been awarded an assist there. I like the idea, but don’t really see a huge need to change the rule. What do you guys think about it?

    Whenever I play 2k I wish that was the rule, but in real life I’m indifferent towards it.

    @Y2G

    I know exactly what you mean in 2K. I play "My Player" as a point guard, and it’s so annoying when you make this nice dish and the player gets fouled, and you get absolutely nothing.

    However that’s a video game, I’m not so sure it should be a real rule, though in some ways it seems fair(from the PG perspective). But if that rule was in place then Chalmers would probably have averaged 20 APG in the finals.

     Agree….in baseball if you field and throw the ball clanly only to have it dropped for an error, you get an assist

    The curve ball, however, is it depends on the accuracy of the free throw shooter, but on the other hand so does a current assist depend on the accuracy of the shooter

    Van Gundy is a breath of fresh air

    On that note, I’ve always thought half assists or 0.5 should be awarded for a player who may have made a nice dish and that person then dished it to someone wide open, I kind of feel like in that situation both should get an assist, at least a 0.5 for the original passer.

    So with that said, I could see 0.5 assist being awarded for a player who passed to someone who got fouled(and they made their free throws). But I think a full assist for something like that would result in some PG’s having abnormally high APG’s.

     When I first started playing basketball in the early fifties, if you touched the ball and it hit the ground, it was considered a dribble…..if you oicked it up and dribbled again, it was a double dribble…..like the old interpretation better……

    and no before some wise guy asks….no we didn’t play with peach baskets

     I agree with Cynthia.  If you give a full assist, players would really see their assist rate skyrocket when opponents intentionally foul their targets late in games.  Plus, fouling is seen as a defensive fault, so passes leading to makes are sometimes more impressive or valuable.  Giving 0.5 an assist is ok, but a full assist is too much.

    In 2k you don’t get absolutely nothing for a pass leading to a foul. They do bump your letter grade rating up about the same amount as when you set a screen. As for a rule change I think they could keep track of a stat like that but don’t call it an assist. It would not be fair to John Stockton when his record would be broken unless they retroactively go back and watch 1000+ Jazz games and so forth and give him .5 assist credits to his total.

    They should just keep the stat of passes leading to a foul because it really isn’t your fault if your teammate doesn’t hit his free throws either.
