Hmm. I did not think Gay would sign back so quickly.

That he signed with the Grizz straight up rather than having them match, but it shows how much they must like him. Maybe the Grizzlies are not all about dumping contracts and actually want to build something. Hey, they have never been as cheap as some other teams, and if they want to sign Rudy to the max, than I am guessing they are also in the process of dumping Randolph. Nonetheless, he has a lot to live up to, and that is a lot of money.

He’s not worth a max contract right now but I think he could be in a year or two.

Me either. I thought he would wait until another big-name free agent signed first, so that he would go with them and try to be their sidekick. He doesn’t have the mentality to be a #1 option, but the Grizzlies gave him #1 option money. I don’t know about this move…

i had a good laugh @ many of the posters on this site who didn’t believe rudy would get paid this much or stay.

i mean, there must’ve been…50-60 people on here who thought he was off elsewhere. i believe the starter of this topic was one of them….have a good day.

Does anybody think they’ll be a playoff team next season?

    At best a 7th or 8th seed.

Gay has proven to be arguably an elite level perimeter scorer. He doesn’t do anything else at the level he’s capable, but he can be a 1st option on a good team. I think him and OJ Mayo can be a good duo, and Mayo could be a perfect 2nd option. This deal is shaky, but I think Gay could live up to it if he keeps scoring well and rebounds and defends more consistently (not a given exactly).

I think they have a shot. They were in the run for a lower playoff seed for the majority of the season. With another year of experience under their belts, and another lottery pick in Xavier Henry (whom I think will contribute earlier than expected), they could definitely win 45+ games.

I thought he said he would wait till the Lebron fiasco is over.

I know you guysa re saying he’s over paid, but when teams have cap room this is what they do. Especially in small markets where they know they are not getting the lebrons and the wades and the bosh’s. Also he would have been over paid in New York anyway when they don’t land Lebron.

I can’t see them making it over the Rockets.

If the Suns keep Amare (longshot) I don’t see the Rockets making it over the Suns.

No way the Spurs/Lakers/Mavericks/Nuggets fall out.

The Blazers/Jazz/Thunders are on the up-and-up.

I don’t think the Grizz have a chance.

If you look at their record..They let alot of 3rd quarter leads get away…Plus they failed to play defense toward the end of some games…Xavier Henry can be a sleeper..They really need his outside shooting..Teams went into zone against them becuz they didnt have reliable outside shooting..Even though Conley was among the league leaders..Outside shooting isnt 1 of his strong points..

There’s only one player from the 2006 class that’s worth the max and that’s Brandon Roy.

Memphis outbid themselves. Gay is getting paid signficantly more than Aldridge and Bargnani… Even Rondo.

I think he asked for a deal that was nearly the same as Andre Iguodala’s to be honest. I think he has to be given time, I think Rudy Gay still has some upside left to live up to his deal. He has the ability to be a better player than he currently is.

Congrats Memphis Grizzlies you had officially overpaid a player who will never win games for his team if hes the best player. Be prepared trying to find takers for trade on his enormous contract in the next 3 years.

He wasn’t even the best player on Memphis this past season. Wow… They overpaid him something signficant. What are they thinking? He shouldn’t be getting paid like Brandon Roy or even Rajon Rondo…

He’s not a player that can carry a team to the playoffs or even fill arenas… I don’t get this move. I was expecting to hear about Durant getting a max extension real soon, not Gay.

History repeats itself again, they should of recalled how the Bulls gave Luol Deng a huge contract , Sixers giving Igoudala superstar money, Detroit paying Gordon, Villaneuva to fill the heavy shoes Chauncey Billups and Rasheed Wallace left. History shows dont pay second option players first option money.

That Rashard Lewis deal was horrible, as well.

they still have to pay oj mayo and marc gasol in the next few years too. this team with this move will have to produce because they wont have cap room for trades or anything. i really like rudy gay and he did get a similar deal to iguodalas and rudy is a better scorer but doesnt do anything else better than iguodala. but its a move they had to make, like someone said a small team like memphis needs to keep its young talent like mayo gay and gasol or they will never be relevant. similar to baseball when they rays signed longoria long term and when the twins signed mauer. and like cleveland with lebron, if they dont keep those players they will never be a contender. small market teams needs to draft well and sign their own talent because other talent most likely isnt coming there(im talking to you minny, memphis, indiana, milwaukee)

I see why they’ve been trying to trade OJ Mayo… His pay day is coming soon too.

I am surprised that they kept him given that Gasol, Mayo, Randoph, and Conley will all either be free agents or eligible for extensions next summer. Now, I suppose the recent dealings with Randolph, the team might change their opinion on him so that he will simply be allowed to leave after next year.
