Pistol Pete. The PelicanParticipantComing from Toronto Rudy Gay was damaged goods.(Quite frankly to most he’s probably still damaged goods) In the first 18 games of the season as a Raptor, Rudy Gay averaged 19.4 points, 7.4 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 1.3 blocks, 1.6 steals, and 37% from three, and 77% from the line, but then came the elephabnt in the room his 39% from the field. He was the most overpaid, most inefficient, and most overrated player in the NBA. He was a ball stopper, who took too many mid range jumpers, and hijacked offenses. What made him seem even worse was the fact that the Raptors have been winning without him, and have actually been playing much better.
Since he’s arrived in Sacramento, the Kings are 6-8 in games he has played, they have looked better offensivelty, defensively, and they are much more entertaining. In 14 games as a King, Rudy Gay is averaging 20.6 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 0.8 blocks, 1.3 steals, while shooting 26% from three, 84% from the line, and most importanly 51% from the field. He’s shooting 57% on two pointers as a King. The only small forwards shooting better are Lebron James and Chandler Parsons. Being able to play off of Cousins and Isaiah Thomas has helped his game.
Rudy’s shooting percentage has risen 5 percentage points since the trade from Toronto while averaging more points. He’s now shooting 44% from the field.
I also think the Rudy Gay ineffieciency train has grown legs that are a tad too big. Rudy Gay has shot under 45% only 2 times in his career. His rookie year and last year. I know the NBA loves using advanced statistics now(which I still think is a bit overrated), but 45% used to be what you wanted a good wing scorer to shoot. The greats shot better but they are the greats for a reason. In today’s NBA your only high usage perimeter players who shoot over 50% are Lebron, D-Wade, Tony Parker, and Chandler Parsons. Bledsoe, Durant, and Stephenson are right below.
Basically i’m saying Rudy is playing much better, and the Kings are actually looking like an NBA team. Demarcus is dominating, Isaiah is cooling off but he has been playing well.

AmiableBaller34ParticipantI understand what you’re trying to say here, but you missed the real elephant in the room, which was his 5 year $82,000,000 dollar contract. People know what they are getting with Rudy Gay, and next year he comes with a $19,000,000 dollar price tag. You say things like "he’s a good wing scorer", and that "The greats shot better but they are the greats for a reason," yet Rudy is getting payed MORE than Kevin Durant, Tony Parker, Chandler Parsons,Stevenson, and Bledsoe. Wade and Lebron are the only players you mentioned who are getting paid more than Rudy Gay (and not by much, might I add), and that’s why a lot of people dislike him.
I like Rudy Gay, he’s a UConn guy, but I think he deserves some of the hate he gets from the real fans. I don’t think he deserves the hate that he was getting from the media, like when there was that article saying some teams wouldn’t even offer him the MLE (that’s a joke I hope), but I don’t see him as a first option type of player, and think he’s on the same level as guys like Jeff Green, Gordon Hayward, and Kawhii Leonard (I haven’t watched the Spurs that much this year, so I’m going off of last year’s Kawhii).

HitsterParticipantRudy was over paid on his current contract and is the 15th highest paid player in the NBA. Next season I’d figure he’ll be about the 12th highest paid guy for which you’d want a franchise type player. Gay is a very good player nearly 10,000 career points at 18ppg but he’s a very good starter/borderline all star at best.
If the Kings could resign him for about $12 to $14 million a year going forward then he becomes much better value.

KayjayParticipantBut when the guy isn’t taking terrible 16-18 footers and an abnormal amount of contested shots he looks like a smooth scorer. And I’ll agree with Hitster if this does work out Kings should look to resign him if he opts out of his current contract going into next year.

HitsterParticipantIf he did opt out then he’d be looking for $15 to $16 million a year. I based the $12 to $14 million on him opting in and that being his realistic market rate. DMC’s new deal kicks in next season but other than that the Kings won’t have anyone else on mega money even with renewing Thomas, so Gay’s $19 million would be a one year only hit.
