They need to make a change in the system so that players don’t keep declaring just because it speeds up the process of getting to their second contract in the league. I offer this idea. One and done/ 19 yo international, means 5 year rookie contract. 2 years/ 20 yo int, 4 year rookie contract. 3+ years/ 21+ yo int, 3 year rookie contracts.

Please stop counting there money because nobody is counting your money.  Let these players make all the money they want or need.

Humor me. Why does this need to happen?

Teams are already in good shape. It’s only 2 years guaranteed now for first rounders with two team options and then they hold the rights to make the same player a restrictive free agent. A lot of the rookies outperform their rookie contracts. There are a lot of bad contracts, but those aren’t rookie deals. I think of Joe Johnson, Kobe, Tristan Thompson, Enes Kanter, Wes Matthews, Varejao.

As a Jazz man, I still dont know how Enes Kanter got that sweet deal.

I’m calling out the guy who made that ruthless James Harden defense video to make a comeback showing all the uncontested layups he gladly gives up….with an encore of wide open teammates he failed to pass to in order to get buckets.

Trying to force a division rival into a tough decision had a a lot to do with Portland giving Kanter that massive offer sheet. Can’t blame Neil Oshey really. If KD & Russ bolt that contract is going to look a lot worse for the Thunder even with the rising cap (Max deal for a sitxh man who doesn’t play 30mins a night?)

Sun Tzu type of gamesmanship with that Kanter offer sheet….. Neil Olshey really pushed Sam Presti into a corner……

And what Olshey did at the NBA trade deadline was brilliant – Sam Hinkie would be proud…… The Blazers were $14 Million Under the cap….. So they would have had to cut a check for $14 Mil & distribute it amongst their roster had they stayed there……..  We all know how this works…

So by picking up Roberts ($4 Mil) & Varejao ($9 Mil) – -they get to just about that $14 Million Number…… And they get a 1st round pick (undisclosed as of right now) from Cleveland for their trouble of taking Varejao’s salary (they’ll cut him reportedly)….. But here’s the Chess instead of Checkers rub…….

By picking up Roberts & Varejao after mid season….. The Trailblazers are Only responsible for paying for the portion of Varejao & Roberts salary that they will spend in a Portland Uni……. In short, on the books it shows they met the obligation for that $14 Million hole…….. but they Only will have to Actually shell out $4 Million…..

So by using his gray matter…… Olshey saved the Portland Franchise $10 Million is real cash money….. that’s the kind of guy I want running my fav team……

I’m not counting their money. I’m saying that I understand why you would hurry to get to the league and start getting paid. It’s common knowledge that the main priority is getting to the second contract as you can make a lot more money. This causes many players with great potential to go pro. I would like to see them stay another year or two in college to improve their game. They get drafted to lottery teams and are expected to lead from day one. You can’t tell me that Okafor wouldn’t be better off with another year under coach K at Duke.

Another idea that accomplishes the same thing is allowing teams to draft players that return to school. You have to start paying them but maybe they still play in college. The money could be set into a trust that they can’t touch until they actually go pro. The key is they get their money and they can develop. I doubt Tim Duncan ever regrets going to college 4 years and I also doubt Kobe Bryant regrets going pro out of high school. Anthony Bennett might regret going pro after one year though, and he went #1. Once you’re getting paid teams want performance and don’t worry about development.

I don’t understand the notion that a kid will become a better basketball player staying in college where he has to worry about college things like class.  As opposed to going to the league where they get the best training,  dieticians,  practice and reps against the best players in the world.  Your argument doesn’t make sense.

What other profession would we even consider saying something along those lines?  It makes no sense.

Don’t buy into the NBA propaganda that young kids are ruining the league.  They aren’t.  That message is spread only in hopes of protecting the owners from making idiotic choices.

I am for increasing the rookie deals proportionally to the salary cap. Since the salary cap is going to go up 70% and rookie deals are staying the same. Example I know it is somewhat rare but Draymond green will have made more than the second pick in his draft because of his three years at about a million plus 15 million this year. A case like this will be more extreme when the max contract is 25 million a year in 2 years for a rookie.

They need to do away with max contracts. It favors the markets and cities so much because teams can only offer so much money. Whats the point of clearing boatloads of cap space if you can only offer the same amount of money as the next team?

It’ll never happen at this point, but I also wish they’d find a way to tone it down on the all the damn options players have. Its gotten ridiculous. I wish teams could offer guys longer deals than five years too. if a team wants to be stupid and give a guy a 10-year deal, let them deal with it. Its up to them to be smart. I hate that the longest term is 5 years. It makes free agency too big of a deal.
