It seems as though Rondo may be forcing the Celtics hand by opting for free agency rather than discussing an extension with Danny Ainge. As the Celtics GM you have two options, play the season out and hope he doesn’t bolt like many star players seem to do, or they could cash out on Rondo and receive as many assets as possible while they can. One idea that popped in my head was a Rondo/Bass for Gasol/1st deal. For the Celtics sake, they would get another lottery pick and receive Gasol’s expiring contract. They could have a plethora of young players via the 2014 Draft that could get a star player such as Love or Aldridge to come over to Boston. For the Lakers, they get their star player to build a foundation around after Kobe decides to hang it up. I know this trade is not likely, but what do you think of the Celtics’ situation regarding Rondo in general? Also, how do you think the situation will actually play out?

I could see the Celtics trading Rondo, but not during the season. I also think people need to understand that with the new CBA, it would be absolutely idiotic for a player to take an early extention right now. That’s why you see other guys like Melo, Bledsoe, Bradley, Hayward, Deng, and Gay all come out and say they are waiting to test free agency before they sign a contract. It’s just the smart thing to do for these guys right now, and I don’t think this is forcing Ainge to do anything.

Ainge has stated many times that he wants to build around Rondo, and that he wants Rondo to be part of the future. Sure that could just be a smoke screen, but Ainge is always looking for the right deal, and some people have speculated that he’s looking to trade for another big time player like Melo, Love, or Durant. Those might all be out of the realm of possibilities, but I think this is the rout that Ainge  is going to try and take.

If Rondo is traded, I could see it being in a sign and trade, kind of like what the Sixers did in this years draft. I also think it depends on the pick the Celtics get. If they get a top 3 pick and get either Embiid, Wiggins, or Parker, than they will probably start all over. If 2007 happens again, and they don’t get a game changer player, than why wouldn’t they keep Rondo and possibly look to package the pick and see if they can land something worthwile.

As a Lakers fan that loves Rondo, I don’t see him being worth a (hopefully) Top 10 Pick in this years’ draft. While I do love Rondo and everything he brings to the table, I dont see if he and Bass are worth a lottery pick in a good draft class with players like Smart or WCS being a realistic option. Of course, I wouldn’t complain much, just question it.

Yeah I know what you mean. I just don’t see the Lakers as a total rebuild mode type team and figured they would be a team that would try to quickly revamp their roster through trade and free agency. I hear Kevin Love is looking to come to LA in 2015 so maybe a Rondo-Love pairing would do the trick over rebuilding at a slower pace.

I’m live in the boston area, so we hear a lot about rondo. I thought he made a statement along the lines of ‘he’d be willing to play in boston another 10 years’ and has been open to contract extensions. The only reason I belive a deal isn’t on the table is Ainge has’t put a deal Rondo likes on the table ala Luol Deng. Unless I’m missing some key recent development in the story.

Has the extension deadline passed yet?

According to Chris Broussard the contract talks didn’t even advance to the point where they were discussing numbers. It seems as though Rondo is determined to enjoy the opportunity to be a free agent. This isn’t a guarantee that he will bolt, but I feel as though it puts the Celtics in a tough situation.

And talks won’t get anywhere due to the new CBA rules limiting financial flexibilty on signing beforehand. The only tough thing the celtics face is putting some pieces in place for him.  A trade for Asik and drafting of Parker/Wiggins to go along with Sullinger and Olynyk. Along with 5 more 1sts over the next couple of years to go along with a coach he likes I don’t think it is tough for the celtics at all. Worse comes to worse he will have very good trade value.
