He is starting to look overrated as he was one of the first players to get cut from the USA U19 team but does he have the potential to be successful at UCONN and get drafted somewhere in the future? I get that he is a little undersized for a SG and he doesn’t even really have the ability to run the point at the college level. I at least see him being better than BJ Young down the road but every year there’s McDonald’s All-Americans who end up not really being anything or nowhere near great. In 2015 him it most likely be him and Ryan Boatright in the same backcourt which I think will be a great backcourt for the Huskies and along with Omar Calhoun they can be a great team in 2015. I see him as a late first rounder at the highest to second rounder with his potential as far as making the NBA.

One of the criticisms that the Team USA staff had about Purvis, at least after the first go around, was that he was too focused on scoring. Supposedly his floor game and decision making are lacking. He can make plays but that comes off of attempts to score. I don’t know how he’ll accomplish it during his redshirt yr, but he has to develop more PG skills. Even if he never completes the transition to the point, at least he’ll come away with a better floor game which will make him more attractive as a combo guard. Maybe he can run point on the scout team in practice, watch a ton a film, I dunno. He’s got a good coach to learn the little things at the PG position. If Ollie didn’t do the little things at the point, he would’ve never been a pro.

His overall floor game needs improvement, he isnt a great shooter, shot creator, passer or ball-handler. He needs to develop something to hang his hat on and build on it, because he struggled when his athleticism wasnt enough to allow him to make plays, especially in the half court game. But he has the groundwork, just needs to work hard and enhance all of his skills.

As a huge NC State fan, let me be the first to say that Purvis has loads of talent. His biggest problem is that he wants to be a point guard but he isn’t a distributor. He is a score first, score second and pass third player and that usually doesn’t work for point guards.

The whole reason why he left NC State was because he wanted to play point but the team already had Tyler Lewis and Cat Barber on the roster.

His attitude will have to improve as well because he doesn’t like coming off the bench and he doesn’t like deferring to other players. He clashed with the veterans on NC State’s squad this last season which was one of the main reasons why the team underachieved so much this season.
