vulture711ParticipantI guess The Pelicans don’t value 1st round picks. Austin Rivers ruined the draft for them

MopgrassParticipantThey actually have to move Eric Gordon or Austin Rivers to make this work financially.
Today will be a busy day.

MisterMordenParticipantThey’re giving away, yet, another future lottery pick! What the hell are they doing?

BA30ParticipantCan someone explain what the advantage is here for the Pelicans? The pick may be extremely protected, but come on. When Houston said during the season that they would only trade Asik for a 1st round pick, I laughed out loud. Why would any team do that? I suppose if a team was trying to dump a player with a longer term contract for Asik being only 1 year they would consider it.

TyroberParticipantI can’t find out how it is protected, but I really like Asik next to Davis. I am not wild about the Pelicans giving out 1st rounders like candy, but they are getting good veterans in return. They traded away 3 1st rounders for Holiday and Asik. They are going to have a lot of talent on that roster next year if they stay healthy. Holiday, Evans, Gordon, Anderson, DAVIS, and Asik.. That is a really nice core to have.

BA30ParticipantAsik is a good defensive player and can score when setup by his teammates, but he can walk after this season. So could easily have given up a 1st rounder for nothing.

The8thDeadlySinParticipantI thought the pick was top 20 protected? Meaning if it is above 20, they keep it.

220ParticipantLast night they were saying the pick was top 20 protected but the linked espn article says the pick is protected 4-19 meaning they keep the pick if its top 3 or in the 20s.

BothTeamsPlayedHardParticipantThe biggest challenge here is that New Orleans is now an expensive team, and we do not know how good they might be. Anthony Davis has two more seasons before he gets paid, and if the pairing of Davis and Asik works out, someone who has been paid will have to go because they are not a candidate to be a tax team. More immediately, they have been a really bad defensive team. Part of that is not realizing Anthony Davis is not a center, but also that he cannot compensate for a team filled with guys who do not appear interested in playing defense. Making sure Davis plays the 4 is a good sign, but it is not the full answer. There is still a danger that New Orleans can look more like Houston with Omer Asik than Chicago. Good team defense is not about guys blocking shots, it is a team effort. The Pelicans led the league in blocked shots, and were as bad as anyone at actually stopping people from scoring. Also, with New Orleans being towards the bottom of the league in the percentage of their baskets off assists, it is more difficult challenge for a lowly skilled player to fit in. Still, I think the greatest positive of it is that it moves their most important player to his best position, and one where he is not giving up a great deal of weight when facing so many teams in the West.
