Why was it last year when Reggie Jackson got his promise we all knew it was to OKC and this year we know nothing about Rivers & Waiters promises?

Do you all think this is kind of weird due to the fact Jackson got his promise at #24 and now we cannot pinpoint where Rivers or Waiters will go?

One link states that Rivers promise is from Toronto and Waiters Phoenix but the thing is how true can this be with Waiters rated higher than Rivers on the boards.

    http://probasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/06/09/report-austin-rivers-has-a-promise-from-a-lottery-team/

I for one believe that Rivers guarantee is between Portland & New Orleans with New Orleans being the one that told him to shutdown workouts because they have 2 lottery picks. The thing with Waiters is he is up in the air because he could go as high as 7 to Golden State since the rumor is out they are looking for a SG.

I don’t quite understand the logic of a promise.  What if Andre Drummond or Bradley Beal or Harrison Barnes fell to the Raptors at #8? (assuming they have made a promise to Waiters or Rivers)

I agree 100%.  What’s the promise contigent on?  If a higher ranked player is also available, who do you take? Hopefully the higher ranked player.

This promise stuff is ridiculous.  My hometown Raptors for instance, if they promise Waiters that they will take him at #8, does that mean they have to release there big board to him and his agent, so that they know who players ranked ahead of him are?

I believe both Rivers and Waiters were promised. I don’t necessarily understand the logic of it either though. Scouts should scout to find out who they really want from all options worth considering. But from watching the combine though I learned that an NBA team is not allowed to reveal who they are drafting before drafting a guy from the Monty William’s interview about Anthony Davis. He just wasn’t allowed to say the Hornets were drafting him. And then there is that question- would a team break a promise? I’m sure it’s happened before.

As far as higher rated on the boards, a couple of GMs have said that most if not all the boards are wrong except for top two picks just about every year. Tose mock drafts are based on what the person making it thinks just like anyone on here wh makes a mock draft board. A couple of picks are from whispers. As far as Jackson, it’s no different than hearing about a trade before it happens, some teams can keep a secret while others can’t and the fans know in advance

I get the promise from a standpoint that helps some players keep their name in the draft (but even then it can’t possibly be unconditional).

I don’t get it once the player has to stay in the draft.  Does it really matter where aplayer gets drafted?

Maybe this is just a conspiracy against the airline industry as players shutdown/limit workouts once they get a promise.

I was referring to the rumors that have been swirling on the forum that Mark Jackson may have promised Rivers. If he can promise Rivers why not Waiters if he is rated higher on the boards.

It just seems a little off that the link states Waiters promise is from Phoenix.

It’s nothing major, someone had brought the idea up of Mark Jackson liking Rivers on the forum.

After trading for Monta, the Bucks might be the only team for whom it makes LESS sense to take Rivers than the Warriors.

I actually like the thought of Rivers under Jackson which makes plenty sense to me that he would go for a coaches son.

The bucks obviously could want to get bigger in the backcourt and I wouldnt be surprised if Jennings is traded for a.lottery pick( maybe 6 or 8) and Ellis moves to PG… So Rivers may make alot more sense then we think…

Movis Ellis to the point makes zero sense. He isn’t a pg he’s a sg, scorer. Just like you dont see miami moving Dwade to the PG. Ellis thinks shoot first second and third.

As far as Rivers getting a promise while being lower on a mock draft board i will say once again, the mock draft board has nothing to do with what the GMS/Teams think. Whoever gave him a "promise" obviously thinks Rivers is better than some ranked ahead of him

Rivers in GS gives them the exact same problem Monta did, and with last year’s lotto pick looking good playing that exact position…

Why would GS have the same problem with Rivers when he has a SG height? (monte did not and Monte didn’t have the same potential as a defender

Rob Pelinka represents both Waiters and Drummond. Rivers and Jared Sullinger are both represented by David Falk. If one assumes the agents aren’t going to bother having a client waste his time meeting with or working out for a team he knows is "promised" to another player (Portland and Houston exempted because of multiple picks), then the list of possible promises can probably get narrowed down over the next week or so.

Because length is more important than height and Rivers still lacks that.  Rivers is also extremely ball dominant and GS wants the ball in Curry’s hands.
