TarHeelRavenParticipantI’m sure you’ve all heard the story about Richie Incognito supposedly harassing and threatening Jonathan Martin to the point where Martin had to leave the team. Incognito denies the verbal abuse. There is evidence on twitter he threatened Martin’s life, made him pay for trips to Vegas costing 30 thousand dollars along with other rookies and calling him the “n” word and telling Martin he was going to kill him. I know hazing goes on in the NBA, but has anybody ever heard of anything this bad? There’s playing pranks and making rookies stand up and do embarrassing skits and then there’s this stuff. Pretty sad and very scary.

GrandmamaParticipantWhat happened here wasn’t hazing. It was flat out bullying.

frogmanParticipantEveryone knows that Incognito is a downright twat but I feel he has become somewhat of a scapegoat. If all these allegations are proved correct more people need to take the fall for allowing this to happen. Where is the leadership in this team? Philbin has failed at his job. And then we have Tanehill stating that if you asked Martin two weeks ago who his best friend on the team with he would have said Incognito. I don’t have too many mates that threaten to kill my mother, racially abuse me or extort me to go partying in Vegas. I hope the whole truth comes out very soon but this is beyond ugly now.
I just feel really sorry for Martin. I don’t know how he comes back from this but I hope he does.

GlenTaylorSucksParticipant1) He probably did. 2) What are the options here: you fight him? You risk alienating yourself away from your teammates and coaches, and the bullying will escalate. You tell a coach? Same deal. Plus, you run the risk of losing your job. He did the right thing by walking away, and I’d argue that’s more courageous and manly than fighting back.

GlenTaylorSucksParticipantI’ve lost a lot of respect for them with their coverage of this. They seem to be going out of their way to justify Incognito’s actions by directly or indirectly blaming Martin. “He should have fought (Richie) like a man,” “He shouldn’t have been such a wuss,” “The NFL locker room is not like the average workplace,” “The coaches couldn’t have known about this,” “It’s ok if Richie refers to us as n****s,” “Richie’s like a brother…” and so on. As someone who’s been the victim of bullying, the fact that the media insists on justifying it rather than condemning it is so damn upsetting. Doesn’t matter how big or how strong you are, bullying can rip a person apart. The bottom line is, this went above and beyond “typical” hazing. Incognito, and anyone else complicit in the behavior, needs to be punished accordingly.

GottaBeTheShoesParticipantI’m surprised you had any respect left for ESPN. It’s extremely unfortunate they’re in such a position that they control the sports world and there is really nothing we can do about it. Even other sports reporting channels and sites just copy off of ESPN and report the exact same sh!t. They turned Manziel into a public enemy when he’s just an immature party kid that doesn’t play by others rules and made him the embodiment of “everything wrong with kids these days”. They always have the most odd sources and it’s hilarious when they completely change a fact because some random source they found was completely incorrect.
As for the Incognito thing, We don’t really know what was the real relationship between them. Even if they were actually good friends or Martin was like his little brother, what Incognito did went way too far and was way out of line. But the problem is Martin showed weakness and the ability to be pushed around and that’s where a bully strikes (and in no way is this fair to Martin of course). I saw a magazine page where Incognito was asked the question a while back about who the easiest teammate to scare was and it was Martin so that really shows you his character and how strongly this “bullying” was. If other Dolphins players are actually lying about his behaviour or rather don’t see the entire behind the scenes then it’s extremely sad to see how poor that team is at being a “team”. Another thing I don’t understand is why after all these cuts and being kicked off the team for it, No one has tried to get Incognito help (or at least we haven’t heard about it), this is a grown man who is being far beyond a bully and he clearly needs help because there has to be an underlying issue he has to enact this sort of behaviour.

I get the feeling that Martin may have been everybody’s whipping boy and now he’s pissed them all off by going public with this.

llperezincognito is a pos. Ive only read the one message transcript where he spews hatred. ANd that alone is enough to tell me he is an ass. But damn if martin isn’t the biggest sissy every. I really don’t feel sorry for him. A man will have to kill me before he threatens my mother and makes me pay thousands of dollars for stuff I don’t want to. I think both might have had their careers come to an end here, nfl linemen come along all the time, locker room distractions are never good.

frogmanParticipantRighto keyboard warrior. Richie Incognito is a legit sociopath and has been his whole life. I can guarantee you would not do a thing to him. Now I understand Martin is a 325lb behemoth but all these heroes all over the internet saying they would have stood up to Incognito not only has to deal with Incognito but by all accounts he is the ringleader in the lockeroom and that risks alienating himself from his teammates.
I’m so sick of people saying they would have just started throwing punches at Incognito when no one knows the real situation.

SiggyParticipantThe situation’s too murky for me to even have an idea what exactly transpired. I think everyone just jumped to the conclusion that Martin was bullied before the other side of the story came out.
Incognito might be a POS, but nobody knows the context of those messages, we just read the transcripts. Was he really bullying him? Was he talking sht to one of his friends (Tannehill did describe their relationship as being friends)? I don’t know how you interact with your friends, but I know I say some pretty vile sht to my friends in jest. I hear similar stuff in return and its all good because that’s just our humor.
——————————————
NFL Media’s Albert Breer obtained a transcript of that voice mail, which directed threats and a racial slur toward Martin. Wide receiver Brian Hartline indicated Wednesday the voice mail needs more context.“This is the same guy that was laughing about this voice mail at one point in time, first of all,” Hartline said of Martin. “Second of all, I believe that if you look through the whole voice mail, there’s some things said that you probably shouldn’t say in general, friends or not friends. But I know for a fact, that I’ve said things to my friends that I kind of wish I’ve never said to, either.”
———————————————All I know for sure is that one player was kicked off the team, the other voluntarily left… and the teammates are backing the player who got kicked off.

Meditated StatesParticipantHow strong or tough. A serious fight would have gone down. The kids a b!+€h. Hazing is not cool. Does not foster positive energy or friendship. Resentment and anger is all its good for. I would recommend no one deal with it. You need to earn your teammates respect through play and personality not be their b!+€h.

Malik-UniversalParticipantactually on sports center today they had a reporter who used to cover the dolphins and he said that incognito was a very popular figure in the locker room while Martin wasn’t at all which had me thinking that there teammates feel either threatened by incognito or everyone’s saying they were friends so they won’t have to take a leadership responsibility… I just don’t know how u talk to ur “best friend” like that and treat them….everyone in the organization did a pretty crappy job in handling this

All that I’ve heard and read so far about this story makes me think that Incognito has a better shot at getting another job in the NFL than Martin. It doesn’t sound like Martin is cut out for that type of atmosphere.

IndianaBasketballParticipantBy “that” type of atmosphere, do you mean the Dolphins atmosphere or the overall NFL atmosphere? I don’t think every team’s atmosphere in the NFL is going to be like what’s going on in the Dolphin’s locker-room.

SiggyParticipantThe overall NFL atmosphere. I’m willing to bet this type of stuff happens in most, if not all, NFL locker rooms. It’s a sport filled with meatheads and testosterone. I’m not putting the sport down. Love the game, but I think that players being on edge and having a mean streak is almost mandatory.
From everything that I’ve read, Martin was shy, quiet, stand-offish, sensitive and socially awkward. NFL players, especially offensive linemen who basically fight every snap, shouldn’t have to be told to toughen up. O-linemen should not have to be coerced to at least open up to the guys who are in the trenches next to them.

IndianaBasketballParticipantThere’s another report out on Icognito that he was arrested for battery just last year.
[The accuser] states that Mr. Incognito used his golf club to touch her by rubbing it up against her vagina, then up her stomach then to her chest. He then used the club to knock a pair of sunglasses off the top of her head. After that, he proceeded to lean up against her buttocks with his private parts as if dancing.”
How is anybody defending this guy?

SiggyParticipantLike I said, he very well may be a POS, but the above isn’t the issue here. The issue is whether he did what was accused of doing to Martin. The third parties who were close to the situation and were witnesses to their interactions say no.
Neither are on the team anymore, yet Incognito’s former teammates are defending him and are questioning Martin’s actions.0 - Posted on: Thu, 11/07/2013 - 3:58pm #848255
