JV’s_pump_fakeParticipantI have a question for those more knowledgeable with contract workings…
So if the Raptors don’t have Bird Rights for Biyombo (only played one season for them and then presumably opts out) and wish to re-sign him as well as offering a max deal to DeRozan can they do it?
It’s my understanding that without a players Bird Rights, you can’t exceed the cap to re-sign them.
If you re-sign Biyombo FIRST and then give DeRozan the max (because they DO hold his Bird rights), you signed Bismack with your cap space and then went over the cap to keep DeRozan.
Is this possible?
If so, you’d be able to sign your drafted players with the 9th and 27th picks (one being an immediate starter at the 4; the other being a developmental prospect) and be set for next season.
Thoughts?

J_01ParticipantI read this from a Raptors beat reporter’s tweet that if the Raptors did that route then you’d have to renounce Demar’s bird rights and then you can’t sign him back for the max.
I also read today that the way to resign Bismack is probably by trading Ross which would open up enough cap space to offer him a 4yr 58m deal which would be closer to his max which would be about 4yr 70m.
Not really 100% sure how the cap works its really complicated but these are some things that I have read about the Bismack situation.

bmac697ParticipantAs a raptors fan who loved watching Bismarck these playoffs I think he’s gone. I’m confident we will resign derozan to the max, which honestly don’t think he’s worth all that money in comparison to others but that’s today’s NBA. We really need a better stretch four who can also defend. I’m hoping we draft Davis as replacement for biyombo. A question I asked my friends and hypothetical of course but if you had to pick between demar or horford who would you pick? We already got money tied up in Ross who I don’t really like, Powell is up and coming so honestly why tie up 25 million for a player who shots in the 30% he’s lucky he got better as playoffs went on cause honestly if he didn’t pick it up id say see ya later.

OhCanada-ParticipantI think he’s staying and the Raps find a way to retain this team. Im not sure how I feel about it though but either way we are maxed out so its fine to me. Can’t they just resign him to say a 4 yr $56 mil deal paying $8mil yr 1, $12 yr2, $16 yr3, $20 yr 4 or something along those lines then max out Derozan.

PaulsJayhawksParticipantAs much as I love the Biz and he’s fun to watch because of the passion you can’t have that much money tied up in the c position. You can fill a back up center role with a seasoned vet for much less.
Im more concerned with the starting power forward position. Scola is gone,Patterson is good off the bench but not a starter, Raps are in win now mode. I’d don’t see any pf who can come in and contribute right away that’s in the draft..Chriss.Davis, skal are projects..sabonis and Ellison I’m not sold on..
I hope they re sign Derozan as that means he really is a team guy when he could have gone home to La..that shows me a lot of respect. Raps need a stretch 4 as Derozan and Caroll are not the greatest 3 pt gunners.
The guy I’d like to see the raps go after is Ryan Anderson who I think would be a great fit beside Val. I’m not a cap guy so I don’t even know if getting Anderson is possible.

smithers3551ParticipantThey can depending on exactly what the cap is next year and exactly how much biz wants. If the cap goes up by 20 million like expected then they would have somewhere around 12 to 14 million available without renouncing the bird rights on derozan

ExumInfernoParticipantNo chance, it is one or the other.
Cap holds, first round draft pick money, D Carroll’s huge contract, unless the Raptors dump players for no money then they can only get one of those players back unless one or both take a lot less money.
Valancuinas jumps up in salary by around $10million now, so Bismack won’t be a huge priority for them as other teams have huge amounts of money to spend and someone will offer him a lot.
As was mentioned, trading away Ross would help the Raptors a lot. It would be good if they tried Jonas and Bismack on the court together, great size and Valanciunas is trying to extend his shooting range, but it doesn’t look like that will happen.
That was some bad GM work, overpaying Ross and Carroll and now being left with no room to do things.
