torontoraptors10ParticipantJust saw this on twitter:
WojYahooNBA Adrian WojnarowskiToronto has let go of Jay Triano as coach, the team says.SpearsNBAYahoo Marc J. SpearsRaps decline option on coach Jay Triano for next season. Triano will be retained as a special assistant to the president and GM.
Good move on Toronto’s part! Hopefully we can get a good coach, I have a hunch P.J Carlesimo will take his place.
Who do you think the Raptors should hire?

The White MambaParticipantSomeone who actually knows the meaning of defence hopefully.

HotSnotParticipantI’d love to see the Raps get a coach who will hold players accountable… IE the game is about playing both sides of the floor. Hopefully the next coach will bring Bargs off the bench if he continues to slack on D.

R-Dot-13ParticipantI should coach them

DemarDerozanParticipantI think it would be sweet if Jerry Sloan came in and coached the raptors, i really like jay triano, but for if jerry sloan came and coached.. the raptors would finally have a legit coach on the sidelines

Bossy13Participant10 million a year for five years to get Sloan out of retirement. Thanks to salary cap restrictions in the nhl, MLSE has a ridiculous amount of money that they cant spend on the Leafs so why not spend some of it on a coach for the ball team?

6-6-6-lolParticipantI strongly agree with R Dot 13

Pro 1ParticipantWhy would BC want D’Antoni? He knows jack sh*t about defense.lol
Jay Triano is BC’s puppet aka Company Man so it’s no surprise that he’s moving up into the front office with BC after leading the Rap’s to being the worst defensive team in the NBA 2 years running.
Bob McAdoo (My choice, current Heat assistant)
Rick Adelman (rumored to be a candidate for PO GM)
Mike Woodson
Lawrence Frank
Brian Shaw
Jeff Van Gundy
Sam Mitchell (stranger things have happened)
Dwane Casey (current Mav’s assistant)
Bill Laimbeer
Mo Cheeks
Alex English
Mike Dunlevy
Mark Jackson
Just don’t hire PJ Carlisemo as the head coach he’s not a good fit. Sloan & Brown too old.imo

irish78ParticipantWho ever gets this job has a very difficult task at hand.
I just don’t understand why BC would keep Jay on staff (and why he’d agree to stay) when he’s essentially said to him "you’re not good enough, but do you want to help me as a special assistant?"
Strange Huh?

irish78ParticipantI like those picks; I think Casey, English and Jackson are strong possibilities. McAdoo would makes sense too

xavier328ParticipantRaps Front Office seems to have some type of fav since they let Triano go.
Cant see Larry Brown coaching in Tor..
Mark Jackson(Should be number one on the list)
Ettore Messina (Been rumored that he would join the coaching staff not sure as a HC)
Kelvin Sampson (hear his name being thrown around alot…Minn and Houston)
Mike Budenholzer( will be a NBA Head Coach sooner or later)
Brain Shaw( i want him back coaching our offensive)
Lawrence Frank(great basketball mind and pretty good defensive Coach)

EuroBallParticipantNow the Raptors need a really head coach like Mark Jackson or someone who wants to get back into coaching.

JMoney31Participantalready read that theres no way the d’antoni will be there and im pretty sure i just saw on the raps site that P.J Carlesimo is definatly not an option. They definatly need to go with a veteran coach, Sloan would be great but highly unlikely, i wouldn’t be overly surprised if Frank ends up with it. Apparently they want to fill the spot by the draft, so im sure things will get moving soon.

NashyMingParticipantI am surprised that they decided to let go of Jay Triano. I am happy that they keep him around as a special assistant. Jay is a nice guy but he just wasn’t good enough to be a head coach. I am very happy that PJC wouldn’t be considered. PJC had been a disaster everywhere he had been head coach. I would rather give a chance to an unproven rookie coach than to a proven failure like PJC.
Rick Adelman won’t come as he likes to stay in west coast and he wouldn’t come to a lottery team. I can’t imagine Jerry Sloan going anywhere beside Utah.
I think they should consider:
Mark Jackson – was a Raptor and was hyped to be a good head coach candidate, no coaching exp
Bill Laimbeer – my personal favorite as he’s a tough, smart, hustling player in his play day and a winner. A year as assistant coach on the Twolves. Won 3 championships as head coach in WNBA.
Mike Budenholzer – seems very interesting candidate given his pop’s connection.
Elston Turner – Rick Adelman’s right hand man
Ettore Messina – legendary coach in Europe, but I think it would be better if he spent time as assistant coach in NBA before going for a head coach job as Euro ball and NBA ball are very different. Also, Euro players are usually more team oriented where NBA players are usually more individual. Messina may find it much harder to handle ego in the NBA.
Definitely don’t want:
1) Larry Brown – he’s too old school for today NBA, too stubborn to deal with today’s players. Too out spoken to publicly trash talk his own players to gain respect
2) Mike D’Antoni – his no D approach just won’t win in playoff
3) Mo Cheek – a soft player coach, I am not sure if he’s a fit
Not sure:
1) Brian Shaw – nobody has successfully implement the triangle offense aside from Phil Jackson. The Raptors do not have the players that work in Triangle.
2) Smitch – I don’t credit him to develop any players. He was a pretty terrible coach with the Raptors.
3) Casey – never got going, didn’t get alone with his players when he was a head coach.
4) Mike Dunleavy – overrated as a coach, too much trouble.

adumParticipantWhy are all you guys on mark jackson?
Is it me or does Mark Jackson seem like he has no where near the basketball iq that Jeff has.
He was a hof point guard which is a very important position so I see him being an average coach but nothing more.
Jeff is known for his defense and he could mild all of these players into defenders maybe even bargnani loooool
Jeff should be #1 all of the other coaches are offensive minded and that’s not what Toronto needs.0 - Posted on: Wed, 06/01/2011 - 4:36pm #538903

NashyMingParticipantFrankly, I don’t know much about Mark Jackson. He seems to be all hyped. It’s hard to tell whether he would become a good coach.
JVG is a very good coach, but I am not sure if he would leave the booth to coach the current Raptors.

omphalosParticipantRubio coming over and Triano fired in the same day? Things in the NBA are starting to right themselves! Let’s just see if we can get rid of Rambis today too… I agree that JVG and Adelman should be on the top of the candidates list, but it’s also unlikely either take the job, particularly Adelman as has been mentioned.
One person I think would be a great fit is Mike Woodson; the Raptors need a defensive coach who can develop their young talent, and Woodson did a great job turning the Hawks into a playoff team. I don’t see why he couldn’t do the same here for a few years until the team is promising enough for a big gun coach to take over and lead them to contender status; a bit like the Del Negro to Thibs transition.
0 - Posted on: Wed, 06/01/2011 - 5:56pm #538950

torontoraptors10ParticipantFor a big transition I think the Raptors need a coach like JVG, Mike Budenholzer, Lawrence Frank or Rick Adelman to have a major change.
0 - Posted on: Wed, 06/01/2011 - 6:04pm #538952

omphalosParticipantI agree with you 100%, but they need to lay the foundation for that sort of coach to find the Raptors appealling. Of them all I think JVG would be most likely to come over right now, only because the way he’s been talking lately he seems to have the coaching bug.
But again, I’d be happy with Woodson as a temporary compromise to begin the process.

suddsParticipantThanks goodness it’s about time. I’ll take Brian Shaw since the Lake show is too dumb to give him the respect. Sloan and Van Gundy just ain’t going to happen. Really though I agree we are in transition, so it’s wide open, as long as it’s a big enough name that they will command respect from would be free agents, and our players.
0 - Posted on: Wed, 06/01/2011 - 6:38pm #538960

NashyMingParticipantI am not sure Brian Shaw would work out. Nobody has ever successfully implemented the triangle offense beside Phil Jackson and Brian Shaw probably just gonna try with the Triangle Offense. We saw quite a few coaches failing to do so, such as Kurt Rambis. Kurt Rambis was more highly rated than Brian Shaw and so far he’s failing with the TWolves. The triangle offenese required specific talent and needed to be customized depending on the players. Its very tough to have the triangle working as intended.
I think Brian Shaw might have success with the Lakers because they are already running triangle offense so he should have no problem to continue it. However, I don’t see any other team that can let a rookie coach to successfully implement the triangle, most likely Shaw would also fail with a head coach gig outside of Lakers.

Jazz_ItalyParticipantRaps need a coach to make them improve on D.
A Coach with a lot of experience and charisma
But let me say that Bryan Colangelo is horrible as Gm: he says one thing and then do another one…he’s the greatest problem for the Raps

Tha_PrinceParticipant"I have spoken to Lonnie Cooper (Carlesimo’s agent) very briefly following the conclusion today, that Jay would not return as head coach and I did inform him that P.J. would not be considered a candidate at this time," Colangelo said.
"When P.J. was first recruited into the organization, I wanted everyone to be clear that I was not hiring him to be Jay’s ultimate replacement," Colangelo said. "What we were looking to do was amp up Jay’s staff, amp up defensive focus and effort and that was the sole purpose of bringing P.J. in. I think the world of P.J. as a coach. His 38 years of experience is certainly something that bodes well, but given the makeup of this team and the direction we want to go, I have concluded that P.J. will not be a candidate."
So with PJ not being our head coach I’d like to see:
1) Jeff Van Gundy
2) Lawrence Frank
3) Brian Shaw
4) Mark Jackson (won’t get it though, Colangelo wants experience)

mikeyvthedonParticipantHe was a great passer, solid player, DO NOT WANT HIM COACHING THE RAPS! Maybe if I lived in Toronto, I would not care, maybe I am biased towards his awful commentating and incredibly annoying catch phrases, but why is he suddenly at the top of everyones coaching list? He spent how many years as an assistant coach? He shows what insight into basketball other than saying incredibly obnoxious things and he and Van Gundy not agreeing on things that Jeff is usually right about?
I used to hate JVG, but he actually has knowledge of the game and coaching experience. While I would not necessarily die for him to be a team I am associated withs coach, he is light years ahead on my list over Mark Jackson. He coached two teams well and I think would be respected by the basketball community more so than Jackson. Yes, Mark played in the league, that is always a huge bonus in gaining your players respect, but that only gets you so far with them if they do not start winning.
Brian Shaw would be a great candidate, though at the same time I am not crazy about Lawrence Frank. Larry Brown would be perfect, but would he want to come to Toronto? For whatever people say about Larry chopping teams up and trying to get immediate impact over building towards the long term, well, if I am a Raptors fan, I am cool with that. This team has been in a rut for a while, and I am fine with Larry trading whoever he wants to get us out of it. Obviously we would hope to keep DeRozan and Davis, but I doubt he would be looking to trade them anyway. So, if I could get Larry Brown, he sits atop my list.
Honestly, I just think the team needs a change, and as long as the coach is not Mark Jackson or Leo Rautins, I will be happy. Glad they are keeping Triano on as a consultant, really respect his work with Team Canada, but I do not think he was the long term answer for the Raptors and it is better to deal with it now than later. Frank Vogel seemed like he did a great job, and I would give him a strong look as Indiana appears to be looking in a different direction. Also, one person I have always wanted to be given a chance as a head coach, and has been dying to do so is Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Dead serious. Why has no one given Kareem a chance to run a team? He has been around coaching for ages and is an incredibly inspiring leader. Is is politics? Might be, but either way, Kareem would be one of my first choices if I had to interview a coach.
