RUDEBOY_ParticipantWhen former Clippers owner made those racist remarks alot of people said he wasn’t the only sports owner that had those beliefs…It seems that Bruce Levenson have offered to sell his stake in the Atlanta Hawks after a racist email he sent in 2012 has come to light..
The Atlanta Constitution Journal obtained a copy of that email…Here is a portion of the e-mail Levenson sent to Danny Ferry…My theory is that the black crowds scared away the whites and there is simply not enough affluent blacks to build a significant fan base..Please don’t get me wrong..There is nothing going on around the arena,i have never felt uncomfortable, but i feel that southern whites don’t feel comfortable in an arena or bar where they are the minority..On fans sites i read comments about how dangerous it is around Phillips Arena..In my 9 years i’ve never heard of a mugging or pick-pocketing ..This is just racist garbage…And when i hear people saying it’s in the wrong pace, its just code words for there are too many blacks..
I have been open with our executive team about these concerns..I want white cheerleaders while i dont care what color the artist is,i want music that is familar to a 40 year old white guy,if thats our season ticket demo..I have also balked when every fan picked out of the crowd to shot shoots in a contest is black,i have also bitched because the kiss cam is too black…
Atlanta Hawks owner Bruce Levenson to sell team after racist email http://www.cnn.com/2014/09/07/us/atlanta-hawks-owner-bruce-levenson-racist-email/index.html?sr=sharebar_twitter

Anton123ParticipantWell, there’s nothing racist about the e-mail. It’s just ABOUT racism. He pretty much says he himself hasn’t got a problem with black people and that they are obviously not mugging anyone, but that white fans in Atlanta think otherwise. It’s a purely business-oriendted e-mail.
I think forcing him to sell the team is preposterous and I hope he has other reasons besides this why he’s doing it.

HobbyOGParticipantHe released this e-mail his self to try and sell the team faster. Excuses…Atlanta is not a basketball town, it’s a football city. Whites, blacks, its not about race! The Atlanta Thrashers games were 99.9% white and there games were empty and they didn’t make money that’s why they left! Hawks should move to Seattle..This is coming from an ATLien, we don’t care about the Hawks, people come and cheer for the other team.

TopShottaParticipantIt seems like he is just pointing out that the white fanbase he is trying to attract is racist. The only thing that seems borderline racist is the whole kiss cam thing and even that seems to be based off of things that freak his desired white fanbase out.

ph90702Our society has become so pussified that it’s disgusting. Nobody can say anything about race without being labeled a racist.

doubledribblerParticipantIt is not racist (not saying he is or is not, though doubt it), but I wonder how and why this is coming out. He is probably going to completely avoid any mess and just cash out on the team because we all know he is going to make more than whatever he put in for the team. I wouldn’t step down, but some people would rather avoid the drama. The quicker he steps up, apologizes and gets out the less time for anyone to mount attacks against him or to start digging in his personal life.
If anything this is a poor reflection of the fans if this is how they feel. Sounds like he is looking to maximize how much money the team can make. We are talking about Atlanta. They struggle with attendance even when they have good teams.

MopgrassParticipantSounds like there’s just a racial divide in the audience and he was trying to solve it from a business perspective. Maybe there’s something we’re missing. Maybe he wants to cash out anyway and saw how how much Sterling got when people rushed in to buy and save the Clippers from a racist.

ahuang16ParticipantThe first part of the email seems to be fine, he is just expressing a thought about why white fans may not be attending the games. The second part is what would force him to sell the team. Maybe it’s best for him to step out of the spotlight before this gets out of hand.

NeggedAlterEgosAlterEgoshould it matter? its. racist because no black person ever thinks oh my its to many whites at a ball game or cheering or on the kiss cam and no non racists white person would ever complain about blacks being at or participating in basketball events.
how about this San Antonio is bigger then atl and their crowds are multi race mixed and packed…how about the hawks win more…
the twolves will be a lottery team and are sold out of season tickets already
how about the hawks get more marketable. players.
yes this was a racist statement…..nobody asked him to sell his team he decided to on his own .stern had a history. of racism and treated his players aweful….and said some mean hurtful tthing’s. that should have never came out but did on tape.
i dont think. the hawks should. be sold because of this

AwardedBallerParticipantIdk if I should throw this in here but I am african-american and I don’t really see this as racist. It completely comes off as a business email that is about improving demographics. I’d see the email as racist if he was insulting black cultures but he was somewhat speaking on behalf of how white people in atlanta probably think and he was kinda spot on.
Nowadays, I feel like white people cannot speak on any racial matter without facing some sort of critcisim or punishment, if Michael Jordan said this trying to get more black fans, there would be no problem. But I can see why the NBA would react like this coming off the heels of the Donald Sterling situation.

IndianaBasketballParticipantThere’s nothing wrong to say you want more blacks, whites or any other race at games… Every owner should want EVERYONE at games. However, it’s insensitive to say you *think* a certain race is scaring others away. It’s very insensitive to say you "balk" every time a black person is selected to shoot shots or you &$#%#&@! because the kiss cam is too black.
Those are just dumb comments to make, especially in a corporate e-mail. As a marketing major, I know there are better and more sensitive ways to discuss race when it comes to marketing and demographics.

drpg913ParticipantI also don’t see anything racist about his comments. I think that there is something fishy going on I advise everyone to avoid Stephen A. Smith as much as possible this week. He is going to be the guy that ESPN goes to for commentary and he is only a representation of ESPN and himself.

goodsontheParticipantThere’s nothing racist about trying to appeal and cater to an audience that is not comfortable being around black Americans… Oh ok.
There’s also nothing wrong with the kiss cam being "too black"?
"I have also balked when every fan picked out of the crowd to shot shoots in a contest is black"….
And oh my damn…. "By focusing on race, I also sent the unintentional and hurtful message that our white fans are more valuable than our black fans."
Nothing racist at all about anything he said tbh

AwardedBallerParticipantYou’re being a little too sensitive lol, he clearly stated in the email that he personally doesn’t have a problem with any of these things but he’s noticed the Atlanta 35-55 white demographic (the NBA’s #1 Season ticket holding demographic) could have a problem with it thats why they’re not buying as many tickets. He wasn’t trying to value one race over the other, just questioning why a certain one wasn’t buying tickets.

TallmanNYCParticipantHe is cataring to that racist sensibility. Back during segregation days restaurant owners would say they personally have no problem serving blacks, but since some of their customers didn’t like them, that no blacks were allowed in the restaurant. So this is not a very courageous email on the part of the owner.

so i take it you want to be a young kevin hart. how about this you email the hawks owner and tell him you have and idea to bring in white fans . At halftime you should run a comedy show appealing to the white fans like the guy from Seinfeld because what you said was extremely funny young kevin hart YOUR KILLING IT.

MopgrassParticipantYour thesis was that when you stop loving the game, it allows things like racism to come through. Got it.
However, it takes the reader twice as long to read when you have sentences like, "Eat teams… so just" and "Money… these." Judging from your response you could clearly make your writing comprehensible. Perhaps you should just fire your phone.

HitsterParticipantGiven the history of racial problems in the Atlanta area, it seems a very naive at best point to make, at worse it is racist.
A fan goes to the game to support their team, some teams will have fan bases of different ethnic groups depending on where they are based.
As you all may know I’m UK based so I’m not sure how US sports breakdown in terms of ethnic groupings supporting what sport but I’ve always seen basketball as perhaps having a higher black following than other sports. Please correct me if I’m wrong.

Like it was said above though… This guy clearly wants to sell the his share of the team. Goodbye and don’t let the door hit your ass on the way out. Hopefully, they get an owner in there who actually has real marketing ideas to diversify the arena and get all fans of Atlanta to support the team.

Memphis MadnessParticipantWhites in Atlanta WILL buy tickets as long as Larry Bird is lighting up the Hawks for 60.
I want to say that Memphis has done a pretty good job with a balance, but LOTS of it has to do with the team being really good. ALSO, we started off the franchise with a few really good white players like Pau Gasol, Jason Williams, and Mike Miller, but we also had the local guy in Lorenzen Wright, plus Shane Battier who EVERYBODY liked and had that Duke pedigree.
In the past few years we have built a diverse core with Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph with Tony Allen as our X factor. We have also brought back Shane Battier and Mike Miller for a few more cups of coffee. Then we go out and draft a local kid in Jarnell Stokes. Our team is DIVERSE, and yeah having a good white player probably helps a lot. But, Z Bo basically owns the town as far as sports go, and he really helps sell tickets. And, when it came down to trading either Z Bo or Rudy Gay, we traded Rudy because fans identified with Zach more even though Rudy was younger. … couldn’t piss off some of the fan base by trading Z Bo after his heroic playoff performances.
The team got a lot of heat for firing Lionel Hollins. We recovered though (probably) but if we had traded our core then we would have been in trouble.
The Grit ‘n Grind thing here has really worked. We have BOTH Marc and Zach. Some hard working guys. And, Mike Conley is a class act.
I think the Hawks should pattern themselves after Memphis. Lots of the same issues. And the Grizzlies stadium is downtown too.
The Hawks haven’t been "relevant" though in a long time.
If I were them, I would go after some marketable guys.
Hey, the racial thing is probably while the Hawks paid Jon Koncak way too much back in the day. Could be why Kyle Korver is on the team, too.
The Hawks really could have used a guy like Wiggins or Jabari to build around. That would have helped. Fans LOVE good teams. If the team is not good though, apathy will reign.

TyroberParticipantI live in Georgia and have been to a lot of Hawks games and there always seems to be a good amount of white people there. I am white, but maybe there it a lot more black people and I didn’t realize it… It’s not like I went in there and started counting the numbers of different races. I will say that I was just to a braves game last week and being in Atlanta after 10 at night doesn’t look like the safest place, but that could be said for any major city while I am walking back to my car. This really just seems like a frustration email with the owner was voicing concerns about how he could get more white people at the game to put more money in his pocket. He was trying to understand why there are more black people at his game and was trying to offer solutions. But maybe all this for just so he could sell his team because I don’t see why people should be calling for him to sell.

tuck243ParticipantI’ll just piggy back on some of the things some ppl here already said, Atlanta has a huge fan base that is dedicated to the Falcons and the Braves. That’s the main reason the Hawks aren’t appreciated. Also, JA gave a stat that showed majority of NBA fans are BLACK at 49%… So, there’s another fact to relay to this terrible a$$ man… Clearly he just shouting these things without doing proper research and using society stereotypes to make it happen… But before I continue how wrong his facts were lets discuss how majority of you in this thread are misinformed.
For starters, PLEASE learn the definition of racism before you say this email isn’t racist. Because it IS… You have a white OWNER that doesn’t want to see all blacks at his games (and "they’re scaring away whites"). He’s tired of seeing blacks on the kissing cam. Society have disguised racism so much that in order to be considered racism you have to say the N-Word… Or some other racial slur… (if not, then it’s justified) Just because it’s not as blatant as in the 1960’s doesn’t mean what he said didn’t have the same meaning. And the reason white people can’t see it is because of white privilege. You have the privilege to go to a majority white (insert activity here) everyday… You don’t even have to call it white because it’s THAT common. I can turn on my tv and LITERALLY watch countless shows back to back and only see white people. Do you realize how uncomfortable white people will be if Michael Jordan said that about whites? (and it still doesn’t have the same effect because MJ is a minority)… White people don’t have to conform to blacks, it’s the other way around… So, the fact that this guy is the owner of a business saying these things like the people on the kissing cam don’t matter (paying customers) all because they’re black is RACISM.
You can call for more diversity throughout your games, but you do that by trying to tap into those demographics with community outreach and make the games cheaper. You don’t do that by sending a racist email condemning black people for buying tickets and attending your games.
Furthermore, it’s even worse IF he did this just to sell the team. It shows black life continues to have no value in America, you can just say something racist towards blacks and make a profit. No one cares he said those things and he literally owned a team full of blacks and majority of his customers are black. They help pay for that arena and he continued to degrade them on his way out.. Sickening…
