high floorParticipantI’m not a Dallas native or a Maverick’s super-fan.. but I’ve always admired from afar the way your organization has operated the past 15 years (with the lone exception of breaking up your 2011 championship team).
I love the way you treat your franchise icon in Dirk, you have in my opinion a top-5 coach in Rick Carlisle that commands the respect of the front office and all of it’s players, and you have a front office who is always aggressive and willing to spend to help your team "win now". But, do you think the time has come for you to formally embrace the rebuild? Should you shop Wes Matthews & potentially "sell-high" if he starts off the season hot, but you’re losing games? I know you landed Harrison Barnes, who will likely excell with more usage, but I don’t think you reject undergoing a rebuild because you landed Harrison Barnes. He’s a nice player who could give you 17-19ppg next year.. but he strikes me as more of a 2nd, 3rd option type on Dallas if they are actually winning games at an above .500 clip.
Next year’s draft is a well regarded draft, and you don’t have any outgoing 1st round selections in the forseeable future (Two top 55 protected selections in 2018, 2019 per RealGM.com). You already have Carlisle locked in for 4 more years, so if you get him to buy into a rebuild vision you could get back on track quickly with some incoming high lottery selections. I would love to see what a hard-nosed coach like Carlisle could do with developing a player like Harry Giles.
What do you think? Would Dallas break logic & consider a rebuild immediately after handing out a huge 4yr, $95m deal to Barnes?

Jr. ROXASParticipantSo do the Mavs have a first round pick next year? Because I would love for them to get their future franchise player in next year’s draft like Fultz, Jackson or Dennis Smith. However, I think that as long as they have Carslile, it would be hard to rebuild because he’s just that good of a coach. The type who gets the most of an average team.
By adding Bogut alone, they’re gonna field a very competitive team next year. That guy impacts the game in so many levels especially when healthy, and is a dream center for Carlisle. (Tyson Chandler with passing anyone?) And then you have Barnes, who I’m still really high on as opposed to a lot of users in this forum. I’m a sucker for a picture-perfect pull-up jumper and post fadeaway, and Barnes’ is as beautiful as it gets. Lets hope he gets more consistent with it and I see a 20 ppg season. And obviously you still have Nowitzki, who will still be their number one option, and who is as efficient a scorer as you can get, even at this age.
To round it up, you have young guns who will absolutely kill coming off the bench. Dwight Powell and Justin Anderson are steals, and they bring incredible defense, shooting and energy every time they step in. I see them as potential successors of Dirk and Matthews respectively especially after being developed by Rick Carlisle. Seth Curry is a mini CJ McCollum and is cheap as dirt at 3M a year. The lineup I see will look like this:
PG: Deron, Felton, Barea
SG: Matthews, Curry, Harris
SF: Barnes, Anderson
PF: Dirk, Powell, Evans
C: Bogut, Meijri, Hammons
Pretty competitive team on paper. As much as I want a rebuild for this team, I honestly want to see what Carlisle does with this team. Remember, 2 years ago, the Mavs were right up there with the Spurs and Warriors at the top of the West until Rondo messed everything up. Carlisle was running a "historical" offense at that time with Jameer Nelson as the starting PG. And to be fair, their offense was an absolute beauty with Jameer especially, as he spaced the floor for Ellis, Parsons and Dirk. The Warriors and the Spurs obviously have the numbers 1 and 2 seeds locked up. Seeds 3-8 however will be up for grabs, and yes, they include the Clippers and the Thunder. I see the Mavs at the 4-6 range.

khaled_a_dParticipantIt is all about Dirk right now.
I mean you saw Kobe farewell season?Well Dirk want the opposite of it,he has given the Mavs ton of pay cuts while always playing his best. The Mavs wasted so many years chasing super start in FA after winning it all in 2011
The simple fact is that the Mavs owns Dirk his own farewell tour, but he doesn’t want it the Kobe way.he wants it to be competitive team.He made it clear several times that he wants to retire a Mavs but he also has zero interest in rebuilding project.
So Dirk will play next 2 years most probably and retire.get the 30k,equals Kobe number of seasons with one team and have the 20th season.during those 2 seasons there is very little chance we try to rebuild.
Most Mavs fans accept that.yes ideally we should have started rebuilding couple of years ago.But we respect Dirk wish. Now add few facts to that,we have a top 5 (at worst) coach who can get the best out of an average team,we have an owner who is obsessed with winning and cursing the draft and kept ignoring it for years.
The only chance we end up in the bottom is injuries,we have plenty of players with injury history and it could hurt us.
PS:The Mavs have been trying to improve their work on draft tbf,Finley addition to the front office was really solid and it seem he has sorted things in scouting prospects and having better big board as it seemed it was really messy.Justin Anderson draft in 2015 was really solid and this year we agot a solid 2nd round pick with Hammons and signed one of the best undrafted players in Dorian Finney-Smith while putting the best SL team we had in years.so it seem finally Cuban and the team starting to think seriously about the future and trying to find a steal or two that could be good assets when dirks retire.

BiggysmallsParticipantAs long as Carlisle is roaming the sidelines, Dallas will be a solid team.
Don’t see them winning in the playoffs where superstar talent just means a little too much but they’ll win 43-48 games and lock up a 6-8 seed.
They probably should’ve tried taking a year or two off and rebuilding the thing back up but that’s not Cuban’s way. He’ll continue to believe he can build through FA and while I think he’s a super entertaining owner and would be one I’d want to play for, I don’t think it’s the right way to do it anymore.
It worked when he had Dirk to build around. He’s not going to acquire to superstar to come and be the alpha of his team. They are going to have to bottom out for a year or two to get those high-enders again and if they do, I’d trust Cuban and Carlisle to put the pieces around them.
