ChriJollParticipantSo I’m relatively new to the in-depth draft following that happens on sites like these. (Relatively meaning a couple years as compared to posters on here)
I don’t quite understand why teams make promises to players?
Or why the players refuse to work out when they get one?

ChriJollParticipantSo why would the player refuse to work out anymore? (Ala Waiters, Jackson (2011))
In my line of thinking if I was a player I would think "Hell, if they’ll pick me here, all I have to do is show a little bit more and I can get up even higher?"0 - Posted on: Sat, 06/09/2012 - 10:24am #679085

NihochuParticipanti think its so they don’t improve their draft stock so then they can fall directly to their prediction of where they will be.

NihochuParticipanti agree but maybe the team that has promises a player something would suit him perfectly by situation or players or city whatever …. maybe also they dont want to lower their draft stock in case they play very badly

ChriJollParticipantMany players come across as to cocky to think they could lower their draft stock…
A bunch think they should be getting taken a lot higher than they are.0 - Posted on: Sat, 06/09/2012 - 12:57pm #679138

Zeke313ParticipantI just hope the Pistons don’t make a promise to Henson

phila9012ParticipantI dont get the point of player quiting work outs because he has a promise. To me I would want the guy who wants to compete and show everyone that he isnt hiding anything. Also If I am a player why give up if a team promises you, you could still go higher and with the confidence needed to be good in the NBA to me it is a red flag if a player stops working out.

ghettosermonParticipantI’d be careful with Waiters supposed "promise" by the Raptors, remember just last year apparently Colangelo had a promise for Brandon Knight at #5 but took Jonas there. Now maybe he made the promise assuming Jonas would go top 4 but still a promise is no more than a team’s mouth. The truth is teams are out to look for themselves. They make you a promise and have you shut down workouts because they want to guarantee you but there is nothing stopping them from drafting someone else if they drop. Where does that leave the prospect having shut down workouts, it leaves them drafted lower than they could have. If I were Reggie Jackson in my mind I would think if I were getting a promise at 24 that had to mean that I could probably move up even more. Unless I was a top 5 promise I wouldn’t shut down my workouts.
