A while back I posted an article about the future of the NBA

In summary the author said that you are only as good as your competiton and that PF was the most competitive position last decade.

My question is
1) is there any POTENTIAL future hall of famers that are capable of “redefining” these positions?
2) anybody you would take off?

the only people who are really unique on these lists are anthony randolph if he ends up playing small forward in the league. being 7 ft tall with his combination of skills would definitely be something the league has neer seen before. Kevin durant if his game full matures will have the most arsenal of moves in the league. He can get his shot off at anytime and will be scary when hes at his potential, lastly Lebron has already changed games and the league, someone whos 6.’8 and like 250 usually play undersized pf not super quick everything. I dont give him a position in the league because that would just be ignorant, we only give postions in the league so we can compare people and vote for all star teams, there isnt one thing basketball wise this man cant do. He can guard postions 1-4 with ease and even some centers if he wanted to. I dont think we will ever see some body with his size quickness skill set and body control in the next 20 years

I agree that the SF position is pretty much the most competitive position in the L right now

but Carmelo brings the shooting touch of an SG and sneaky athleticism
Durant brings height and pure shooting which isn’t new but his athleticism at 6’10 is very new and fresh
Granger is a pure shooter which is uncommon at 6’8 1/2

Thaddeus Young can be over reliant as a slasher but he has scary potential albeit limited to a secondary/tertiary option

who can give you thirty in a fast break offense like Philadelphia has (or used to have lol) 😛

i agree that the “SF” has the most talent moving forward but when u look at all the people on that list most of them cant pick a position or can play multiple positions and do so through out the game, Durant sg or small forward. Lebron does he really have a position, Beasley plays Pf and Sf. Randolph Sf or Pf? Josh SMith and Lewis both play Pf for their respective teams. Thadeus young has been used at the 3 and 4 spot as well.Carmelo can play both the 2-3. I think u could also add in igudola he plays the 2-3 The small forward positon is the most wide open position. None of them have a definite position and all of them would excel playing another postion of have already excelled

in order for rondolph to do that he would have to play the position and be great at it not just good. because if youre 7ft and play sf and youre jut good then that doesn’t really redefine it since there were better small forwards then you. its like if a 6’7 guy played pg and he was just good but not great. the only redefining player out there is lebron and maybe durant and dirk.

So many players who have played for no time are listed as potential hall of famers, but those who have played for a while aren’t as much. Not every good college, or in John Wall’s case high school player is actually the best ever.

being 7 ft like randolph can help change the perception of players being that tall from just becoming post players. If they see like someone like randolph at 7 ft doing a crossover theyll think he maybe i can do that. he can expand a 7footers role

He probably won’t play SF as long as Nelson coaches the Warriors. He also could be a better PF than SF if he puts on some weight. Well, in Golden State he is a better PF than SF right now.

Randolph can’t revolutionize the position any more than Garnett and Nowitzki did. I feel that the NBA’s positions can’t really be revolutionized any further. A power forward with ball handling usually plays sf.

However Chris Paul and Lebron James both have the potential to be the best at their respective positions. In my mind, they are the two best players under 30 in the NBA… He may be injured, but the completeness of Pauls game makes me like him a smidgen more than Wade.

And personally, if your 7′ and playing on the perimeter, your wasting your best asset as a player. Toughen up and get the easy baskets in the post.

You make a lot of very good points,
but the last one is not indicative of Garnett who can score inside outside,

most players coming up nowadays that are compared to Durant/Garnett

can only dribble/drive and can’t post up or shoot like Garnett,

I have taken Randolph off the list.

Randolph would have brought more athleticism to the sf position and less shooting than Detlef
